This song is so emotionally provocative that it is somewhat difficult to describe. From beginning to end I felt completely sucked in like a black hole craving energy. Truthfully, if you close your eyes and think about things in your life and really listen to the words your mind will actually form its own music video.
As far as a lack of a big solo is concerned the song really didn't need it. As a musician myself, I tend to listen to the layers and try to isolate them. There is a lot of guitar work going on here between Mark and miles and all of it is very layered structurally. Thus, the layered guitar work combined with the moderate drum tempo of Scott Phillips and the driving baseline of Brian Marshall is really well orchestrated. Personally, I think if they were going to try to insert a really energetic solo it would have completely undermined the whole structure. Simply put, this song is all about the collective of the instruments and not any single instrument.

Doooood.... so eloquently put. It has an epicness of some Tool songs. But Myles vocals sets AB apart from that. Reminds me a little of The Uninvited from Fortress. Which was widely compared to Tool's Schism.
Also where do you live because I want to be friends :-)

@@Bradbssargdons hello, thank you for the kind words. In fact, fortress is my favorite album from alter bridge. Frankly, I feel as if it was there magnum opus. Although, the Blackbird album is a very close second. I really have high hopes after listening to some of the new releases for the new album that they are going to find their way back to where they were when they released fortress. While I liked every song on their last album walk the sky, I really feel a little disappointed by it. I felt there were way too many of the same kinds of songs on that album and it really came off in my opinion more like an alternative album rather than what a serious hard Rock or metal band would produce. Certainly, it wasn't a bad album but, I feel they should have taken some of the songs from it and save them to distribute into future albums rather than just compile them the way they were.
I actually live in northern Los Angeles county in california. Although, I am planning on moving to Florida in the next couple of years. California has really gone downhill and is becoming very hard to tolerate. It just costs way too much to live here and it has become so run down. In fact, because of all the filth and homeless problems that we are having here we are actually having outbreaks of bubonic plague. I am a tenured professor of exercise physiology and biomechanics at a major university here in southern california. Fortunately, I really do not have trouble finding teaching positions so, I think a move to Florida would be beneficial for me. Thank you for the response I can tell you are passionate about music in the same way that I am. I find it interesting that you brought up tool because, that is a band that I have always felt had a similar course. Not to be misunderstood, alter bridge and tool have very different identities but, I have always identified alter bridge as a very theatrical and somewhat progressive band. Better said, a lot of their songs tend to be very episodic.

I think the guitar work in the outro was just what it needed, no solo

AlterBridge always changes things up with each successive album. …and usually succeed in their objective in keeping things fresh, while maintaining their core sound. Great band! Sounds like its going to be a kick ass album coming this fall!💪

Thanks for the reaction. Agree with everything you said. This song is such a moody track...they could've gone to the generic chorus but they didn't. The many parts of this album appear to be combining for greatness 🤘🏻🤘🏻 can't wait to hear the rest.

What do you think this verse means? “As you adorn your crown of thorns
    And play the pure messiah
Your flock will come to know the beast you are”
