I have to disagree. I don't think the majority of the viewers are vet students, who probably already know this stuff (because they have to), but rather pet owners or people who simply have an interest in these topics. And yes, of course vet nurses. But imho, the people who watch these videos because of their "career" aren't more than half of the viewers, and probably fewer.

Just as the other person pointed out, most of the people seeking help from the internet about how to care for their cats are exactly whose ... people with a feline loved one whose health is compromised due to the issue discussed. Sadly these kinda helpful info are rarely found irl and most vets seem stingy as hell in terms of explaining things well for the carers.

Read this (I would’ve loved this advice when I was first going though this with my cat) This disease is a day to day struggle, while some cats have only one “flare up” ever, there are cats like mine who get flare ups quite often. The preventative measures aren’t curative, there is no cure unfortunately, only measures to control it and prevent constant flare ups but there are days where your cat will be blocked once again. My advice as someone who’s cat has dealt with this for 5 months now is simple: speak to your vet and see if you can get a blood test to determine the underlining cause, because there are multiple causes for this disease: urinary calculi (bladder stones), Bacterial infections, neoplasia (tumour) anatomical abnormalities, urethral plugs (blockage of urethra with of mixture of crystals or small stones and inflammatory material) and while these are reasons that can be prevented easily these issues are usually only presented 30% of the time, the most Likely cause (70%) is idiopathic. Which basically means there is no cause and my cat unfortunately has idiopathic cystitis. Now don’t panic if your cat is idiopathic, because my cat still thrives regardless of having some days of flare ups. Now this is my advice ( what I received from my vet) I use royal canine SO urinary wet food pouches as my cats food (which can be expensive so I’d recommend only feeding your cat this maybe three times a week while substituting the other days with food you usually give him [the raw food diet is the healthiest option in my opinion) I also give half a tablet twice a day of MINIPRESS to my cat (which my vet prescribed to him I’d recommend seeing your vet about the medication to see if it would be a good option) and the last but honestly most effective thing (especially if your cat doesn’t drink enough water everyday) is to get syringes that you’d use in like cough syrup etc and fill them up with water and give them to your cat three times or more a day (don’t over do it cause that can cause vomiting) now other things to look into is making sure you have two litter boxes per cat, making sure they aren’t constantly dirty, changing your cats water bowl once to twice a day and cleaning it! (Metal and ceramic bowls are preferable to kitties) and while I know some cats are picky, dry food shouldn’t be the only thing in your cats diet, they need liquids especially with FLUTD. So wet food, plenty of water bowls etc. you can even give your cat dry food with some water in it. I hope this advice helps cat owners as much as it helps me and honestly while these things give my cat the life he had previously there are days like today where he is struggling and that’s normal unfortunately. (If your cat goes to the toilet and absolutely no pee comes out that is a cause for concern and you should immediately seek vet attention, if your cat urinates a little that means that there is some hope to quickly avert the crisis, i mainly just give him the syringes of water and the half tablet and monitor his urinating and he most of the time gets back on track but there can be instances where he stops peeing altogether and is howling and hissing and crying. Which is terrifying fortunately for me the next day he managed to get over this flare up, however in this case owners who aren’t used to your cat with this disease should also seek vet care. I hope every cat owner with FLUTD can live a stress free life with their kitties

Thank you for this! My own cat has been diagnosed with FIC after various lab tests and such and they have found no underlying causes. He also has flares quite often and sometimes has more bloody urine then usual or unable to urinate. We were given cat Prozac and some pain reliever to give him when he’s really bad. And we have two water systems and he seems to drink water often. We don’t however implement any food other than dry food, which is a vet suggested for him but it’s still dry.
It’s stressful for me because I’m not at home during the year anymore cause I’m off to college and I can’t monitor my boys peeing habits or if he’s having flare ups. My family does there best when im gone but he’s not the only cat and so they don’t watch him that closely plus they have lives. So now that I’m home for the summer im going to try and keep up with his meds and watch him for flare ups and maybe try adding water to his food if he seems to not be drinking enough. I know this is shortening his life span and it upsets me to think of him leaving me before he needs too. Plus I don’t want him to be in pain and cats aren’t known to show when they are in pain. And if they do show discomfort we don’t know how bad it is.

