    "BBC staff will leave en masse", hmm, I wonder if they would, because if they did, they would have to have somewhere to go. But who would employ a dyed in the wool BBC employee? I'm not sure they would survive in the real world of work, poor things. No, I think they will think of their mortgages, stay and moan and groan about it, (cue Kevin the teenager's voice) "it's SO unfair!" Yes BBC employee, life is unfair. Tough.

    Regarding Sam's nonsensical and entirely wrong point, Fox wasn't ignorant about WW1, he didnt say absolutely no Sikhs fought on the front, he said that it was a bit off to find just one in a truck full of Geordies, and it blatantly was, rank tokenism and everybody knows it.

    the notion that wokeness is about something as gentle as 'curiosity' is absurd. there is not an ounce of curiosity in it. Wokeness HAS the answer and we need to get in LINE.

    I watched 1917 and did agree with Lawrence Fox that the Sikh soldier depicted was a bit of tokenism. What he said, which I agree with, was that they should depicted a whole platoon or company of Sikhs, as they would fought as a regiment and one Sikh would not have been embedded into a British platoon.

      That's because identity politics, and critical race theory are not exactly either. Coleman Hughes recently interviewed James Lindsey, and Peter Beghossian (excuse the bad spelling of these names, but I'm not sure how they are spelt), two experts on this topic (what we refer to as 'woke'). It's worth checking this out, as the inconsistency is dealt with in that discussion.

      My thoughts exactly. To suggest opponents of critical social justice are tilting at strawmen is ill advised enough, given Leith's own apparently floppy grip on the subject, but to do that on a podcast where he must have known Murray - who has in many ways a better understanding of the ideology than the woke themselves - was a likely contributor just made him sound like an absolute fool.

    The second author says we should know about what we are criticising before we criticise, then says post modernism and Marxism are incompatible, without realising that the reason why people equate the two, is because critical theory (the academic backbone of wokeness) is crawling with self confessed Marxists who have taken the post modern tool of deconstruction to use against “structures” of power.
    So only someone who doesn’t know about critical theory could say it’s contradictory to say it’s a form of post modernism and Marxism.
    Research before you type.

    • @kafka6451
      @kafka6451 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Honest John. Exactly! Even the experts, Lindsay, and Boghossian refer to this ideology as 'Wokeness', so he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. The term 'woke' is just a less longwinded term, than identity politics, and critical race theory, and is something we can all use, without having to be too intellectual about an ideology we don't agree with.

    • @hayleylongster4698

    • @honestjohn6418
      @honestjohn6418 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kafka 64
      Lindsay, Boghossian and Pluckrose refer to it in a few more technical ways.
      Applied postmodernism = the original post modernism deconstructed everything, including the Marxist meta narrative and minority identity. Critical theorists have “applied” post modernism selectively, they deconstruct only that which they want to deconstruct to gain power. So “whiteness”, capitalism, the Western Cannon & biology are deconstructed, blackness, minority cultures, trans identity and the Marxist substructure of, oppressed v oppressor, are held up as sacred truths that only racists, sexists, fascists and Nazis would fail to bow down to or question. EG: applied post modernism!
      The other is...
      Post Marxist = a form of evolved Marxism which takes the Marxist meta narrative about oppressed people, structures of power and an oppressive group which requires the toppling of civilizational structures to achieve equality and justice. It takes that away from the economic system and the proletariate v bourgeoisie and reapplies it to race. So not exactly Marxism but a bunch of Marxists reapplying the Marxist lens. EG: post Marxism.
      Most academics who developed, teach or are post modernist and critical theory activists will have been avowed Marxists at some point and many many still are.
      The founder of BLM referred to it’s leaders as “trained Marxists”, Antifa’s flag features the black of anarchy and the red for Marxism and sometimes sports the Communist insignia of three arrows. There are so many sound, informed reasons why Marxism and post modernism are used in the same breath.
      The contradiction isn’t ours, it’s the post modern critical theorists who’ve applied social constructionism to biology but sacred essentialism to trans identity. Deconstructed “whiteness” but lionised, capitalised & made sacred, black identity.
      Those of us who oppose the woke aren’t in error when we say post modernism and Marxism in quick succession, the error is on the part of normies like this author who doesn’t know that the woke movement embrace the contradiction and use it as a shield against critics.

