Hi Joe. Here to show support by watching and re-watching as many old videos as I can in the background whilst I do other things. I'll like and comment on as many as I can get to. Hope your healing journey is quick and smooth and you can soon be back to doing what you love!
Now THIS is what I like! Camping and hunting for your food! Excellent video. Wish more survivalist types would go about their excursions like this. Job well done Joe & team! (oh, and that bacon wrapped porcupine looked DELISH!)
Love your videos Joe and was excited to see that you had this video from where I’m from. But.....was hoping for a longer video like all your other videos lol
Enjoyed the video. I was taught about porcupines by the rifle instructor at the BSA camp in central lower Michigan where I was scoutcraft director. He called them the woodsman's survival kit: slow enough when they are on the ground that you can club them with a stick to get food. He had taken one in the woods behind the rifle range and had cooked it in his pressure cooker. He wouldn't tell me what it was until I tried some. Tasted like pot roast the way he cooked it. Very good. Lived in the central U.P. for about 15 years, so I know what you mean about how everything looks the same in the woods when draped in snow. Makes for great XC skiing and snowshoeing adventures.
The fact that you guys are considerate enough to specify the diffence between farenheit and celsius is awesome, thank you. it give additional info when considering gear and temp ratings.
Ya, some guys put those small stoves in, In my opinion, you can get away with it if you are the only one sleeping in the tent, I dont think it would be big enough for 2 people plus the stove, although they make the shangrila in a larger size, I think its called the 5.
Been following your channel for a while Joe. Really enjoyed this video. I live in the northern part of the lower peninsula. Just landed a jet sled and snow shoes for Christmas. Going to do some winter bushcraft soon
Fabulous vid! Thanks for taking us along. I'm a dyed in the wool hammock camper, but have been eyeballing that Shangrila 3 for some time. I saw somewhere a fella that pimped his out with a tiny wood burning stove. Cheers from Montreal
Lived up there for years and loved it. I did a nine day hike on the superior trail (past picture rock) and I put it down as one of the best hikes i have done to date.
I just watched this video of yours for the first time. I think that Ken also did a youtube video of this trip that I watched some time ago. I live in the central part of the U.P. Bob
Nice video! I was born and raised in a little town on the shore of lake superior in the middle of the U.P. If you don't know what people from the U.P. are called, we are called "YOOPERS."
Awesome video, just like all the rest. :) What kind of rifle is that? A .22? I'm not very gun savvy in regards to makes/models, but this looks like a gun I might like to have. Thanks.
What kind of knife were you using to strike the ferro rod @ 6:45? When I go cold weather camping I generally prefer one of two different setups. If i'm going to cut enough firewood to keep a big fire or a long fire going all night I really like to use either a basic lean to with the ends mostly blocked off or a Forester tent setup to take advantage of the fire's heat. (That means either a canvas or an oil cloth tarp. SilNy tarps don't survive that type of use for very long without getting holes burned into them.) If, on the other hand, I'm camping like you guys did here with just a small fire I want an actual tent! That's mostly so that I have a dry place with no snow where I can change clothes & air out my sleeping bag without having to worry about it getting wet from snow. I'm a big fan of the 2-man Eureka Timberlite. I've used one for more than a decade now, and it still looks brand new. I've had this tent setup in a storm than bent over an aluminum flag pole and another storm that dumped well over a foot of snow in one night, and it's never let me down. It weighs a little more than just a SilNy tarp & a ground cloth, but it's worth it!
josephallen19 OK, I am now officially JEALOUS! Not only do I lust after Adventure Sworn knifes in general, but the Explorer model is my favorite in the whole line. What I wouldn't give for an Explorer with a 5" blade, Scandi grind, mosaic pins/lanyard loop and blue & gold died elder burl scales! Unfortunately the fact that he's no longer taking custom orders (not to mention a price tag in the $400-$500 range) means I'll probably never get one, dammit. :(
Hey there joe. Where about did you end up camping at? I work by the bridge and when I saw you film it I was kinda stoked. Love your videos man! I’ve been bingeing for about two weeks now. Keep up the great work!
OMG camping out in that horrible whit stuff, using a tarp and sleeping on the ground, Sooner you than me!!! as for that porcupine I have never tasted that before, what does it taste like any thing like chicken or pork?
+JoeRobinetBushcraft I was surprised, it's the first time I've seen a firearm in any of your videos (and considering you were in the US that made me happy) but then when it shot I could've sworn that was an air rifle lol
We don't believe in snow plows, hahaha. We don't believe in decent winter driving either. Everyone here drives like it's the first time they've ever seen snow.
Why wouldn't you hang? I've hammocked I'm both the UP and Mitton when it was below 0°f. Just have to prep for it but it beats the pants off going to ground.
Not worried about it anymore. Met him on a winter meet. It's actually the "Winter Camping In Michigan." video. I'm on the left in the big black parka, jeans, and grey hat of the thumb nail.
Sorry bro, really love your stuff but its kind of a bummer to see the taking of a life so needlessly. Not trying to be a jerk about it, hunted my whole life. Just hate to see something die for no real reason.
What a hypocrite ! He hunted all his life (NEEDLESSLY) & he points the finger at you for killing dinner. You`re always eating oatmeal & dehydrated food. That's as bad as people crying you`re not killing your fish, you let them suffocate. People got a problem with iit, DON`T WATCH IT !
...Eating habits around the world vary. In Pennsylvania, for example, it is still legal to eat cats and dogs. It's the custom in China, Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia. ...People eat rats in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, parts of the Philippines and Indonesia,Thailand, Ghana, China and Vietnam. ....Hungry people will eat anything. ...There are still countries where eating people is practiced: Papua New Guinea; Fiji; India; the Congo; Cambodia; French Polynesia; Liberia; and Germany---cannibalism is not a crime in Germany. You will be arrested only for murder. ...What people eat is determined by need and culture. Nature doesn't care. Next time you chance to be in one of the cannibal countries ask for Leg of Man. I hear it's done quite tasty with fava beans and a nice chianti.
Love watching your older winter camping ones when it’s almost winter this is one of my favs
for sure man, glad you enjoyed it...I gotta get up to the Adirondacks one day, we would have a blast!
Awesome video love winter camping backpacking wish I could try in Canada be great looks like u had blast ty be safe

