Gary, I purchased a 2008 528xi that wont shift from park. I purchased a 047 solenoid pack to fix the issue. I pulled the valve body and the bridge seal looked in great shape (I've done dozens of these services and never seen a cracked one for whatit's worth, perhaps colder in Seattle). The code is 4E20 hard (as it wont go away and pops immediately back). The sleeve and pan were per records dealer replaced 15-20k miles ago. The customer was scared off, 10k from bmw for a new tranny no repair no valve body certainly no solenoids. Anyway, I really appreciate your kind nature and informative videos and I am looking forward to replacing the valve body solenoids (all) and the bridge, sleeve and I am leaving the 4 additional sleeves alone as I have only once changed those and these "look fine to me". I looked at a 6hp diagram and it points to solenoid valve 1 being the release from park solenoid which is precisely the 4E20 code. I will update my comment with the success or failure of the repair later this week or early next. I should receive the solenoids in 2 days (6/22/18). Thanks again, I may add auto trans repair to my skill set as I would like to rebuild an auto trannie one day soon. So far we just do the basics such as valve body out as we don't specialize in tranny rebuild just service. Anyway! You're awesome and we appreciate it. Thumbs up! Thank you!
Yep. E-shift or m-shift? I've heard both. It has the green park solenoid and a pack of 8. The silver shift lever and park is a button. The update style shifter than came out in 2007 2098 range. Great video thanks - I have an '03 760Li with the 6HP26 E-shift tansmission. One day out of blue my wife reported it moved forward unexpectedly when in park. It then went into limp mode and the 'drive moderately' warning came up on the dash. She turned it off, and it was OK for a while before more errors. There has never been problems with the shifting between gears. New oil/filter/square gasket 30,000 miles ago. I read the codes and there was one error (which had occured four times) which said '4E89 EGS: SV1 / SV2 mechanically jammed implausible signal or value (P1806). Fault currently not present. Fault would not cause warning light to come up. Frequency 4. Kilometers 196,784. I am assuming the MV2 or MV3 have failed and am planning to replace these as shown in your video. Am I on the right track?
I know someone that had this code before, i believe the first thing he did was try the solenoids and reset the shift adapts, i do not believe that worked. Trying to remember, i'm pretty sure he had a bad valvebody and that fixed his issue. You could try the solenoids first because even if you get a used valvebody i would change them anyway, they go bad a lot. Since you cleared the code, has it come back?
I had it fault 4 times before I took the valve body out but didn't reset it and try driving again. I have black and green replacement solenoids here so will try replacing MV2 and MV3 you cover in this video. The car seemed to be in drive when it was started (it surged forward immediately) which is odd because no power is required to any solenoids for the springs to return the gearbox to park (failsafe I guess). I wonder if the error is corect that it must therefore be 'mechanically jammed' in some way to hold it in drive while powered down? I will chech the shift lever and springs as well, reset the shift adapts, replace the two shift solenoids, and let you know how I go.

