  • The Tren Maya is operating now! So, what is this train like? This 3-billion-dollar project is changing the face of tourism for México and the southeast of the country. The Tren Maya is a tourist train that will encompass 5 states in the southeast of Mexico. Currently the first two segments are open. The entire Tren Maya route is scheduled to be open by the end of February 2024. We took the train to show you what it is like and also give our opinion. We are not just travel writers, but also live here and have seen this project being built, even having friends work on this project. So, we give a more complete review of how the Tren Maya will work for our area. We have a lot more information in our article here: everythingplayadelcarmen.com/...

You forgot to speak about the Tren Interoceánico that will connect to the tren maya in Palenque to Coatzacoalcos and from there to the Pacific Ocean port of Salina Cruz. There will will be industrial parks for companies that want to invest in the area and this project plans to complement the Panama Canal.

We alluded to it but that is another big piece of the puzzle in Mexico that is adding to the infrastructure. It is an exciting and interesting time in Mexico to see so many things happening. We might have to do another video just about the Interoceanico Tren.

there are multiple reasons for the stationts not to be so close to the center of the cities... 1.- its accounting for the growth of the cities in the next 30 years and 2.- the underground could have cuased damage to the cenotes so they changed the rout many times to mitigate the ecological problems.
i also want to add that right now there are working at 120km but will work at 160 later. and also want to point out that the tulum airport is far from the city center for growth and tulum will have two train maya stations... one at the airport and one close to the city center.
and i believe as of right now you can buy at the station, 'station to station' tickets like cancun to teya-merida, you no longer need to buy the whole way like before.

See, the Train Maya will have centres of information for tourists as well as ecological hotels in stations and stops where there are ruins as well as there will be ecological tours to the ruins not just the stations and if you want to go to any downtown well you can go there too but it’s not the sole intention to replace a bus or a car. There will be 3 different trains , the one that’s actually running which was a priority for our president so Mayan people and locals so they could move in a cheap way . Workers of the unfinished project alike. There will be also a restaurant train and a rooms train for long distances with beds and shower . So maybe there will be people that take that train and rest although it could be faster driving or by bus . If you want to see the whole project as it will be with images and all stops and stations I just found it in one TH-cam channel named Pacheco Tv but it’s only in Spanish . Thanks for the vid

It is good there will be more aspects of the project, but there are places like Playa Del Camren that have no ruins and are a place to get on the train. It was originally going to be built along the 307 Highway and in the center of Playa. Now it is on the western edge of town. So, the efficiency of using it for the airport and even adding time to overall journeys is more. This is one example of how it could have been more efficient.

You can leave direct from the Cancun Airport to Merida. We would not risk booking this trip yet since not all the trains are running, and the trains do not run exactly on time now. Also currently you can only buy that ticket in the station, so it will be better when the Tren Maya has an official website to book all the tickets. Currently there are several trains a day but this will become more frequent.

Canadian here who lives in Southern Mexico part time. The Tren Maya began operating earlier than it should have started up. The reason for the early start was entirely political. The president wanted to earn some brownie points in the media to promote candidates for the upcoming elections at the end of the year. The first train, on which he road, was delayed for hours because the system wasn't ready. Overall, the train system is probably safe, but not ready for daily use. Expect unannounced delays and cancellations. This is what happens when political imperatives win over operational imperatives.

Chichen Itza has storage. Once you pay your tickets it is to the right. If you take the train, you still need to get to the ruins. It is about a 8 minute drive. We don't know what transportation might be available. A taxi might charge 100 pesos to the ruins or more. There are busses that actually stop there and you can get a connecting bus.

Great information!! Tren Maya needs to hire you as their English Spokesman. I plan to fly into Cancun next week and take the train to Palenque with a couple stops in between. Due to its limited daily run of one way once a day, I am going to mix the transportation with ADO buses.
I noticed on the ticket portal of the Tren Maya website, it seems they use a rolling 7-day window in which one can purchase their tickets. When I tried to purchase tickets online two weeks out, the date wasn't available. Do you know if in fact they have a limited time window in which to purchase tickets? Also, is it possible for seats to sell out while there is limited train service (i.e., One train going each way once a day)?

The Tren Maya is having a limited window of ticket sales now. The platform for buying has already changed once and have had other issues with the tickets. We have never seen a train sell out except the first inaugural ones. What might happen is the non ability to buy same day tickets.

One of the reasons of why Tren Maya is far from downtown in every mayor city is because it would almost replace buses, which are still the dominant transportation and tons of drivers would lose their jobs and there would be more interest to sabotage the project. Thus if the train is far from downtown buses and taxis can still have some market. That was a well planned strategy. The government wants to boost the railroad system but slowly enough to not create panic in other guilds of transportation (which are known to be confrontational at times).

In terms of the train stations not being closed to the center of cities you will soon see people start setting up their little shops and services closer to the stations. Then there are highways, airports and industrial zones next to stations that do not make it conducive to make a new city center.

We remember in Ecuador taking the train and there were very different prices for tourist and locals. It seemed very fair and really said anything. The pricing here is similar to the bus for locals, unfortunately, not for local trips or daily trips, because it is not efficient in time and costs more. It costs more because you need to pay to get to and from the train stations. So, most of the Mexicans that take the train are middle class from other parts of México that want to take it once to try it.

There will be ecological hotels and centres for ecological tours to the ruins and the jaguar sanctuary at major stations or ruins, cenotes that were discovered with technology prior to the railroads reinstallation , they’re unveiled already and their discovery even caused detours from the original routes . The whole project is still under construction , 24/7, but the rush of opening this train is for workers in this project as well as for the mayas to connect already . Of course people have travelled to show president our support since he was attacked with fakes regarding ecology and destruction by developers and animal traffickers and the train system is new for the millenials who weren’t born by the time there were trains in Mexico sold by a former corrupt president . There are new parts that were cut through the forest, like any road or new highway, things are cut. The highway from Merida to Cancun was moved mostly to one side and the other side converted into tracks. This still cut trees but the amount cut will pretty much grow back. Most of that growth was not old forest. We are much more concerned about people draining oil on the ground and other household chemicals, pig farming and other things that damage our ecosystem. There is much more pollution from humans living than the train will pollute. Any big project will negatively impact the environment, we would rather have a train than more shopping malls and ranches where they clearcut forest. There is give and take to everything, but from everything we have seen, there are positives that balance out more the project than other construction.
