Petroleum Engineering was made similar to Chemical, Petrochemical, or Refinery in this video. Petroleum Engineering is far different from all these fields. Also if you have any thought of picking any other branches like CS, Civil, Mech. etc., you cannot make a comparison (besides pay packages). Petroleum Engineering is a different flavor altogether. Pick a branch, you think you are interested in, and don't just think about the pay package. Four years in a branch which you don't like will be pretty boring and of no use. Search in google about branches, what are you going to study and all. And, if you opt for a good college, the branch doesn't matter. You will have good options by the time you graduate from any good college. 3. Petroleum Engineering is different from all other branches. Opportunities are huge but so is the competition. Avoid joining any colleges which have been recently opened. Choose government colleges and private colleges which are very old (10-15 years). 4. Getting an on-campus job is great, but off-campus opportunities are limited. You cannot appear for some government-reputed exams like IES. Of course MBA, M. Tech Ph.D. these options are available. Jobs in this industry are market-dependent. When things are tough you have to fight it out, even in good colleges. A core job in Petroleum Engineering will require higher efforts compared to a core job in any other engineering branch. But the job profile is much more lucrative and will provide an experience like no other. 5. Your soft skill will also matter much more in placement compared to other branches. 6. There is always scope for coding in any engineering branch if you want to add additional skills to your resume. Coding is not only limited to the CS branch. In fact, every engineering branch has design courses, which often require you to code.
