    The background music was not your friend this time around.
    It interfered with your spoken message.
    The trick is to relegate the background music to the lower frequencies so they don't compete with the voice for the important spoken word frequencies where important word cues (plosives, fricatives, etc) reside.
    Now you know. I wish you'd re-edit, for the benefit of all.

    as someone who loves bends and doesn't mind the requirement of a lighter touch i really enjoyed my first try of a scalloped neck on saturday. tried a yngwie strat for the first time! it was a lot of fun now i dream about having a scalloped neck!

      now if i can only figure out how to have a floating trem and bend notes without putting others out of tune then i will be set!

    Great video Tommaso. Thanks for sharing. Personally, the music is distracting to me. I would turn down the volume a little.

    1st thing I think of is Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen.

    It almost feels like cheating. It feels amazing to play. Like you unlocked god mode in a game lol

    Good point on vertical string bending into a scallop, rather than side bending on a flat board, (easier on fingers.)

    It's basically like super tall frets.

    I have one guitar with scalloped frets, it’s used for studio work.
    The scallops allow for faster legato runs, less friction of having fingers contacting the surface of the fretboard, and easier bends... plus it forces me to play with better technique so the result is cleaner solos.

      Interesting! I personally found legato more difficult when I started with the scalloped neck. After a bit of practice it made no difference with or without the scalloped neck, but it's interesting that for you it was easier.

    The advantages are like those of the sitar neck, making subtle or extreme ornamentations considerably easier to play. If you play chords lightly and in tune, OR deliberately bend them, it's all pluspoints as far as I can tell.

    Do you find playing live with adrenaline flowing in front of a crowd and what not it causes you to fret out with the scalloped frets? I'm really strongly considering buying a scalloped fret strat but I'm worried playing a live gig with one.

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar
      @MusicTheoryForGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a matter to get used to it, and to play live often, until the adrenaline is not a problem anymore :-) I also use gauge 10 strings, so it's hard to play them only by pressure.

    What about radius? Is a larger or smaller radius better on scalloped fretboards?

      Depends what you like. I prefer a smaller radius, but I'm in the minority here...

    There is one more advantage - on a scalloped fretboard you have no choice, you have to have a relaxed left hand, it's a great training tool that transitions well to normal fretboards.

    The background music complete ruins what your trying to show people about scalloped guitars.

    I don't know about zero impact on tone. You are removing wood. I have a scalloped maple neck and it brightened the tone of the two guitars I put it on. I would definitely go with a rosewood fretboard like yours if I ever get another scalloped neck. I do like the way it feels for bends and clarity of the high notes.

    I know I wouldn't like scalloped frets because I like my low frets as it is. :)

    Good explanation and as you explained, I would much rather prefer tall frets, pretty much has the same effect without removing material off the fretboard. If you only want some frets like that then that would be a reason for scalloping though. Would be interesting if you made a vid showing super tall frets. Good vid, cheers.

    I have a Yngwie J Malmsteen and a Ritchie Blackmore Strat. Both Scalloped in a different Shape. I use .07s Strings, super lightweight strings allow Super Bends plus! On a Scalloped Neck use the technique I call "Micro-Vibrato", by quickly bending pushing straight down into the Fret-Board. So as to sound like "Tremolo" one Note Bends or Trills, or Hammer Ons, & Pull Offs thus Become a Unique to a Scalloped Guitar. Leads thus become a Unique to You with Accents that Can NOT be Duplicated by a Flat Neck guitar. My buddy Alvin Loved Malmsteen, and had Several Yngwie Strats! He told me the "KEY" to his Techniques were .07s Strings! Don't Worry about "Thin Tone" Back Off on the Trebble at the Amp, Bass & Mid on 10, then use Guitar to fine tune your tone! Liked your Video, BUT Can't Imagine Me using .10s on this guitar!

      Interesting :-) If I play .07 I break them (I pick quite aggressively). Maybe I should try them again.

    I wonder why people don’t simply use thicker fret wire and raise the action instead of cutting into the neck.

    Hi there! I got a 1976 strat I've had since I was 18... Almost 20 years ago 😏😇 I scalloped it a year ago and I was VERY surprised how the tone changed, and I have no idea why 😳 it was almost as thought it got cleaner, like a broad cut around 400hz +-. I have no idea. There was no change in setup, string heights, and the neck angle was left untouched. I play with quite a high action, so I'm still no wiser. 😳 Different for all guitars I'm sure.

    • @MusicTheoryForGuitar
      @MusicTheoryForGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting. My guitar did not change tone at all. What wood is your fretboard made of? Mine is rosewood.

    • @guitarlicksntricks
      @guitarlicksntricks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MusicTheoryForGuitar maybe it's varies per instrument man? Mine is single piece maple, which is a very dense wood, maybe such a dense wood, a single piece, losing enough matter would vibrate/resonate differently to a veneered rosewood board as there's physically less rosewood than maple on the neck? No idea man.
      But I definitely WASN'T expecting the tone to change at all. I wasn't even listening for it... Just concentrating on the feel of the neck, so very surprised. 🤔

    I thought bending at the "normal" would be against the plain of the fretboard, so the first example would be normal bending, no?

    what about aggresive pulling-off the strings sideways hard to open notes?,with a bend before the string snaps away/pull off from the finger? The G-string pull-off Blues stuff pressed and pulled againt the wood fretboard?

      You can also do like some artists do. For instance Steve Vai only has the last 5 frets on his guitar scalloped. Others do from the 12th fret down. Its really personal preference
