A "cinematic" look is far more than just complimentary colors; moreover, teal and orange has become rather passe. Many film makers use halation effects, super soft lighting, tight depth of field... just to name a few. My grading philosophy is to grade an image so that it does not have what is known as the, "soap opera effect." I don't, or rarely, use use the examples I mentioned above. I crush the black, shoot into the shadow then export from Blackmagic raw down to 1080P... just to name a few. I must confess however, I use the entire BMD ecosystem. From Pocket 6Ks, Blackmagic raw and Resolve. This allows me to use BMD (non auto) color management and the Da Vinci wide gamut. Those two presets also help with that... "cinematic look!!" Also, one last thing, there's a plethora of way to grade using Resolve to achieve the same effect!!! You have the eye!!! Cheers
What's the workflow when you have a lot of clips to grade ? What is your process when grading a whole video for example ? Do you use groups, adjustment layers etc ? Do you sometimes copy the exact color grading from one clip to another if you want the same look for both?
Yeah, I basically find a clip that represents a scene, grade, that, then copy and paste it on the other clips in that scene. I will then go and adjust each clip individually. And no, I don’t use adjustment clips for color grading.