Rub Organic raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the Mother" on their fur (cat's sides) or the top of their paws. They will lick it off. Use at least two tablespoons in a day or if necessary a few days in an emergency for cats. For very young cats reduce that amount to one tablespoon. For kittens use only a teaspoon. Rub the organic apple cider vinegar on each side of their fur or the top of their paws until you see them have relief. Remember to shake the bottle first. If you have a wild cat that doesn’t take orders, then douse him with a good bit in a small glass. A lot will bead of his fur. Also, they will not be able to lick off the entirety of it all at once. Organic apple cider vinegar will start to go into immediate action for the cat to get relief from the blockage. It saved my cat that was pissing blood and then could not pee while squatting all the time. Also, it helps get rid of UTI bacteria; Walmart sells it. Ideally, it is best to use organic apple cider vinegar because it tastes rather good and is much more tolerable for the cat to ingest it compared to the filtered kind which tastes horrible.
Remember only to use the organic apple cider vinegar as necessary. Too much too often could lead to an ulcer. From my experience a couple tablespoons a week has not hurt my cat. If it is a real emergency you could go beyond that just do not let it come to a habit of more than that each week. Keep in mind; you will likely have reoccurring bouts with this for a while. That is why I recommend some other preventative measures as you read on below:
Keep in mind that it is important to ensure cats, when feeling normal, get enough water to keep their system flowing. Ensure they eat wet cat food over dry for the moisture content, Consider temporarily stopping the cat from eating dry food or even permanently if necessary. Too much dry food leads to blockages with lack of hydration compared to canned cat food. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem. Salty meats or salty canned food meats like tuna will stop up your cat for sure!
If you use clay litter make sure you use the unscented. Scented can irritate their pee track with synthetic chemicals leading to inflammation and UTI blockages. Never use clumping litter for cats; it can lead to blockages because cats can ingest it much easier. That can cause ingestion of sludge and bacteria leading to inflammation and UTI’s. Clumping litter is known to be extremely dangerous for kittens and not good for cats in general. Buy only fragrant free non-clumping litter, and then add one heaping tablespoon of baking soda mixed in per 10 pounds of cat litter that you use. It will naturally neutralize the smell; Just do not go beyond that because baking soda is really high in salt which is dangerous for cats if they ingest it more than a tiny amount by licking their paws each time using the litter box. I have used it for my cat and it works well, he actually prefers this litter combination. Baking soda is known to help aid and help get rid of UTI’s. Never give it to your cat other than in the litter! Additionally, use feline pine litter and add it to your litter with several handfuls to add a nice fragrant smell. A little goes a long way to just supplement the litter.
Also, consider buying "cranimals" from amazon. It is a cranberry extract that helps the kidneys and gets rid of UTI problems. Put 1/4 teaspoon in two small cans of wet cat food or equivalent to that with one big can. You can also wash out an old salt and peppershaker to sprinkle a decent amount in their food. Any amount more than that I have noticed they will not eat it. Putting cranimals cranberry powder in their food will help keep their pee acidic to break down crystals.
Additionally, "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" helps assist in UTI treatment sold on Amazon. It is a "diuretic" thus helps people and animals urinate 30% more to empty the bladder to keep crystals from forming. Completely safe for cats with no limitations of consumption and has no salt in it. Cats tolerate it because it has almost no taste. Just be careful not to breathe it in by getting it dusted up in the air because it is dangerous to breathe it in. Make sure to only use "Food Grade."Use at least about 1/4 teaspoon per small can wet cat food. Lastly, I have learned of a brand called "tinkle tonic" from chewy or amazon that some claim helped their cats.
Finally, consider your cat’s stress level. Stress could be another factor that can lead to inflammation of the bladder area. Try to ensure he has enough to do to keep happy.

Thanks! One of our cats got this last Friday. We took him to the vet and they went over just about everything on this video. With the vet stating, "Cats are weird." He also has a cat. We switched up their food, switched up the home to be less stressful, got phermone diffusers, more cats boxes, and he got put on 2 meds. As of today, 6 days later, things have improved. Tonight may be the first night our cat is not sequestered to it's bedroom for the night. But man oh man, this was very stressful and tough to handle during the weekend, with our cats issues of not being able to pee normally. Poor fella.

