The main rice storage canal is located in Cheach commune, Kamchay Mear district, Prey Veng province, 155 kilometers northeast of Phnom Penh. The main canal, built since the Pol Pot era, receives water from local rainfall sources and from King Sdech Kan farm to irrigate additional arable land in Kanhchriech and Kamchay Mear districts of Prey Veng province.
The main canal of Touk Srov has encountered a situation where the land is shallow and the sediment is almost completely unable to irrigate according to the demand on the existing agricultural land, which causes the people in the area to face the problem of lack of water for agricultural use. And daily use.
In order to help solve the water problem for the people, the engineering department of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology inspected and studied and collected data to compile project documents according to the technical specifications for the rehabilitation of the main canal.
In 2023, the work to rehabilitate the main rice storage canal was carried out in the first phase with a length of 7,500 meters in the eastern Kork Kong commune, Kanhchriech district, Prey Veng province. Furthermore, in 2024, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has implemented the project to rehabilitate the second phase of the 7,500-meter-long rice storage canal in Cheach commune, Kamchay Mear district, Prey Veng province.
According to Mr. Meng Veasna, the manager of the construction site of the second phase of the main canal, said that the main work includes: 1) the restoration of the main canal 7,500 meters long 2) the construction of drainage on the main canal. 6 places: 3) Construction of drainage works on 6 main canals, 4) Construction of dams on 3 main canals (2 doors) and 5) Construction of drainage canals on 2 main canals.
According to the construction manager, the rehabilitation work of the main rice canal started in January 2024, so far, the progress of the second phase of the rice storage project and the construction of artistic structures has reached about 65%. This is scheduled to be completed in June 2024.
Local authorities and local people expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the leadership of the Royal Government and the leadership of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, as well as the project implementation team of the Department of Engineering for the rehabilitation of the main rice canal. After the rehabilitation of the second phase of the main rice storage canal and the completion of the technical construction, the people in Cheach commune, Kamchay Mear district, Prey Veng province, about 1009 families will receive the main canal to irrigate the area to cultivate rain-fed rice. 676 hectares, 380 hectares of dry rice and 10 hectares of mixed crops. At the same time, the main canal will serve as a potential transportation route for agricultural transport and local traffic, as well as contribute to tackling climate change, such as droughts and floods, and protecting local natural resources. .
