The Highborne's excessive use of magic caused ripples of energy to spread from the Well of Eternity into the Great Dark Beyond, which attracted the attention of Sargeras, the Great Enemy. Sensing the limitless energies of the Well, Sargeras became consumed with hunger and invaded Azeroth with his Burning Legion. The Highborne aided Queen Azshara in opening a portal within the Well, allowing the Legion to enter. The night elves' allies, including Cenarius and the dragons, fought back, but Neltharion, the Dragon Aspect of Earth, went mad and turned on his brethren. Malfurion insisted on destroying the Well to prevent the Legion from using it as a link to the physical world, but Illidan betrayed him and warned Azshara. During the final dark incantation, Malfurion and his companions stormed Azshara's temple, but she was prepared with Highborne guardsmen. Tyrande was injured, and Malfurion went into a rage to end Azshara's life. Illidan appeared and stole sacred waters from the Well to keep its energies for himself. The unstable vortex within the Well exploded, causing a catastrophic chain reaction that shattered Kalimdor's landmass and created the Maelstrom at the center of the new sea. Queen Azshara and her Highborne elite survived but became twisted naga cursed by their powers. They built a new city, Nazjatar, at the bottom of the Maelstrom and remained hidden for over ten thousand years before revealing their existence to the surface world.