@@slporter722 hi. I'm sorry to hear that. When our cat Marky was sick, I was so stressed out by it. I just saw your reply. Here goes...
To answer your questions. Yes, it took about 6 days for Marky to be back to normal. As I recall he seemed to be eating normally throughout the entire event. It was unknown how much water he was drinking, for we never seen him drink any water. He had water in a bowl in a different room. And it would go down. But we didn't know if he or his sister, or both of them were drinking from it for the 2 years or so that they had that metal colored water bowl. We only observed his sister drink from it about 2 times over the 2 years.
Marky's most unusual behavior during this time was peeing outside the litter box. He never did that before this. And when he peeed it was sometimes a tiny about, like a few pink colored drops. He would pee on certain parts of the floor, or fabrics on the floor, and at least one time in our bed when it was not made. We got 2 more cat boxes in the next day or so. He had 3 to use. He started using 1 of the three thankfully. When he would pee in there it was still a tiny amount. So we'd have these little clumped balls of liter. By day 6, these were now much bigger and shapped like a small potato skin, in the litter.
We also had 3 Feliway diffuses to help calm him. And we seriously though on ways to destress the home, to make things calmer for Marky. I would sweep, instead of vacuuming. Or if I needed to vacuum, then I'd move Marky to a different room and close the door.
We also got a new motorized water bowl, that had running water. Marky was soon, I think by Monday (we took him in on Friday and got the diagnosis), was when we observed him drinking from it!
On Friday that he got seen and diagnosed, he got a shot of Subutext for the pain (that was one high kitty). And he was give another med to relax him, Gabby-something twice a day. This also made him sleep a lot more, and made him very mellow. It wasn't until Monday that we got the medicine (Prazosin) to help his bladder.
All of the above he responded favorably and was back to normal by day 6. Except for his pee in the cat box about about 1/3~1/2 it's normal volume. But a big imrpovement from when it was drops. Also he was consistently using 1 of the 3 cat boxes. And not using them a million times each day. Normally it's the size of about an egg when clumped.

Volt Ron thank you for responding. I am very stressed not getting any real diagnosis other than a UTI from the emergency room. I took him back to ER again. Started him on another antibiotics and pain med. The thing with my cat is he doesn’t have any issues going in his litter box or at least I haven’t see it. Cats can be very secretive. His symptoms were not eating and lethargic with fever and then labs showed a UTI. I’m so stressed plus I have another cat who may be having a chronic condition. This is all costing a lot of money too.
Thank you again for providing your experiences. This is day 4 for my cat.

@@slporter722 You are welcome. Our cats are like our kids, eh? So much joy when things are going well. So much stress when they are not. I was trimming Cleo's nails last Sunday and accidentally cut too close to the pink, and caused a tiny bit of bleeding. I used some styptic powder to help it. Thankfully it stopped.
With Marky, I was sure what was wrong. I just assumed it was something with his urinary tract. So I assumed it was a UTI. When I called up the place we took them to for fleas and a check up last year, the person on the phone cautioned me that since Marky is a male, that I should get him looked at ASAP. Just in case it was a blockage that was preventing him being able to pee. For in some cases that could be fatal. OMG - did that start the emergency bells ringing for me. The soonest appointment I could schedule with them was for the next day. I asked to be called back if something opened up. But headed to the Vet ER nearby just to be safe. Thankfully they were able to do a quick examination, for blockage in his urinary tract/kidneys. I assume it's something the attendee simply feels the cat for an abnormal structure, using their hands. Within a few minutes they came back telling me that at least it's not a blockage and Marky was safe against that. Then my regular vet called with an opening and we took off for that. Otherwise it would have been a several hour wait at the Vet ER.
At the Vet they did the above, in my previous reply. But I don't think they did any blood work. I'm having trouble remembering. I think the vet instructed us with a "Let's go with this treatment for what I suspect he has. If he does not improve within a week, then bring him back." The vet also said to contact him with any quetsions.
So I emailed him with updates and questions. I was so nervous. But I figured that my communication would help calm me down as well as possibly raise any red flags. Main follow up advice was to try moving the cat boxes around. Eventually when everything settled down and returned to normal (mostly) we settled on using just 2 cat boxes. Originally they shared 1 cat box for almost 2.5 years without any issues. They are brother and sister. Briefly we went to 3 cats boxes. But then went back to 2 cat boxes.
With going to the ER again, at least your cat got checked out. The UTI sounds annoying and stressful. If it was something more serious then they would have caught that. For now just run the course of antibiotics. Maybe figure out ways to de-stress your cats environment. I know, easier said then done. Like that cat poster with the cat holding on to the tree limb, "Hang in there!"
Feel free to contact me xii.volt@gmail.com - I'll edit this out in a bit.

Thank you very much for this video, Doc!
I have 13 cats and one of them (Graye) have the FIC symptoms (started peeing blood, had trouble peeing, bloody droplets trailing after him, licking there). I suspect that he’s stressed that we are forcing our only outdoor cat inside (Ponkan bit a neighbor so we had to lock him up indoors but he’s not friends with everyone). Ponkan has been indoors for 14 days now but Graye’s FIC symptoms only started showing less than a week.
Graye behaves normally except for the peeing which is why it took us this long. My mom suggested we keep Ponkan locked up in the dogs’ cage outside during the day (the dogs are let loose) instead and only let off at night (when neighbors are shut up in their homes).
As for Graye, we will be observing him for a few days with encouragement on drinking more water. If he does not get better or behaves strangely, we will be taking him to the vet.
Thank you again so much, Doc, for this vid, and thank you to the other pet owners for their comments.

