21+1 NEW SHOWS OF FALL TV 1978

  • Actually, 21 new shows. The 22nd was Centennial, a 26-hour maxi-series that usually aired as two-hour episodes, if not three hours, and was randomly scheduled on Sunday nights some weeks and Saturdays other weeks between October 1978 and February 1979. It wasn't exactly a regular weekly series but still lengthy enough to be regarded as a new series, nevertheless.

      If I recall correctly, the Taxi theme was just a piece of stock music they pulled out of the library. Somehow it was perfect.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ...and I misremembered: it was specially composed for the show, but not as the main theme tune--it was the theme for a guest character in the third episode, and replaced the more upbeat original theme.

      @MattMcIrvin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's interesting that the WKRP song is a love-lost ballad addressed to, I always imagined, an ex-girlfriend of Andy Travis who never appears in the show (though I guess one did show up in an episode). It's this odd side note.

    I remember looking at Conrad Janis in "Mork and Mindy" and thinking that he was an old man. He was younger then than I am now. I also did not find out until later that he was a famous bandleader previously and so it made sense for him to run a music shop in the TV show. Also, he is still alive at 93 years old.

    Thank you for sharing, RwDt09! I was born in 1978, so this montage really resonated with me! For every successful program like "Mork & Mindy," "Taxi," "Vega$," or "WKRP In Cincinnati," there were quite a few stinkbombs this season like "Flying High," "Grandpa Goes To Washington," "In The Beginning," "W.E.B.," "The American Girls," and "The Waverly Wonders."
    An interesting bit of trivia is that "The White Shadow" and "Diff'rent Strokes" would both premiere in November, long after the fall season was off and running. "Strokes" replaced the short-lived "Kotter"-esque sitcom "The Waverly Wonders," starring former NFL quarterback Joe "Broadway Joe" Namath. Speaking of "The Waverly Wonders," Larry Hagman was offered the leading role before going with his second choice--the amoral Texas oil baron J.R. Ewing on the long-running CBS nighttime soap "Dallas."
    But there were some intriguing nuggets amid most of the fool's gold that season--"Battlestar Galactica," "Kaz," "Lifeline," "Sword Of Justice," "The Eddie Capra Mysteries," "The Paper Chase," and the miniseries "Centennial" come to mind.
    The less said about both "Who's Watching The Kids?" and "People" (what incompetent network bigwig thought a weekly newsmagazine based on a magazine would be successful?), the better.
    Thanks for uploading, RwDt09!

I had set my schedule for that day by Galactica's premier and had to report for work at 11 PM for the overnight shift. No (widespread use of) VCRs in those days. Going forward, every Sunday night for months was defined by watching Battlestar Galactica before i had to head-in to work. If early starts were scheduled then I missed that week's episode 😥 . I haven't watched much of Battlestar Galactica over the past several decades but I still have a high opinion of it out of a sense of nostalgia.

    Today’s modern tv shows just have garbage cold openings with no personality or titles. You won’t be able to do a video like this in 30 yrs today’s crop of tv shows. Not saying anything about the overall quality just the lack of distinctive opening credits.

      Blame it on commercials. Depending on the show, the opening credits were between 1-1.5 minutes and the episodes were longer than they are now. They needed to do away with the opening credits in order to take advantage of every minute not spent on commercials. Personally, I prefer they just get to the show and play the credits over the opening sequence.
