  • In this Microsoft Access tutorial, I will show you how to display a Subform inside a Continous Form.
Em (Platinum Member) asks, "I’m trying to create a subform inside of a continuous form and it’s not working. Access gives me an error message and won’t let me do it. Do you have a workaround?"

Silver Members and up get access to an EXTENDED CUT of this video which covers additional examples. That video will show you how keep the customers and contacts as two separate continuous forms side-by-side. As you move from customer to customer it will sync up the contact list. When you close the customer form, the contact form will close.

I've been developing Access Client app's for decades, yep I'm old. This is one of the few sites that I have learned something from.
Right now MSAccess gets no love from the Enterprise customers even though most of them already own it. Server connections to MySQL, SQLServer are pretty simple and robust. I keep getting "Why do you write this as a Web App?" I talk to them about the cost of ownership, additional server requirements, complex frameworks with 100's of possible dependencies, browser compatibility issues, yada, yada, yada.
I do develop web app's and find simple things like a data-bound grid control almost impossible to do without a few hours of work even with the best $2k library.
There are some areas of valid concerns including app security, limited UI (Expandable grid, true sub-nested grids) that usually can be addressed with a clever solution like the one in this video. Thank you for your time and for letting me vent a little. Keep Broadcasting.

Vent anytime you want. LOL. I'm glad my videos are helpful for you. Yeah, enterprise self-proclaimed "IT gurus" always look down on Access as if it's some red-headed stepchild. Access is powerful, versatile, and great for rapid development. If you need more power, hook it up to SQL Server, but for front-end development on the desktop NOTHING beats it. Web apps are a different story, but Access was never intended to be a web-based database (and those crappy Access Web Apps were misconceived and poorly executed from the beginning.) Maybe one of these days MS will come out with a good simple front-end for Access on the web. Until then, I'll continue to develop in Access, put my data that needs to be online into SQL Server, and develop front ends manually using ASP. Works for me. :)

Thank you so much! I did not know about this!
In datasheet view, subforms are open with a little + button on the left side of the record... Have you ever replicated the same functionality of that "+" button using continuous forms?
    Thanks again!

No. I don't usually define global relationships, and you need those for the little + thingy to appear. Instead, I would just use a subform.

This problem eluded me for a while, thanks for this video. Can I ask a quick question. Using your example customer and contacts, how do I limit the form so that it opens it only shows customers with contacts. ie, only show the customer if they have contacts.
I'm using it in the customer with orders, so my continues form would be customers with orders. I don't want the customer to appear if they cont have orders

Base the parent form on a query which joins customers and orders. Use a standard INNER JOIN. This will prevent you from seeing customers without orders, and vice versa.

@@599CD Thanks for talking the time to reply. That was in fact what I tried, but what happens is a get duplicate records from customer side. So if I have 3 subform records I send up with 3 duplicate parent records. In reports I can just group by customer name, but that does not work on forms. So from the 1:Many relationship I get duplicated customer names.
