    Whatever your religious or political views might be, seeing earthrise puts it all in perspective. That's us. That little blue ball is the place where THE ENTIRETY of all human history occurred and it's so small and insignificant.

      I was 21 and followed the entire space race to the moon between the Americans and the Russians. This was in a way was more fantastic than the landing. It was the first time we left Earth entirely and went to another world. This was true space exploration. As they were reading from Genesis left me in awe. Watching it as it was happening was almost as amazing. The people in NASA were also apprehensive about it but still decided to go. It was a giant step for Apollo 11 to land on the moon. Earthrise was another awe inspiring moment. Of course we didn't see the pictures until they came back.So many space firsts that the Russians always seem to come up with. Exploring the unknown always gave me chills and Apollo 8 was exactly that. It was a indeed a Merry Christmas.

    Back in the 80's my dad was a corporate business jet pilot. There was a used airplane dealer at the airport. The dealer came and found my dad and asked him if he had time on a Beech Duke. My dad told him he had several hundred hours on a Duke. The dealer was glad and told my dad, " Frank Borman is flying-in to look at the one i have for sale, and you are the only one here today that can give him a check ride." my dad was incredulous, "you want me to give frank borman a check ride? He was a test pilot and astronaut......he flew to the moon!" Well, Borman flew in and they came and found my dad. He showed Borman all the systems, controls, safety concerns, weights, measurements, limitations and etc. Borman told my dad he would prefer if my dad flew first in the left seat and watched him. So they flew one circuit in the pattern, landed, and switched seats. My dad said Borman's approach and landing was like he had thousands of hours on the Duke. I asked my dad if he was a typical cocky fighter jock with a cavalier attitude that treated the check ride as a formality. My dad answered, " he was the exact opposite of that. He was extremely kind, gracious, and asked A LOT of questions." He knew my dad was taking time out of his day to help with the plane transaction. Borman profusely thanked him for his help. My dad asked if he wouldn't mind signing the back of his business card. He was more than happy to oblige. He even went a step further. He somehow produced a glossy photo of the "earth rise." (perhaps from his briefcase) he signed it "frank borman - apollo 8 - commander." Years later my dad gave me the signed business card and photo. I framed them and have them hanging in my office at work. I can't tell you how many times people have asked about it. It's a cool story to tell, i think. My dad said, "you know, all the celebrities, politicians, and men of industry i flew over the years - not once was i ever intimidated by anyone. But Frank Borman was the most intimidated i've ever been in a cockpit, and he was also the friendliest person i've flown with." i told my dad i think it right he felt that way. Those apollo era astronauts had ice water in their veins.

    More than half of the 29 astronauts who flew Apollo missions are now deceased, but as of today December 21, 2022 all three crewmen of Apollo 8 are still living, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders.

    • @brianarbenz7206
      @brianarbenz7206 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am so glad they have such longevity.... Also, it's odd that the astronauts to die young from completely non-space and non-aviation reasons were all Apollo Command Module pilots. Don Eisele of Apollo 7 died of a heart attack in 1976 (while on a goodwill mission to China), Ron Evans of 17 died of a heart attack in 1990, and 13's Jack Swigert died of cancer in 1982.

      The crew members of Apollo 8, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders are the only complete Apollo crew still alive. Frank Borman and James Lovell, both age 95, are the two oldest surviving Apollo astronauts. Borman, born March 14, 1928, is 11 days older than Lovell, born March 25, 1928. The remaining seven Apollo astronauts still living as of today September 10, 2023 and the Apollo mission number(s) they were on are:
      Buzz Aldrin 11
      David Scott 9, 15
      Charles Duke 16

Man also woke up to the folly that was the damage he has been doing to our small insignificant life boat in the middle of the cosmos... this image is definitely one of the defining images of human history, not just the 20th Century... My memory is sure about that, but, living in Florida at that time, we saw 3 of those Saturn-Apollo spacecraft's leave the Cape for the moon. I will never forget Apollo 13 which almost turned out in a disaster. Then there were the two Space Shuttle disasters and fortunately all the other Space Shuttle flights that were successful! I'm so embarrassed... I'm 44... I think of myself as a bright person aware of social events... I never realized we got to the Moon BEFORE the famous Apollo 11 mission with Armstrong and Aldrin landing and stepping foot on the Moon... I didn't realize a crew had been there circling around the Moon beforehand. Sure, they didn't land. But it's still an amazing Soviet-crushing feat. That alone would've destroyed the morale of the red Soviets.

    • @brianarbenz7206
      @brianarbenz7206 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, the USSR took it in stride. Pravda published a congratulatory editorial saluting the Apollo 8 crew members by name. A lot of people in the Soviet space program were pleased that the Kremlin abandoned the idea of landing people on the moon, as deaths had happened from too much political pressure to be fast. This freed up their people and resources to concentrate on space stations and Venus landings, which they did quite well.

      The good thing about this picture is that both religious-minded people and secular, more science-oriented people, can both look at this picture and find beauty, wonder, and affirmation of their beliefs..... so maybe hold on to that uniting notion instead.

