What is really hampering disaster relief efforts now is the widespread destruction of infrastructure; roads, bridges, electric lines, and cell phone towers. FEMA aide is piling up at airports and collection centers but trucks can't swim, they need roads and bridges, and aide workers need communications to know where the most help is needed. I find it disturbing when people complain about the lack of help without first knowing that the cause of delays is beyond the control of the authorities. I've also said this to some friends who think more helicopters are needed, yes but helicopters also need fuel and they need control to avoid collisions.
