In 1990, we, metal heads, used to correspond by letter and exchange demo tapes. Once, I arranged a meeting with a guitarist to form a metal band. We talked and before we had our rehearsal, he asked me if I knew Candlemass. I said I had never heard of them, and then he smiled and said, "Are you ready to listen to the best album in the world?" and then he put Nightfall on the record player. We listened to the whole album. When we finished, I said, "I want to make that kind of music!"
This one will always be my favorite. Bought it right when it came out - without knowing anything about them beyond the hype sticker designating their sound as a wall of DOOM ha - and then had to find Epicus Doomicus at a different record shop!
Samarithan: One day I saw a man Dressed in rags, with a staff in his hand Begging for a penny to survive How poor a man can be I gave him hospitality A room, a bed and lots of food to eat, oh-oh Still I hear his last few words "I can never return what you've done But Heaven will remember and repay" 50 years had gone since I saw him I was dying and I'd soon be dead Three angels stood in front of my bed, oh-oh The first one she said to me, "Don't be afraid I'll give you immortality, and grace for your soul" The second had eyes of gold, she gave me my wings The third gave all wisdom, and angel could give to me One day I saw a man Dressed in rags, with a staff in his hand Begging for a penny to survive How poor a man can be I gave him hospitality A room, a bed and lots of food to eat, oh I joined with my destiny, eternally I knew I was born again, an angel to be A vision beyond my dreams, called me by name So in devotion, I spread my wings, to Heaven I'd came to stay, oh
who is composer of the intro melody and the same melody that goes as background for solo in the first song the well of souls? its the same melody satyricon later used in mother north?
Man, such a great album. I always find myself playing air guitar to this album. I love how even the faster parts of songs feel like doom. "Dark are the Veils of Death" is one of my favorites I always think of, but this is an album you've got to rock out to all the way through.
33 years of this masterpiece doom metal icon!
very well said

Messiah's voice and lyrics hit deep, like you're being initiated into the occult and the music is the soundtrack. Fucking brilliant.

One day I saw a man
Dressed in rags, with a staff in his hand
Begging for a penny to survive
How poor a man can be

Still I hear his last few words
"I can never return what you've done
But Heaven will remember and repay"
50 years had gone since I saw him
I was dying and I'd soon be dead
Three angels stood in front of my bed, oh-oh
The first one she said to me, "Don't be afraid
I'll give you immortality, and grace for your soul"
The second had eyes of gold, she gave me my wings
The third gave all wisdom, and angel could give to me
One day I saw a man
Dressed in rags, with a staff in his hand
Begging for a penny to survive
How poor a man can be
I gave him hospitality
A room, a bed and lots of food to eat, oh
I joined with my destiny, eternally
I knew I was born again, an angel to be
A vision beyond my dreams, called me by name
So in devotion, I spread my wings, to Heaven I'd came to stay, oh

was genius back then....

A little bit similar, but definitely not the same. Greetings from Chile, home of Epic Doom Metal
No, it's the same melody Nile used in Unas slayer of the Gods.
Anyway the original is this and is composed by the bassist Leif Edling.
