233" Giant Found Dead, How To Fertilize Plots | Midwest Whitetail

  • Last November, Caleb and his wife, Taylor, had an encounter of a lifetime with a buck named "The GOAT". Unfortunately, after a marginal hit, the buck got away. Caleb refused to give up looking for the deer, and on March 25th he recovered the deer in a nearby creek. Caleb tells the entire story of the hunt, the recovery, and the history with an amazing 233" whitetail. We then join Skip Sligh as he discusses the importance of soil testing and how to fertilize food plots.

    Been there done that. (Not on a 230" deer but big.) At 24 yards they almost never can jump enough to matter. But, in that heat of the moment it's so easy to make a mistake. Glad you stayed with it.

    Awesome video!! For all the haters out there, they have no idea what it's like to hunt in the cold in a stand with a bow and have a 200 inch + buck show up. I salute your efforts!! A true giant and it's very possible that deer died from being 9 years old!!!

      @Joe-fc8ne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I wondered if he feels like he took a 200+inch buck that night ? I absolutely understand the want to find him, he's a 200 with a giant typical frame. I would want to find him if I'd shot him or not. I'm so glad he did keep on until he found him. I feel like the Iowa winter along with his age could have easily played at least as much of a factor in his demise as that low, low shot. I really am so sorry Caleb. Heartbreaking deal. Glad he hangs on your wall either way.

      Still waiting for my closure from October 3, 2010.. I was just 17 years old and shot the biggest buck I still have ever seen while hunting, smoked him there was good blood everywhere, went back to the truck to grab my dad and buddy and on the way to start tracking him we get the news from the property owner that was driving around that one of the neighboring lease hunters just loaded a giant into his truck in a hurry and drove off.. we found his spike buck with an arrow sticking out of its guts while tracking my deer.. he made a poor shot on a super young buck and stumbled across mine while he was tracking his is all I can imagine happened, the blood trails from both deer literally intersected.. I still think about this all the time and it’s really gotten me down a lot of times.. I wish I could at least see a picture of him dead or his mount or something! And show my dad that all these years he was as big as I said he was, nobody has ever seen a buck that big in our hunting group.. closure has got to feel bittersweet but much needed..

    If you've never wounded a deer you are either the best hunter that's ever walked the earth or you just haven't done a lot of hunting. Either way the shot was just low and kudos to the hunter for not giving up. If you are a true bowhunter this is just something that comes with the territory and when it happens all you can do is make ample efforts to recover the animal.

    I had an experience eerily similar to this the same year. We don't have quite the same quality of deer where i hunt. But we had a thick non-typical buck that was one of the best bucks we've had on camera. I put myself self in the perfect spot to harvest him, but a doe saw me draw my bow. The buck didnt run, but I was nervous and rush the shot. I hit high one-lunged him. Our search came up empty. Everything he said about sleepless nights and beating yourself up hit very close to home. I was convinced that he didnt make it, but a neighbor found the sheds. Now I'm hoping he made it through a tough MN winter and I will have another shot at him.

    I've debated on whether to add my opinion to the discussion for a while now. I'm not one who would normally criticize another hunter, we all need to stick together, but in this case I just have to get this off my chest. I cannot believe Caleb Byers is taking credit for killing that buck. His shot was nothing more than a flesh wound. You could tell simply by the buck's reaction after the shot. Then he was caught on camera the next day doing just fine. To say that infection set in 7 to 10 days after the shot is nonsense. The beauty of shooting an animal with a razor sharp broadhead is that it's such a clean wound. It's not like a gunshot wound that would turn into gangrene. That clean cut likely healed up way before any infection could set in. There are a number of ways that buck could have died that had nothing to do with Caleb's hit. In his weakened state from the rut he could have been dragged down by coyotes. Another hunter could have shot him during gun season and not found him. He could have even been shot from the road by a poacher. Nobody knows. I mean, come on. How many deer do we see hit through one lung or high on the back that go on to heal up? You'll never convince me that that minor cut in the brisket contributed to the deer's death. I also have to mention....because of this and one other incident, I've lost a lot of respect for Caleb. When he took Taylor's bow and sho her buck, he robbed her of that deer. That was HER hunt that day. He should have let that deer walk and let her hunt him another day. Was it really that important that he kill that deer for the camera? That was the height of selfishness. For crying out loud, you're young and you live in Iowa. You're going to have huge deer to kill for years to come. Don't steal your wife's thunder. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get slammed for my opinion, but at my age (59), I just don't care anymore. I'm sure when Caleb gets to be my age, he'll see things differently, too.

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Russell, there are always two sides to every argument, of course. I understand your position. I am pretty neutral. I know that Caleb and Taylor both hunt hard and are always trying to do the most ethical things they can, but sometimes it doesn't work out as planned. I have had it happen to me often enough. I hate it and I hate the backlash I get from some viewers, but we still show everything even if we fail. Also, regarding Caleb shooting Taylor's buck - I think that is something they discuss regularly and is part of their plan when they get to the tree - especially certain trees. I don't think they see these deer (or hunts) as one person's or the other's. I think it is a team deal for them. It is so hard to get a mature buck within bow range that whoever kills the buck is reason for celebration. At least that is the way I take it from talking with them. I appreciate the support. Have a great day. -Bill

      Seriously, I have heard of bucks that were shot in the brisket and died 12 days later, they took it to a deer biologist and he said that it was hit in the brisket and that infection was the cause of death.

      @russelllangworthy8855 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brocksluga2519 You"re probably talking about a deer shot with a gun. In that situation, yes, it would be very probable that infection would set in. I do find it interesting though, that someone would go to the trouble of taking a dead deer to a biologist to determine cause of death. I've found numerous dead deer in the woods and never had that level of curiosity.

      totally agree.. to take credit saying you "harvested" this animal in that situation is completely ridiculous. even if he did hit that buck..which we didnt see an arrow or any sign of impact..like you said it was a flesh would at best. countless other hunters could have wounded it far greater than he did in that span of time between shot and retrieval of head... he found a dead head.. plain and simple.
