I had this game as a kid in the early 80’s… It was one of my favorite games! We never actually followed the rules though - we just tried to build strong fortresses, and take down the other ones.

We placed the king on the treasure space and if he got knocked out you won. We had the castle outpost expansion and those things LAUNCHED the pucks.

Exactly the same for me. the rules were too boring. we just tried to kill all the soldiers.

I remember the day sitting in the back seat of my parents car on the way back from the mall holding the box. I had this Vikings and Barbarians edition.

This is so great! Such a blast from the past. I begged my parents for this game back in 1983 and they got it for me for Christmas that year. It had a number of add on components released later. Like you, I lost most of my pieces or my mom threw them away. But I did pick up the re-issue in the 1990s.

So many memories playing on the hallway floor. Got it for Christmas in the early eighties. Dream of owning the original. Daydream about it often.

This was perhaps my favorite game as a child; I kept my set (missing a few flags and one carom), and today my young boys are playing with it now.

So many great memories, thanks for opening up my childhood again. I bought 3 of these so I could made mega huge castles with a crazy amount of walls, it really increased the replay value having more components, specially to make walls more hard to get through. I tightened the rubber bands to the point where I even broke some of the catapults because I wanted to cause more damage!

I had this along with Dark Tower. Of course my mom got rid of them when I went away to school and the excuse was, I didn't know you still wanted them.

It was a Boomer thing. You discard the kids toys when they reach adolessnce because they are supposed to grow up and not like toys after that.

    4:36 what a shot!
The expansions sound really cool, especially if you liked to just collect monster figures. Would the dragons and minatours work like the seige weapons or have their own special rules?

Loved Crossbows & Catapults, and I still have most of the pieces from my original set. I also had the expansion with the spring-loaded battering ram (I had seen bits of the Masada mini-series and was obsessed with battering rams).

Excellent review, but just one thing. I have the instruction booklet and the Vikings are the brown figures and they play with the tan castle. The Barbarians are the beige figures and they play with the grey castle. Greetings, nice review.

Growing up I never knew the rules. And I don't remember brothers playing with me. I would just build castles out of the wall pieces from both sides and see how long it took to knock it down.

I had this game when I was 8 (1993-94), but I didn't realize there were all these rules available to play a full-blown game! My dad and I basically played this like Lego you can shoot at - which is more what he'd want to do, really.

Originally I just thought it was just trying to knock over the castle but there's way more rules than that

I remember this game as a kid, my older brother got it for Christmas . . but we played a completely different way, I never read the rules, I was going off what my brother said . . of how to play . . .
the 4 men (spies) were EVERYTHING . . .you would stand them up on your courtyard . . and the first to knock over all 4 men wins . . . very simple . . .and you would just use each other's caroms as they are being shot at you . . . no turns as well . . . .you just shoot like crazy in real time . . a much faster pace way of playing the game. Funny, I never knew the real rules . . .it was my older brother's game.

The REAL fun was switching out the elastics for heavy duty ones and make them real tight. Those 'pucks' would go flying like bullets.
