I wore my signature fragrance--long discontinued--from 1981 to November 2023 when I began to try new fragrances at my daughter's encouragement. It did not take me long to grow a large fragrance collection. In the spring of last year, I was talking to my daughter and realized that I had likely gotten enough perfumes to last me at least 10 years, if not the rest of my life. I slowed down after that. I'm not on a no-buy...maybe a low buy...but I only buy fragrances that resonate with me. I also instituted a rule that I have to buy a decant and use it before I can invest in a full bottle...no more blind buying.. That has proved helpful.
It's interesting because so many of the points of advice you gave is actually about not being addicted to consumption. I think especially because perfume is already not a "rational" purchase, but something about stimulating our senses or about how we self-identify, it easily spills over into a shopping addiction: the hunt for the "next" fragrance, or the prettier bottle, getting more compliments, etc. Staying clear-headed and focused in the world of perfumery (and fragrance social media) is HARD!
Hi Joanna! Interesting thoughts, I can agree with all of them❤ By the way, I have a little tip, how to have some economy when buying fragrances. I have parfume addicted friends am sometimes we buy some hyped or expensive scents and share with each other, making samples for friends. So this way we have so much different samples from each other for any occasion and mood. Maybe this thought can be useful for someone 🙏
Great advice. I have gotten to a place where I will not pay full price for perfumes, mist, body care or skin care any more. I wait for at least 30% off. And I love discovery sets. And I buy from decant sites to get a small sample first and then look for a dupe. That’s what I do especially with fragrances.
Agree on everything.I always test them in shops and mostly I do not like hyped fragrances.I just bought 10 ME samples and oh God, I only liked 3 of them.I am so happy I have done it cuz wasting my money even on 1 perfume would be sad.I was surprised I did not like what I thought would be my favourites and liked what I did not expect,so buying samples is the best or testing in the shops
These are some great tips, thank you!! I do my research before buying, so I've only ended up with only a handful of perfumes I don't like and I hope I'll slow down buying more, I have tons of wonderful scents already!! Have a great week!! 😊
You hit every item like the conductor! Well said I am speechless ❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰 this is one of many reasons I love you because you are very honest. You captivated the audience because of how you are ❤❤❤ I love this community not because of getting influenced into something I didn’t plan to. I enjoy learning from experts and people who gifted like you to be able to detect, to express, in the way I can not fathom. It’s beautiful to me.
Agree on everything. Blind buys in my case are 90%fails, I try to avoid it, although I do sometimes do it, as not everything can be tested. I also agree on the maceration issue, I buy a perfume to use it right away, not in six months, doesn't make sense to me.
Thanks for all the good advice! I get caught up in the fantasy of fragrances and what they evoke, their descriptions, TH-camrs raving about them, etc or finding the "perfect" version of something.
Great video! :) My tips are, test in store or get samples/decants. But better test in store first, then get a decant and after you've used up the decant, think about buying. Oftentimes I already get sick by a profile after using my decant a few times. Also, test thoroughly: different seasons, weather, occasions, on skin etc. Always look for sales, discounts or buy second hand. Never buy full price, no impulse purchaches and no blind buying. I know, it's not always that easy, but worth the try. :)
great video, I would like to see more influencers be more balanced like this in messaging with their audience, when I first got into middle eastern fragrance, I bought into a lot of hype and my expectations were set VERY high without anyone really saying- hey, these are different, sometimes they need to sit, the scent profiles are going to be different. things like that. I wasn't prepared for some of the hit and miss quality, but I have since found very nice hidden gems
Very informative video yes I can say I have a frangrance addiction to a certain extent. But theirs barriers I won't cross. #1 I won't buy no frangrace over $200. I will just get the clone, # 2 I won't buy the frangrace when it first come out I will just wait until the hype is over that's when the addiction is fed. you tell yourself I got to get it uuuh no you don't. #3 I only have Top 5 niche and 5 designer, and 5 blue fragrances. I was a gambling addict and alcoholic cost my family and alot of $$ . Fragrance addiction I can control.
