This video examines Honoré Daumier’s watercolor drawing, The Incriminating Evidence. This work is one of many depictions of courtrooms by Daumier. Throughout his career, he depicted judges and lawyers as participants in a corrupted judicial system. In this work, Daumier provides the elements of a narrative (the courtroom, the judges, the evidence) but the viewer’s imagination constructs the crime and arrives at a verdict.
