  • This video is an outtake from David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, an award-winning documentary by filmmaker Bruno Wollheim. Watch the full film here: vimeo.com/2248...
    The picnic scene sums up the rigorous domestic organization and routine that went hand-in-hand with a busy schedule of outdoor summer painting. David is intensely practical and down-to-earth, not one to lose an hour in the car going home for lunch. The 4x4 had been adapted into a painting machine, with shelves to accommodate the wet 3x4’ canvases and the paint palette trays.
    Mostly David was trying to finish a canvas that some day, because of the changeable English light and weather. That wasn’t always possible so David might find himself working on several paintings at once, ready to be continued at particular times of days or in particular weather conditions. And because conditions and light were almost never identical, he became adept at making swift alterations, as here in this view of Woldgate in high summer.
    Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood - outside, in all weathers, through the seasons - culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
    “This wonderful film … will be of lasting importance for future generations who want to understand Hockney’s art.” Saturday Review, BBC Radio 4
    “Bruno Wollheim’s portrait of this forthright magus is an unqualified, life-enhancing joy from start to finish.” - The Sunday Times
    “This film may well be the best anyone will ever make about Hockney’s process.” - The Times, London.
    “As gently hypnotic and fulfilling as one of Hockney’s own works.” - Time Out
    “This impressive documentary is almost cinematic in its scope… both majestic and intimate” - The Observer

    Thanks will check it out. David Hockey is my favorite artist. He was classically trained in London, has his own style, worked consistently, is internationaly acclaimed and he is open to sharing his work.

      I'm not sure if I agree with the "classically trained" because his early work embraced modernism, albeit in a rather ironic way, and quite quickly moved away from English Academicism, but certainly drawing has always been central. Otherwise I agree with you, especially his approachability, something which has often been used against him.

    Traditional art and drawing, known as classical in England.

    • @colugapictures7529
      @colugapictures7529  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, certainly David attributes a lot to his early traditional art training at Bradford School of Art, a form of training that was little practised at the RCA and getting dismantled during the 70s when he and Kitaj led a public campaign against the trend - as David put it, "forward to the drawing board!"