If there is a ZF supplier in your area, they may be able to figure that out by your vin number or the Stukle number on the side of the trans by the tag, number may begin with either 1068 or 1071 maybe, then read the rest of the number to your ZF suppl;ier
Hi Gary, I have a problem with my 2009 BMW 528i with zf6ph21 e-shift transmission. I've bought this car and it was not starting at all. Previous owner told me that he changed all the valves because the car was shifting from drive to reverse and park by it self. Probably it was because of low pressure. I found that valve body was installed wrong way and shifter was not in park (the fork for park rod was not in piston could not move at all). I fixed it. Now the car starts. But I'm getting a code for solenoid 4 (shift lock) and the message that gears can be changed without pressing the brake pedal. I took valve body out of transmission and ohm all the solenoids. EDS are 5ohm. MV2 8ohm and MV3 22ohm. I know that MV3 is interlock solenoid. When it's not installed I'm getting a code for solenoid 4 (shift lock) and solenoid 3 (interlock). I pull the wire of from MV2 and I still getting a code only for solenoid 4 (shift lock). Is that MV2 defective or maybe is it transmission control module is bad? Thanks.
@@GaryFerraro I found a problem. It was wrong transmission control module. Probably he did swap from other transmission valve body that has no e-shift. And it locks like that module from zf6hp26 transmission because where solenoids are connected there is insulation and it has a round print on it from black solenoid right in the middle like on zf6hp26 when on zf6hp26 all solenoids are colored and making flat prints. I hope I described it well and you understand what I mean. Now I'm trying to find right module.
Hi Gary, i have 2008 Land Rover HSE with 235K miles. The car shifts gears and goes in reverse but does not move in Drive. I have codes P0730,P0735,P0736,P0741 and P0783. I have noticed slight fluid leak from the trans pan as well. Could this issues caused by low fluid or trans failure
@@GaryFerraro ok sounds good. Another strange thing happened is that I switched the drive to sports mode (M/S) and had it in 3rd gear and the truck moved forward. Is that a good sign at all?
Good stuff - thanks for this! Question, you have or know where I can find a main pressure regulator valve for HP26 with the 053 separator plate? (Standard size, not oversize) Mine has some... "scratches", looks like the coating came off. Not "bad", not sure I want to risk using it again. Or, maybe if I vacuum test it, and it's in spec, then ok to reuse despite scratches?
There is a company called Transgo, They sell shift kits and the pressure reg valve is in the shift kit, drop in style not oversized. with that plate code, should be a Gen 1
@@GaryFerraro I actually have their kit and the Sonnax. Per their instructions, the measurements on my valve say I should reuse it. About the only thing I use from their kit is the TCC valve and spring, I think...

Greetings from UK Garry... what.s the resistance on MV3 and MV2 for a 6HP21 ? Is it the same as for 6HP26 ? I bought a new green MV3 with new rod but measures 24.5 ohm nearly same value as the one already on the mechtronic which is 23.9 ohm. Regards
Hi Gary, really good videos from you! Ai would have a question, is it possible to use mechatronics from 6hp21 to 6hp26? The 6hp21 has a electronick park and the 6hp26 has a manual park.
Gary Ferraro, Love your channel. I have a question that maybe you can help you with. Working on a 2005 range rover with the zf5hp24 transmission. When re-installing the transmission should I bolt the torque converter to the flywheel first?
Once the bellhousing is bolted up to the engine, the converter should turn. Do not draw the bellhousing in with bolts, make sure you have dowel pins and that it sits flat against the engine
If MV3 is bad ( it ohm'd @ 26.4) could it cause it to have the parking mechanism stuck internally even though you can select drive and reverse ( but it doesn't move as if you have the break engaged because it feels bound up)??
@@GaryFerraro I have a video.. but NO it actually will select drive or reverse but won't go back into park.. however when I'm neutral it will roll forward with enough RPMs... So I have 2007 bmw 750LI I am replacing the shift solenoids set. Do I have to reset the car with BMW software or I should be fine? The problem with my car is. It won’t shift to any gear and the code is Solenoid B
Hi, this is a very informative channel. I have learned a lot. I have a 2011 bmw f02 750li that I believe comes with this same value body. 1-2 up shift/down shift gear will shutter and lag when the car is cold started but will go away when transmission fluid heats up to operation temperature. I have flushed and changed the transmission fluid and pan/filter. My questions for you is can I just change the solenoid for first and second gear to fix issue? Or should I replace all of them? Would any computer have to be flashed or reprogrammed or is this just a simple swap? And lastly any part numbers for solenoid for this year and model would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The solenoids are cheap enough so just change them all, you will have to reset shift adapts or trans will work the same way. There are about 6 different solenoid kits for this, they go by the color of the solenoids, for instance you may have 3 blue, 3 yellow and 1 black(just an example) this is an E-shift valvebody? that may narrow it down some
Gary Ferraro I changed the valve body and the sleeve. Same issues. I have not changed the solenoid. Not sure if it’s a E valve body but it looked like a piece of rubber with two square holes in it.
@@benwilliams1826 That may be the bridge seal. You reset the shift adapts with a scan tool, there can't be any codes present in the transmission or engine or it may not work.
Hello Gary. First of all, thanks a lot for outstanding videos. Helps immensely. Could you please let me know where do you usually buy spares? Valve body parts, bushings, etc There are lot of noname cheap quality stuff around Thanks in advance