Hi Joanna ! 🤗 I really enjoyed this video 🥰 I am addicted to buying perfumes and I am trying to blind buy less … but I still buy the ME and sometimes the 200 € or 150€ . I need to behave myself but … we the excuse that I am content creator I am always gaslighting myself 🤭🫣 I am not broke , but I spend way more that I should in fragrances … Oh well , I will try to keep my impulse buying more balanced 😅 Beijinho 💋 😊
Hello good morning, Great advice! I always look for stores to try or buy discovery sets, but I'm spending a few months in Portugal and I really wanted to try Santal Vanille (7virtoes). I couldn't find it in any physical store or get any samples. I ended up buying it in an online promotion, anxious because in Brazil you can't buy this perfume. It didn't look good on my skin at all! Even though I have perfumes with similar notes that I love, it didn't suit me. I just feel like it was a huge waste. I still don't know what I can do about it.
I also think there is something to "perfume addiction" sometimes I catch myself having a mood booster from the excitement of picking out and buying a new scent, it can turn into an expensive cycle very quickly. Certainly nothing wrong with that, but I can see where a person might become addicted to that high or that feeling
I agree with you. It can easily go out of control especially the spending part and before you know it, you’re broke but you smell great. 🤷♀️ Balance is the 🔑 😊
1. The maceration bit drives me bananas. I don't want to wait weeks or months for something to smell amazing. Id never biy food at a reataurant prices just to cook it all at home 2. It irritates me to see people stating that they hide purchases from their partners and see other people agree like it's funny. Budget. Owning 3 amazing perfumes is way more attractive than owning 100 and being ashamed or deceptive. At least, that's my approach.
Most of time niche are risky to blind buy. Blind buy in itself is risky & getting niche doubles. Most of time the best perfumes are non-hyped that exists 10- 20+ yrs . It tested the market for years, meaning they are so pleasant, well studied.
I have to disagree with your statement about maturation. Consider even any recipe you make. Just about anything that has to be mixed, if you wait, it gives the flavors of the ingredients to blend. Think about pasta sauce. You macerate (blend) your ingredients and can you eat it? Sure. I dont like it though, But the oregano is strong to the taste, it may smell overcome with garlic etc. It takes time for the flavors to merge (maturate). I have had that alcohol or gasoline smell. I've been hit with unmaturated ingredients and hated a perfume as a result. When I know that fragrance was blended right before being shipped, I expect it and don't judge it out of the gate. I have LOVED fragrances that I hated before maturation. You are doing yourself a disservice by just giving up. I would rather pay a cheaper price and let it maturate on my shelf then spend more for the company who had to pay to store it.
Thanks for sharing your thought. I respect your opinion. I have experienced fully matured and something that needs more maturation (expensive and affordable). I’ll say I had a lot of affordable ones that were already great even though they are not yet fully matured (so this is possible) The point of the video is that, consumers don’t need to think that all affordable perfumes need to mature in order to smell great. Perfumes are supposed to make us smell good from the get go. ✨

I have reduced my purchases by 90%, and I only buy samples now. You made very valid points, and I appreciate your honesty. ❤
This hobby can really be out of control. 90% is a great percentage. I am the same now as well.
Agree 💯 %! Samples are the best

Thank you for these great tips. I do the same thing, putting things in my cart until the price goes down.

Social media itself is teaching us overconsumption. At the end of the day passion and controlled expenditure should be greater than overconsumption ✨

Buying second hand is good but it takes a lot of effort because there are so much faking and price gouging out there. Sample sample sample!
True! I find perfume lover groups in FB the most reliable…
🙏👏👏👏

Dupes mean counterfeit.. what else can a dupe mean then???
I gaslight myself that i NEED to let the perfume sit for a while so i wouldn't feel like my blindbuy was a bust 😂
😂😂 nice reasoning