      @@honestjohn6418 I listened to Lindsay, and Boghossian's Trojan Horse series, where it became very apparent that it is practically impossible to criticise this ideology. That series was one of the most frightening things I'd ever listened to. You sound far more versed in this than I am, but I find it extremely concerning that this ideology has managed to infiltrate our institutions to the extent that it has. I did not assume you were in error, and am very aware that the founder of BLM had stated that they are trained Marxists.

  • @handydrangon
    @handydrangon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yes, being woke is like the fish in water recognising it’s in water. The criticism of people claiming to be woke is that it is a very low resolution “understanding” of society. The fish cannot recognising the complexities of themselves, the water, and location which have allowed it to inhabit that space.
    Just to add balance, I agree that injustice exists and requires attention, I just believe that ordinary people on both sides of the political aisle have been weaponised to see each other as an unsalvageable vestige of the other side, by a political class consumed by its own self interest.
    Eric and Bret Weinstein both have very interesting points of view, I would recommend them both to broaden your thinking on many topics.

    An admirable effort by Sam Leith, in defence of 'wokeness,' pity he had such a poor topic to defend. Whatever the original meaning of 'woke' was - being 'awake' according to Sam. It is somewhat ironic then, that the most common criticism of 'wokeness' is that its practitioners have an almost tone-deaf sense of their own lack of self-awareness. As for the definitions of 'post-modernism' and 'Marxism' - for the left, they are entirely fluid definitions and at times, flatly denied that they even exist. So, forgive any confusion we on the right may have about them.

    In response to Sam Leith, taking note that you are occasionally a satirist so might have taken points in the wrong light. On the note of Dunkirk, saying that Indian's took part in the war and using that as a reason for why it's perfectly normal to see them in the Dunkirk movie, presupposes you know of an Indian regiment present during said engagement? No? didn't think so, that's because the western front was almost exclusively westeners, the rest of the British empire's forces were positioned in other theatres...If there's a WW2 movie set in those regions have at it...
    On the note of your grandfather, it seems to me you're saying "my grandfather is South African, South African's are racist right? well, even he has seen the light, why haven't you?" ... Now considering your education I would seriously doubt your families exposure to an english commoner let alone a black one, your rhetoric seems exactly like the one where all the westeners have done is treading on those poor majorities.

      True, colonial troops were fighting in theatres near their own lands. DOUGLAS MURRAY is making the first huge error in his recent analysis of Conservative Britain: he still assumes that DORIS JOHNSON and his 'cabal' are good actors in what is going on. Think they are determined to destroy the United Kingdom. I would love to know how Johnson, Hancock, Patel, Whitty, Vallance, and Ferguson voted in the 2016 Referendum: because I'd be willing to bet that they were all REMOANERS. The last great act that they can carry out for their Brussels Masters is to destroy the UK. ONLY this explanation accounts for the current ridiculous policies.

The fish and water metaphor is like saying humans don't know what air is, office temperatures are set according to the majority preference, so is different in offices when the majority are female, some cars are designed for women including seat belt positioning and LF said he thought there should have been more Sikhs in 1917 as opposed to just 1. This is the point of wokeness, it starts with a false premise, then demands doublethink.

    Mr Leith, to attest that 'There is nuance' is to spout the same 'The sky is blue' (or water is water)argument that you accuse your peers of. The silent majority know this, that is the issue. We KNOW the world is still not fair, but we're doing better than we ever have been, and burning everything down wont fix it. Fighting 'wokeness' is fighting the *exaggeration* of the issue, not the underlining notions. The vast majority of people on the right take for granted that races, sexes etc. should be treated equally, or that the environment should be protected, its just so obvious we don't make a whole song and dance about it. What were fighting now is an insincere exaggeration of the blatantly obvious to gain power, either socially (virtue signalling) or politically (pandering).
