I’m sure it’ll be tough to sell the 90, but at the rate you are growing your focus has to be on making your journey sustainable as a way of life. I’m sure you’ll lose some subscribers in this, but you’ll gain others who realise that you two and your ongoing travels have become the main characters in this rather than the trusty friend that was your 90. One more point;- safety. The defender is wonderful in many ways, not least capability and character, but if you crash in one or roll it over it just won’t do as well as more modern designs. Anyway, best of luck with the build, congratulations to both of you on your ever growing skill in bringing your videos to life along with the dreams and adventures they reflect. Happy trails👍
To me this is a sad day: No doubt that Toyotas are more reliable (allthough they do have their week points as well!) but to me (!) they just do not have "character" and "soul". Anyway I wish you the very best for your new project!!!
Variety, the spice of life. Being completely set on something in stone is the most limiting factor. Whether it be brand of vehicle, brand of tires or whatever trying something new. Isnt that one of the main reasons to travel.
Are you going to do a trip-prep video for the Dakar? I’m keen to know about whether you’re preparing fiches or a Carnet de Passage, or how you determine the route or which insurances you look for. A bit of a behind-the-scenes maybe :) I’m sure the Toyota is an upgrade in every sense, and probably grateful to have been able to experience the Defender in the way you have.
I'm more excited than you guys! :D Defender is for me the best overland car, but not for long term, specially if we talking about car parts. But when I see Hilux on the road, it's gorgeous! We're waiting! Btw, what will be the name of the channel from now on ? haha!
Your LR was a nice and quite unique setup for fulltime travel, but in the end car is only a tool to travel and experience, so keep up doing what you love and deliver us more content ! Hope you had a blast with genesis import and alu-cab, as we did outfiting our ranger with them ! Cheers from PL :)
Never seeing that splendid Defender again certainly hurts our hearts, but the fact remains that the real protagonists are you! so forward.....the journey continues!
really curious what it will look like your finished rig? I still like the look of the Defender better but the space issue is a real one in a 90 for sure, good luck and a happy new year from Zurich....stby for your finished car 🤔😉
Travelling for many years all over the world on different cars including Defenders (90, 110, 110 pickup, all with dif engines) i switched to Nissan Patrol and then to Toyota Hilux. Current hilux (same as yours) is my second hilux. Yes, Defender has charachter and its simply best for heavy off-roading but with hilux you get to the same places with much more comfort especially in cold environments (i drove Defender at -60 C degrees in Russia and it was epic disaster with frozen brakes, gearbox, unlockable doors and two frozen webasto heaters, while my collegue in Toyota Prado just drove listening jazz in his home slippers). After that i switched exclusively to japan cars for traveling. Good luck you and your beatuful dog!
We prefer the Defender more as its the coolest and capable 4x4, Hilux is a legend but nothing beats the true king which is Defender. I'm so glad you didn't buy a Grenadier. Enjoy your adventures and living your best life.
Looking forward to see how it turns out. I got my Hilux in 2019, same model, but the "Comfort“ Version, I use it as a daily driver and for overlanding. I admit that I smiled a bit, when I saw you with an oil bottle, or fixing stuff on your journey, course with a Hilux thats just not a thing, I got 150000km now, and not even a light bulp broke, it doesn‘t need extra oil, nothing, it just does whatever I want it to do. Good choice! Greetings from Germany.
We chose a Hilux 2.8 for our truck camper. The best, mostly because of Toyota reliability and support around the world, taking into account that Hilux is the preferred pickup in many many countries. 👍🏻
After 3 long expeditions to Tunisia,Algeria and Morocco desert and as a proud owner of a 110 Defender , with several other cars (Wranglers Toyota’s Gladiators etc) the Land Rover is the only one blending with the environment like it’s designed for this. The rest is like a foreign object to the environment. When my body will no more withstand the Defender “treatment” I will switch to a Toyota. Im 49 and I hope still have a couple of decades. You did it quite early. Enjoy your travels! Safe returns! Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷
The hilux is a great platform for what you guys want to do. Just be aware of the DPF and the 5th injector that clogs up easily. But it can be avoided :) good luck with the new rig, can't wait to see it finished :) cheers
Everyone who ever travel with old LandRover knows that it is not easy to use it with comfort... for a week or two its a pleasure but I would also chose TOYOTA pickup for a base to build overlanding RIG. After 8 month and 40kkm in LR 90 You deserve it. . . . But I will miss a lot Defender because it is one of the most beutiful old car.... right after JEEP CHEROKEE 90's 😀
I thought about the pick up truck and camper option but decided on a 2009 Troopy with the 1HZ. Hilux is a solid choice though. Looking forward to more videos.
So, in a few days the trip will start. Wonderful plan. I think your experience with LR pickup from your friends in Asia was important to buy a pick-up chassis. Toyota is a good car for travelling, everywhere are parts for the cars.
You guys just discovered how great a camper in a pickup is with Paul & Lydie!! I miss them in your vidéos!!! I'm sad you guys had to break appart... but you just don't give a sh*** about ppl stopping following you because you just change the brand of your car! The most important thing is... that you can and still enjoy traveling (espacially if it's with Paul...) ! And hate comment is still great for the algorithm!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Lot's of love from Vietnam!!
I love that you shared what you going to do and where you’re going, I’m so tired of Utubers treating us like children and making us wait until the next episode to find out something, as though we might not continue watching if we don’t like where they’re going…
I’m excited to see how you solve your problems with a bakkie (South African name for it). I would have thought a wagon was better for your needs, but I’m sure you’ll sort yourselves out with a hilux! Goodluck
Reliability and parts availability are unmatched. Love Rovers (I’ve had 2). Love Toyotas (on my 4th). Regrettably the Rovers always cost too much to maintain. The Hilux is a great vehicle or so I’ve heard since we’re stuck with Tacomas in the US.
shoould have got yourself a 110 or 130 if you wanted more spaces. The defender was really the think that got me into your channel. Sad to see it go. Good luck with the new build.
For overlanders its 50% the places and 50% the car. Toyota is boring as hell, people click whenever they see a Defender like that. Can't wait for Dakar adventure, you make real good videos! Geweldig project. Onverwoestbare pick-up. Eén vraag. Hoe komen jullie aan zoveel verlof? Ik moet krabbelen om op een heel jaar een paar weken vrij te zijn… wat doe ik verkeerd 😂
Definitely not as interesting as the defender. But a far better and more reliable vehicle (as a fellow Toyota truck owner) Look forward to the content with the hilux!!!
Oh no, lewie and the hilux will be the new name ....😢 Jammer om de defender te zien verdwijnen, maar hou van je stortytelling. De defender bracht toch wel een bepaalde vibe ...
Very smart move. You can get parts for Toyota everywhere around the world nad the way you travel is something that should be on top of your list. Good luck!
@@lewieandtherover What makes you think that? I wasn’t joking. Joining the Toyota sheep might attract you a bigger, yet characterless audience. ...I’ve unsubscribed.
From USA here...can someone tell me why Europeans call "trucks" ..."cars"? We obviously distinguish a vehicle with a "truck" bed from a car, but almost all europeans say "car." To me it's like calling Lewie a cat..but he's not a cat, just like a truck is definitely not a car.

Congrats guys! You didn’t fancy joining us with a Grenadier? 😎 The Toyota is a great choice. They’re solid. 💪
Haha we love the grenadier but we just fell in love with the Toyota network around the world and how easy it is

Okey, now you get me really curious about our new build wit this HiLux. 😀
