God is always no farther away than a breath, but it's a breath of total surrender. What we have or haven't done matters very little compared to that decision that we make every day... to live life our way, or to surrender our life to Him and ask Him to reveal His very self to us, knowing that as He does, He will lead us and we must follow! But the more He follow Him and know Him, the more we are changed, from one glorious revelation to another... into His likeness and the glorious version of ourselves that He has created us to be!
