Today we will be making Aleppo soap one of the most traditional and oldest soaps in the world. Made from laurel berry oil and pure olive oil it starts with a deep green colour that cures to a golden hue.
The cost of laurel berry oil has risen hugely in recent years making it even more difficult for the traditional makers who use between 5% and 30% laurel berry oil to make the soap. Aleppo soap is normally unscented as it has a natural earthy scent that whisks you to the sunbaked fruit orchards of Greece and Turkey. It is handmade in Syria but sadly the war-torn country has lost many of its historic soap factories and it's important to honour and support historical and traditional soaps and crafts, share their story and history and support the remaining producers. Aleppo soap has a longer curing time than many soaps and is traditionally dried naturally by stacking it into huge piles that resemble chimneys for a minimum of 7 months. My recipe honours this traditional soap #aleppo_soap recipe using just 4 ingredients including the lye and shows you how you can make your own homemade Aleppo soap inspired by its heritage and classic beauty at home however we are using the cold process method rather than a hot process method to produce a smoother finish.

Love Aleppo Soap. I make it to 60% OO and 40% Laurel Berry Oil. First time I made for a friend that was going trough radio and Chemotherapy. She was always with skin problems and she sweared that aleppo help her a lot. She passed in 03/2020 and I will continue to make it to help others like it did to her. I buy the LB Oil from wholesale supplies plus in the US.

I made it with 70% OO and 30% LBO , so silky love it and love it’s scent

Hello, without being offensive, Aleppo soap does not contain coconut oil. Just extra virgin olive oil and first cold pressing and bay laurel oil between 5 and 40% depending on the use you want to make of it. 5 to 15% for sensitive skin, 20 to 30% for normal skin and 30 to 40% for problem skin. The percentage is of course that of bay laurel oil. Real Aleppo soap does not foam much. This is not the first video I see or it is not the original recipe that is implemented while giving it the name. Just like Castile soap is 100% olive oil with nothing else, no fragrance whatsoever.
I hope I didn't upset you, it was not my intention but being a big fan of the oldest soaps, namely in order, Aleppo, Castile, Marseille, I wanted to clarify. Thank you for this video which I appreciated the technique
Hi Petra, you are entirely correct which is why I explained all these points in the video :) As I mentioned although the classic does not contain coconut, I like to add a little to my own. You did not upset me at all, I feel it's important to show the heritage of such beautiful soaps and I am so glad to hear that you love them too :)

I love Aleppo soap. Unfortunately was not a good seller for me but that is ok, I made it just with 60% olive and 40% Laurel fruit oil, no fragrance or EO.and let it cured for an entire year. The lather was amazing. After that I made a variation with 15% only and added essential oils

I made it with 20% Laurel oil and 80% Olive oil. After 2 years, it’s still a bit slimy but it is gorgeous on the skin. I looked at your recipe and like it! Think I added too high of a percent of Olive oil and like your addition of Coconut oil. Thanks!!

olive oil seems to not cure well in my area for over three months. how long would cure time be if laurel berry is added. not sure if laurel berry has a preservative effect . nice recipe to try today. thank you and happy holidays.
This looks like a great soap to make, thanks for the video. Did you leave the soap to cure at room temperature in the usual way before unmoulding?
Hi Diane, You can insulate as normal. I popped it into a warm oven that had been preheated to 80 degrees which was turned off before the soap was placed in it and it was just left in that warm environment for around 4 hours.

How can I tweak this to add in Black Seed oil, Castor Oil, oat meal and goat milk?
According to the soap calculator, the mixture of olive oil and laurel oil only , gave me values outside the acceptable range in the final list of soap bar quality
Is this acceptable?
Can it be improved without chemical additives?

The calculator numbers are only a guide and more suited to commercial production than handmade soaps. I believe that the hundreds of years this soap has been popular says a lot about it :) No chemical additives needed
I received Aleppo Soap sample and found it to be so slimy as it was olive and laurel berry only...So I was wondering did the coconut oil addition and less olive oil eliminate that slimy feel? I have Laurel berry oil on hand, but hesitant as I didn't like the feel of the sample bar I got. Thanks..
You will find any high olive soap will have that feel :)

As you already mentioned in the video, the real Aleppo soap should be made with hot process.
I am a regular user of brand "A'llaurel". Have you ever tried their Aleppo soaps? Are they real deal?

You can run it through a SAP calc without coconut
Try 70% olive and 30% laurel. It will take a longer time to cure, more like a castille

I have a question: I tried to use the Aleppo soap bar to make my own shampoo. What I did so far is mixing it with water and essential oil but the texture is not exactly like shampoo. It is not one smooth substance. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Kindly let me know this: I am from Sri Lanka and oils we use r in liquid form at room temperature. So do we need to heat the oils before adding the lye solution? In order to match the temperature of lye solution and oil.
You might find that room temperature is fine if they melt fuly
Hi, I made a soap with 30% laurel berry oil (bescented) and 70% olive oil, hot process. But after 1 year of cure it is not green inside, do you know why?
It's all down the oil used and can change hugely in colour. I bet the soap is beautiful though

Most of the supplies are simple ingredients that you can find. Sodium hydroxide might be in a plumbing company or decorating store. The laurel berry oil is a speciality oil for most countries

We used to run a large scale manufacturing business and cosmetic ingredients supplies business. I have been teaching people how to make soap and cosmetics and business development exclusively full time now for 15 years now
I missed the oven bit- what temp/how long?
It is placed in an oven that has been brought up to 80C and then turned off. Leave it on the warm oven overnight with no heat just the warmth
How many hours should take to cure?
Traditional Aleppo soap is cured for 7 to 12 months

Aleppo soap is the reason my scalp got messed up. I was raised using this soap and I hate it. It is sooo drying.

Laurel is typically very good for your scalp and hair. Surprised by this. You may have had a ratio of lye that was too much…