    All this carping in the comments about Al Gore’s presence is ridiculous. He said nothing controversial in this video. Apollo 8’s legacy is the discovery of Spaceship Earth and all Gore does here is to (correctly) explain the significance of Anders’ “Earthrise” photo.
    In my group in that day, Richard Nixon was the politician we loved to hate. But it does not bother me in the least to see and hear Nixon welcoming the Apollo 11 astronauts back to Earth.
    I’ve known some people who can never set politics aside for a moment, no matter the occasion or how much time has passed. They are unhappy people. That’s no way to live.

    Let us look forward. Anders thinks we should be content to only send robotic missions. Borman thinks we should send men,, but just for 'flags and footprints'. I am with exploration, and colonization. I suspect that any colonizers of Mars will die there, I even expect that. But there was once and then twice, a Roanoke Colony, 1585 and then 1587. No trace of the people who stayed was ever found. There are two people right this moment racing across Antarctica,, each trying to be the first to cross the continent alone and unaided.
    Let us go see and go do.

      You will have to do your own research into that. They have memory holed almost everything from pre 1950.
      Before the fake "moon landing'" this was the prevailing view in academia. I have talked to scientists from this era myself.
      It was also believed that space was completely black in the visual spectrum. Simply that the ability to see objects like the sun/moon were based on an interaction with the nobel gases in the air.
      This is actually quite evident with high altitude balloon footage where stars become dimmer and dimmer as the balloon ascends.
      The video below (search for it) is an interesting piece of that deleted history. Today this guy comes across as a crackpot, but in 1950 this was the scientific view ( obviously not as far as the public were concerned )
      1965 scientist claims the moon is plasma, landing on it won’t be possible

    Happy Birthday James "Jim" Arthur Lovell Jr. born on March 25, 1928. He is an American retired astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot and mechanical engineer. In 1968, as command module pilot of Apollo 8, he became, with Frank Borman and William Anders, one of the first three astronauts to fly to and orbit the Moon. He then commanded the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970 which, after a critical failure en route, circled the Moon and returned safely to Earth. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Lovell

    CAUTION ..reality check ahead . First this picture of earth was taken in low orbit closer than 200miles above earth through a window cropping the lower part of the earth . Job #1 would be to take moving pictures of the whole earth spinning . 150billion dollars and 50 years later , NASA admits they have no such photo or video from the moon of the whole earth . All are computer generated . 29 volts was their power for cooling and heating and video and lights per the schematics of the lunar lander . No stars are in the background around earth . The horizon of the moon is too close as it is a studio with NO STARS . Why no real photo of the whole earth from space ? Because they made movies instead . Man can not pass through the van allen radiation belts today safely per NASA Orion program . Robert Simmons created all photos of earth on computers from strips of data as he admits no real photo exists . The telemetry from all moon landings was destroyed according to NASA . The dune buggies taken to the moon were 150 million dollars each and had fixed fenders 1'' inch from the tires which would be fake due to the weight and lack of needing them . No cops on the moon . How do you propel or slow down in the vacuum of space ? The lack of stars is the easiest fraud to detect .This earth photo is described in detail in " a funny thing happened on the way to the moon " documentary by Sibell .The official photos of NASA show how fake all the moon landings are / were . A fraud by free masons also who operate NASA and the international space program with other countries participating in the hoax . All the horizons are the sameor very close like a movie set . Stanley Kubrik admitted to making some of the fake films . He did 2001 a space odysey . It was much clearer and had stars . The stars here would have given away their fakery by being in the wrong place . If weare spinning 1067 mph at the equator and hurtling around the sun at 66,600 mph , while the sun is traveling 450,000 mph . Why are the constellations always in the same place ? Six trips to the moon and all we get is this FAKE photo of low orbit partial clouded blue marble , unrecognizable contnents and too much clouds . Or are those chem trails ? All NASA 12 computer generated photo shop pictures of the earth show varying sizes of the contnents in relation to the perimeter of the earth as shown . In other words NASA faked them all including the one shown . What on earth are they hiding all these years ? No satellites photos showing 20,000 satellites in low orbit around the earth either . Only CGI , and every one beLIEves them to be real . Naysaying and condemnation , with out investigation is the highest form of ignorance " -albert einstein

      The camera exposures and F-stops were adjusted to take pictures of the brightly lit moon below the orbiting spacecraft. As such the stars were to dim to show up in the photographs. Its the same thing as gong outside during the daytime on earth and trying to photograph the stars. A camera or your eyes will only be able to see the sun and the moon if it is risen. But to see any stars you'd have to wait until night time.

    • @bradyspace
      @bradyspace 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The astro nots never claimed to see stars from the moon. So, why all the gab about fstops and exposure? They say its easier to convince of a lie then convince them theyve been lied to. Not sure why people need their moon fantasies.

    • @joevignolor4u949
      @joevignolor4u949 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bradyspace On the sunlit side of the moon they couldn't see stars but on the dark side they could. The human eye works like a camera in that the iris opens and closes depending on the amount of light present. So the analogy to F-stops and exposure fits. All in all there is too much hard physical and documentary evidence to not believe that the moon landings were real. I've seen lots of it myself. In contrast any of the claims made by hoaxers have been repeatedly debunked.