Hi, I changed the solenoids on my bmw 550i recently. Unfortunately, I did something wrong and my car won't go into park. I'm thinking it may have to do with the E-brake. -I didn't use cable ties to hold the lever in place prior to putting it back together. Do you think I would need to realign it with the e-brake lever in a certain location? Also, do the black and green solenoids both help to engage park? I'm thinking I did something wrong with either one of those. When I took the black on out the parts flew out. Maybe I put it back together wrong.. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!
You hooked up the park piston with the linkage? Can you see the park release cable where it goes in to the "J" Bracket, is there a big space in-between the cable and the J bracket. What flew out a spring and valve when you took out the solenoid?
@@GaryFerraro Hi Gary, I reviewed your video again and realized my mistake. When I took out the MV2 solenoid the plastic tube piece came out but I didn't see the spring fly out. 706 is a range switch code, (like a 5088 code) what type of scanner are you using? This may have a problem with the mechatronics(TCM). do you loose the display on the dash at all?
Im in metro Detroit. The shop that has the car is incompetent. They have the valve body out. It's been out for over a month. I told them that it need all new solenoids they keep telling me I need a new valve body.
The 6HP26S in my 2010 X5M keeps losing its mind! One day I can be driving along nicely, one day I can't even get outta my driveway. I've had issues w/ the trans flashing P randomly on my dash, sometimes it'll be fine and I can try the gas and I'll get trans failsafe, I've driven down the highway and it'll jump between gears, I've driven on backroads and it'll wanna force itself into Park or Neutral when doing slow speeds. New Mechatronics sleeve, bridge and sealing tubes. Drain and fill using ZF fluid within the past year. Every code I'm getting says its the transfer case, yet I'll still gets trans failsafe even if the TC is disconnected at the servo motor or fuses are pulled. Please advise before I spend $5k for a rebuild when it could be something minor!!
@@GaryFerraro LONG story short I let a former BMW of Seattle tech buddy do the transmission, diff and TC fluids. Come to find out later he didn't replace the 4 sealing sleeves so I redid the work myself and replaced all 6 seals. It was great for like a week until one night as I was merging onto a sweeping left freeway onramp and it went into TFS. I limped it home, cleared codes and all was fine. Left for work the next day, made a sudden lane change and it went into TFS again, but seeing as it was on lower speed roads, it tried forcing itself into N and/or P repeatedly and was only able to get it to stay in gear by driving with two feet. Today I pulled two fuses I found via a write up online, which made the dash into a Christmas tree of lights but the car drove around fine after sitting for the past 4 days. HARD driving around the block was fine, shifts seemed a little delayed though, but drove and was quite interesting being RWD only with 700+hp. Everything was fine until I took a hard right into my neighborhood and it started doing the slamming into other gears (not P or N, but like 2-4) thing its done in the past, so I two footed it home and parked it once again. I'm losing my mind with this issue. I've got a TH-cam page myself if you wanna see videos. The trans has gotten better in that it doesn't go into TFS while sitting in P in my driveway since having replaced the 4 sealing sleeves, but I still don't fully trust letting my GF and the kids drive it either.
Currently I have a 750i with the m shift valve body.. my transmission is pretty shot now.. how do I tell if another transmission is going to be e shift or m shift? Does it matter for a transmission swap?
The e-shift trans, has a "J" bracket just for park release, while the M shift you should be able to feel the detents moving the linkage. These cannot be interchanged
@@GaryFerraro thanks for the reply, so here's the issue. I am buying the transmission from a place locally and they have the car, is the j bracket something outside of the transmission bell housing? Or internally on the valve body? I'm very familiar with my m shift, but just want to make sure before I buy this transmission if it's going to be e shift or the m shift, did most 750i's come with m shift or was there something to distinguish a difference when it might be an e shift based on Vin or model?
@@gravesent01 To get the correct trans, give them your vin number but heres the thing, this trans has the TCM inside the transmission and it's programmed to your car, if your swapping out transmissions, you have to install your original TCM, Probably early 7 series came with M shift and later E shift, J bracket is outside the trans
Hi Gary. Thanks for taking the time to put the video together. I have this same transmission in my 2010 Range Rover. 130k and not sure if the previous owner ever changed the fluid. I did and it was pretty dirty. I keep getting "gearbox fault", then she locks into 3rd gear. The gear indicator doesn't display until she warms up oncw she gets to around 110 degrees or so.. When in park it flickers that it's in neutral. I have to bypass the shifter to get it into gear. Then once I drive for a bit and she warms up, the "D" flickers on the dash, then eventually stays on, but will still periodically flicker and trigger the fault. I have to keep resetting it with my scan tool. Does this sound like a valve body issue or maybe a solenoid issue? I'm thinking of finding a different valve body and swapping my TCU onto it. Does this sound correct? Any chance you're anywhere near NY? I'd bring her to you in a heartbeat. Thanks and Happy New Year!

