The thing with native speakers of any language is that they know which words can be butchered in which ways and still be understood. This gives a lot more leeway for accents and dialects to form, which native speakers (At least generally) can still understand. Meanwhile non-native speakers don't have this luxury, so they have to be extra careful with how they use the language to be understood properly.
Thus it's not entirely too unusual for foreigns to have a better theoretical grasp of a language compared to the native speakers as the native speakers don't need to study the language to use it and still be understood.

As a Swede, i don't regret that my country supported North Vietnam. No Swedes regrets it, because we don't even bring it up, and when we do, we just laugh it of and starts drinking some coffee and then we go out for some fika.
Fika is a word that can't be translated into other languages, because it's too Swedish. It's literally what we do though. We just sit down, laughs about the USA losing the Vietnam war over a cup of coffee and while eating a cookie. You should try it, but i doubt it will ever become a big thing outside of Sweden. There's a few places in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, but those places are few and far between.
I do like the fact that while Sweden at the time was an ally of the USA, we literally just said "let's try helping the communists a bit in Vietnam." Everyone else was so shocked and horrified that they weren't able to say anything. We Swedes are rebellious, get over it, or something. Do as you please.
