  • In this video, Fr. Josh Johnson teaches us how to read Scripture prayerfully and come away with something we can do to improve our faith in God. He demonstrates how lectio divina is a helpful guide in our walk toward eternity.

How Fr. Josh explained this in a very millennial way is awesome! I usually see speakers of God to be very solemn and calm which sometimes, students in my generation may find a little bit boring. but of how Fr. Josh delivered his content is very fun and cool. I could listen to him all day long.

@AndresFelipeGonzalez13 You are right. I've read that passage before, but the weight of that statement never hit me--until now, after you pointed it out. Why do we call priests "fathers"?

We should talk in a reverent and respectful way about God and the Holy Scripture. And I'm not sure what 'yo, what's up man'- rapper style and expressions like 'chill with God' has to do with bowing down the head and knees before the Lord

    • @timothyjfry
      @timothyjfry 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

For the same reason you call your dad “father”: priests, as shepherds of the faithful, are spiritual parents to us, leading us in ways of righteousness.
These things must be read in context. What Christ was talking about here is how the Pharisees were seeking after the honor of the title “Rabbi”. There is nothing wrong with calling someone Rabbi, but there is something wrong with a person letting that go to their head.
I was in court one time (in my role as a police officer lol) and the defendant was a PHd. When the judge addressed him, he called him “mister”, as in “Mr. Smith”. The defendant responded, “Please call me Dr. Smith; I believe I have earned it!” To everyone’s delight, the judge turned to the prosecutor and said, “Wait a minute… we all hold Juris Doctor degrees… we should ALL be calling EACH OTHER “doctor”.” Following this came the old schtick from the movie “Airplane”, with BOTH attorneys and the judge repeatedly calling each other “doctor”, followed by much laughter, followed by the judge, once again, referring to the defendant as “Mr. Smith” (or whatever his name was).
This is the sense in which Jesus tells his story, and in which he instructs us - in similar fashion to how that judge demonstrated - to call “no man on Earth Father”.
One side note: if Jesus meant this literally, we would not be able to keep the commandment given to Moses to honor thy… well, you get it.
Here’s the scripture - in context - for you to check out:
“Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.“

@@lobstahgirlyou should ask your Priest. But I believe it has to do with showing reverence to the fact they are to represent Jesus and the sacrifice they gave by following Him. It’s not that they themselves want honor but rather a way of respect.

Lord give me faith. I'm sorry for doubting you. I'm sorry that sometimes I'm skeptical, sometimes even to the degree of that of the Pharisees. Change my heart. I want to believe.

      Bertrand Russel:
"Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool's paradise, for only a fool will think that it is happiness. "
You ask to get rid of critical thinking. But aren't all crimes committed in the name of religion based on blind faith?
Doubt and uncertainty are the characteristics of science, of truth seeking.
I believe the New Testament survives criticism.
Seek and you will find. At any rate people are different. Each one has his own gift. Yours may be exegeses.

This is so awesome! It made me look at things differently regarding that specific scripture. Too often I am so busy caught up with busy things regarding family matters and obligations and I too sometimes resent that it appears that I am going it alone in some regards while some family members seem to ignore some of the responsibilities that we are faced with regarding our elderly mom and other such things. I found myself having what I thought of as "righteous indignation" but you know what? I like Martha forgot to go to God first. Everyday is a new opportunity to spend some time with Him via HIS WORD. The times in my life when I am consistent in that are always more peaceful. It's not that the difficult things are gone, it is that I am better prepared and have more of a righteous priority system than any other thing. So, thank you, Father Josh for not only teaching about Lectio Devina, but for giving me a new outlook on an old scripture. That is why His word is always FRESH no matter how many times one might have read a passage, it can be interpreted in different ways. Father Josh, you are so awesome!
