  • Another historic day at Ireland West Airport as we welcomed the largest passenger aircraft currently flying worldwide, to the airport. The Airbus A380, with a capacity for 868 passengers, landed just after 4pm on February 20th and will be parked and stored at Eirtrade’s facility at Ireland West Airport. This is the largest passenger aircraft to ever land at Ireland West Airport.

I reckon it could just about get out with min fuel & load. Just.
      Runways a decent 7,700ft.
That would need 6,800ft light & a good headwind.

That airport is a strange beast which is located in the middle of nowhere between Galway and Sligo. The builders sure are optimistic about how much business will come their way. Shannon Airport is much better positioned right on the motorway between Limerick and Galway.

It was completed in 1986 in what was thought at the time, to be the height of the cold war. The money to build it seemed to have come from nowhere. Various raffles and bazaars were arranged by the founder, Monsignor Horan, to get an airport that would turn Knock into the new Lourdes as there is a Marian shrine there. Cynical people have suggested NATO funded it. Not so cynical people tend to agree that it couldn't have been built on the takings from a few raffles and ceilis alone. As you can see it was built to cope with aircraft far bigger than would ever be needed to transport pilgrims.

Btw There's no Motorway. The N18 is classified as a National Primary Route. Motorways have a Speed Limit of 120km/h. The N18 is only 100km/h