@@amana1480 First, did they check the fluid level? A very common problem that can cause these codes is bushing wear, the rear stator bushing wears out and allows E clutch oil to escape causing issues in the higher gears 4th,5th and 6th. Another common issue are the solenoids, they have a high failure rate, does the car drive ok cold?
@@GaryFerraro They did not physically check the fluid level no. They said that if the fluid was low, there would be difficulty engaging reverse. (However, I do get a clunk from the gearbox when I select reverse). They plugged a computer in and checked the gearbox temperature (was 79degrees C). They test drove the car for 30 minutes. The car does slightly better when cold but still has the exact same same symptoms as when warm. 1st, 2nd and 3rd changes are reasonable. 3-4 is very difficult even when using manual. 5th can slip when accelerator is pressed. 6th can slip too on acceleration. There is great difficulty getting from 3-4th gear, even when the manual mode and very minimal acceleration is used. I looked under the car today and I could see what looks like to be a feint spray of oil where the gearbox joins the prop shaft. The gearbox itself is not damp - it seems to be actually coming off the prop shaft at the joint with the gearbox. I'm not sure if this is a gearbox leak? There is never any oil on the pavement.

I now want to overhaul the valve body, I just don't know which one Separator plate I need, I would rather not disassemble everything first to see which plate is in between, my question is what is the most commonly used separat plate With this type of BMW? Then I order a few different sizes. I believe it has an ag6hp26z gearbox underneath. Greetings, Koen The Netherlands
Thanks.
Can you give me the code number?
@@GaryFerraro I found a problem. It was wrong transmission control module. Probably he did swap from other transmission valve body that has no e-shift. And it locks like that module from zf6hp26 transmission because where solenoids are connected there is insulation and it has a round print on it from black solenoid right in the middle like on zf6hp26 when on zf6hp26 all solenoids are colored and making flat prints. I hope I described it well and you understand what I mean. Now I'm trying to find right module.

Greetings from UK Garry... what.s the resistance on MV3 and MV2 for a 6HP21 ? Is it the same as for 6HP26 ? I bought a new green MV3 with new rod but measures 24.5 ohm nearly same value as the one already on the mechtronic which is 23.9 ohm. Regards
Green should be about 24 ohms and the other solenoid about 10 ohms

Gary Ferraro, Love your channel. I have a question that maybe you can help you with. Working on a 2005 range rover with the zf5hp24 transmission. When re-installing the transmission should I bolt the torque converter to the flywheel first?
No, install the converter into the trans first
Gary Ferraro thanks sir. So what’s the best way to line up the bolt holes on the converter and flywheel

Question, have you changed any tires? No trans codes? if you clear the codes do they come right back?

Hi Gary. Thanks for taking the time to put the video together. I have this same transmission in my 2010 Range Rover. 130k and not sure if the previous owner ever changed the fluid. @@GaryFerraro They did not physically check the fluid level no. They said that if the fluid was low, there would be difficulty engaging reverse.