Hey guys, I took my cat off tap water and he recovered. I believe it was the minerals in the hard water that were causing this. Even though the vet said that tap water can’t cause it and there were no blockages on his x-ray.
When I was at the vet I asked about the water and he said no. He said stress causes it. I literally looked it up on my phone as he took the cat to examine him and within seconds, found tons of evidence that cats who drink tap water in hard water areas are much more prone to cystitis.
He said to give him stress drops. The stress drops did NOTHING. He only was healed after I changed the water. He is still stressed out as he and my other cat fight all the time. He hasn’t had an episode and has miraculously recovered after I switched to the distilled water.
It must be distilled water. Animals cannot process the chlorine, fluoride or minerals in spring, tap, most bottled water. And refrigerator filters do not filter out chlorine and fluoride. The screw on tap filters do nothing to filter out the chlorine and fluoride either. Many of the pitcher filters do not either.
You can get it from any store or have it delivered. The water must read “000” or as close to it as possible. And also I gave the neighbor’s dog only distilled water when they were out of town to work with her and she made a 50% recovery in 6 days! She had osteoarthritis and couldn’t even lay down on her bed properly. It took her like 20 seconds just to sit and she groaned in pain. She is so much more agile and up and trotting around.
It says it will take 7-60 days for animals to recover from chlorine and fluoride or mineral toxicity. It is causing arthritis and cancer in animals. Not just that, it’s causing so many other issues with the pets I was pet sitting for. Lipomas, paw issues, skin issues, brain issues, unexplained health issues. You name it, tap and hard tap water were killing the animals I know and love. I started drinking it too and feel much better this week. Good luck with this guys!

We had one of our cats had to be put to sleep this week because they had the urinary obstruction issue and we hoped we caught it early. But our boy refused to eat (not taking his medicine as a result) and seemed to be only drinking by syringe. It could have been FIC though, because our other cat (who we've had longer) was something of an alpha male who probably stressed our boy out. It was hard to watch him suffer, I wish we could find a way to solve the other issue. It's an unbearable situation that I don't want any other cat owner to ever suffer again.

Most of the time he pees in the boxes but sometimes he goes on the sofa, the rugs, and if bags or plastic is left on the floor, he will pee on those. Not much, just dribbles but still. The reason cats stop using the box when they have FIC is that they are associating the litter box with the pain and the problem of peeing. They think that if they go somewhere else, it will help. I have tried stress spray, stress drops, and MSM. *sigh* still trying to find something that works.

I got to wear though he wanted outside all the time it would beg and of course we don't give in but it still gives him stress I believe . then The other day he actually encountered another cat in the backyard and they had a hissing match before I could chase the cat off and bring mine back inside and ever since mine's been stressed out. He just started doing this yesterday morning and he literally goes to the litter box every 10 to 15 minutes. And barely anything comes out. I'm thinking his has to be stress induced. I don't know what to do I thought letting him go outside for small periods during the day was good for him but it seems to just to stress him more. Did you ever find a solution for yours ? Best diet for a cat is actual real meat make sure you include tripe which is the stomach of an animal and you can feed them eggs for omega-3 and vitamin D the skin has vitamin A and the bone has calcium and vitamin D the tribe has almost all the vitamins the cat needs this helps eliminate a lot of medical problems in cats

@@dreamyvenustheminer8184 Well, I'm back on this video because it came back. While she got along for a while with the other cat, when he became a full adult, she started showing signs again and I noticed she was being chased too much but him. I just rehomed him and hoping it gets better. She's not wanting to eat her regular food nor much tuna with ACV. She's so happy without him but still suffering. Guess just have to keep trying. She has no fever so I don't think it is bacterial.

This video is awesome! And considering we do have Turkish rugs all over the house AND my husband is Turkish I almost spit out my drink at you talked about the cat pissing on the Turkish rug 🤣 On a side note, my 4 year old female cat is acting like her normal bitchy self, other than peeing drops every few minutes in her litter box. It’s confusing because other than that she doesn’t seem to be in pain. I will definitely take her to the vet.

I went to the vet with her, did all the exams(blood, scans, urine), they've given her antibiotics 4 times now(4 treatments), anti-inflammatory and none of them worked. Because all the tests were good and the cat acts the same as before, she doesn't look stressed, she isn't shy, they said that most probably she has cystitis and they gave me "cystaid" to give her for 2 weeks. I finished this supplement and she still pees blood. I tried to increase the water consumption with a water fountain, but they don't use it. Also, I started to give them more wet food. I’m really upset that I could lose him after having him since he was a baby kitten a year ago.
A neighbor suggested switching from all wet food to a mix of dry/ wet which we began two weeks ago. Never any issues with his health until now, and I’m upset about it. I was told that this could be life-threatening.
