    The look surgeons and physicians have when the anaesthetists arrive at the scene is enough testament to how critical our role is. Like angels hovering over unseen, unheard, not acknowledged often but always there when it matters the most. Love being an anaesthetist.

    In my internship, I've called for help from the internists in the infectious disease ward for a COVID patient who was deteriorating. There I witnessed three internists (an attending, a fellow and a resident) just screaming and jumping around the patient, exclaiming the patient needed to be intubated and none of the three doctors dared to perform the intubation, even though all three had reportedly experience in medical intensive care. They ultimately called for an anesthesiologist who calmly entered the scene, examined the patient carefully, and transported him awake and breathing spontaneously to the anesthesiological ICU to intubate and prone him there all in due calmness. That was the day I realized I wanted to become such a deliberate, thoughtful and skilled physician too and started my residency in anesthesiology after my internship was over.

      I’m a final year Anaesthesiology resident in India. My inspiration for anaesthesia was similar to that of yours. I used to see the code blue team working in the emergency as an intern. I noticed that it’s always the anaesthesia resident leading the resuscitation whereas the internal medicine resident used to stand with his arms folded in the background. That was the time I realised what I want to do in life.

      Yeah. Anaesthesiologist intubates… that’s it ^^ the internist is taking care of everything else in the ICU. ATM I do my internship in anaesthesiology and one of the most experienced anaesthesiologist said before my first intubation… don’t worry everyone can learn this easily… a haircutter as well as a student. I am 10 days into my internship and are able to intubate, cannulate and calculate narcotics. Obviously there is more to this speciality but in the operating room, where most anaesthesiologist work, it is super boring 99% of time.

  • @iPizzaHead
    @iPizzaHead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Almost the same story as mine. As an intern, I wanted so bad to be an Internist, but it shocked me when my attendings, being so brilliant in many aspects of Medicine, didn't know how to act in moments of sheer panic and took forever to do something. Then I fiddled around EM, but something wasn't quite right. Then, during my clinical rotation in ObGyn, and, after a few difficult patients and seeing Anesthesia in action, I went and talked to them so i could learn more. The rest, is history. One of the best decisions of my life!

    Thanks for sharing your story Dr Hadzic! I decided to become an anesthesiologist during my anesthesia rotation as a medical student , I saw how they save many lives securing the airway during codes and also placing impossible IV access that no-one else could've done. I also realized that not many people even in the medical field understood our role , but it didn't bother me even now. I don't care if they don't know my name or they don't recognize me , for me the satisfaction of saving a life or helping another human being during surgery is enough .

    These situations are routine for anesthesiologists - resuscitating in the operating room during a trauma case, or helping the floor team with a patient in distress, and we do these things particularly well. The reason for that is training from day 1 of residency. The only reason we don't enter the spotlight is because we don't particularly care for it. We love what we do and will offer help whenever we have a chance.

    First of all, an excellent video, which showed the essence of what it means to be an anesthesiologist. In addition to manual skills, anesthesiologists possess extensive medical knowledge. During my training in anesthesia, I realized that anesthesia is more than a profession, it is simply a passion. As my mentor said, the anesthesiologist does not have a workplace, his workplace is the entire clinic or hospital. It's a wonderful occupation that offers a lot, not only in business but also in life.

    You almost made me cry... A very similar story here... I was an undergraduate when I witnessed a similar situation, but the Anesthesiologist was wearing a really long robe, and came in running to take the AW... I swear it looked like a cape... And as a superhero (that later I understood we are...) Saved the day!! Well after a couple of years working as a general practitioner I said to myself, who is the best prepared MD to lead an emergency... In the ER, OR or an Ambulance... And here I am... Think I just couldn't do anything else... I luv this game!!! Love to read all the comments

    Anesthesiology was my first and ONLY choice. Love at first sight, man. As soon as I passed the residency exam, I started revision all over again in case I fail to get. Told myself: I'll take this exam three, four, five times if needed if this is what it takes to nail my anesthesiology spot. Got it on the second try. Never seen myself belonging elsewhere than anesthesiology.

    You are thrilled only because you can work in the right place. Try to be an anesthesiologist in Italy or in the worst case in Sicily and let's see if you stick with the same idea

    Every italian anesthesiology i know, regrets to be one. In my opinion is a wonderful job if you don't need gratitude and recognition from outside. Otherwise it becomes a very frustrating job, considering that he earns the same 3000€/month as every other chillaxed phisician in the hospital. The science behind anesthesiology and the immediate impact of what you decide to do doesn't have any equals in medical field.

    In India anesthesiologists are considered burden by healthcare planners. Low income and no recognition.

    Honestly physicians should get critical care skills .... It's embarrassing when all you have is mostly academic knowledge and little critical care skills , come on...