Great video Joe! Man that looked like fun. I like your sleeping setup. Keep'em coming

Random Button Pusher I love Northern Michigan, the bacon certainly helped with the porqupine.
Thanks, it was my buddies old Remington 22

matthew thompson thanks!

Excellent video, i really like the way the pots were hung over the fire with (i assume) paracord, but adjustable ! ingenious
Lived up there for years and loved it. I did a nine day hike on the superior trail (past picture rock) and I put it down as one of the best hikes i have done to date.
thanks, the ppine was just fine!
Fantastic video, I can't wait to winter camp in MI this year ;)-
I was using a cheap one from Crappy Tire, the brand is "Pelican"
I just punched some holes to weave my paracord in and out of.
Just Birchbark and Balsam Fir twigs, lit with a match.
Thanks for taking us along to that nice winter hike. It was nice to see that ShangriLa 3 tent. I have one myself and love it!
should have another video up in a couple days, just me using an axe in the winter woods..thanks
god I love Michigan! by far the best state I've been in!
did that tree make you mad joe, kidding bro. thanks for sharing your great times and i am sure the birds enjoyed you guys being there.
...bill
The bird eating out of the guys hand.. Wayyyy Cool
that looked like a good outing. lots of fun
Thanks for sharing Joe! Love that golite Shelter!
Great upload! Thanks :-) Wish we had snow like that in Denmark.
thank you Joe!
Yup, totally aware of that, I call it that as well, but not everyone knows that, hence naming it what I did,
You should get the soft squeeze bottles for sauces and condiments. They pack flat or rolled in a tube after use and they're refillable
I just watched this video of yours for the first time. I think that Ken also did a youtube video of this trip that I watched some time ago. I live in the central part of the U.P. Bob
Awesome trip! Glad you guys use serious sleep systems.
Reminded me of my boy scout polar bear trip but with much better gear. We were given a tarp and told to make a shelter.
Nice video! I was born and raised in a little town on the shore of lake superior in the middle of the U.P. If you don't know what people from the U.P. are called, we are called "YOOPERS."
Great video and a great set up. I love the Shangri-La 3.
Get well soon, Joe. 👍
*insert American Pie quote here*
You got yourself a Sub on this one! Keep up the good work man!

Not sure; but I think is a Bark River.. Good expensive knife!!
The knife is an Adventure Sworn explorer

Joe...thoroughly enjoying your vids. Have you ever become disoriented and had difficulty finding your back to camp (or road/car, etc.)?
Do the modern snow shoes seem to work that much better than traditional ones?
seattwa I think so, but others may have different opinions...can't go wrong with either.
Do you guys hang your food for bear protection?
bear are usually hibernating that during the winter up here
yes, its good practice regardless
Great stuff Joe!
Going back through some of your older vid's and hit Kyle & Joe Dumb Dumb moments! HA!! Now there would be a video!! ;)

OMG camping out in that horrible whit stuff, using a tarp and sleeping on the ground, Sooner you than me!!! as for that porcupine I have never tasted that before, what does it taste like any thing like chicken or pork?
Do you live in Michigan, or just visiting?

where did you get the .22 ammo
Ahhh. Michigan. My favorite state.
cool video bro. what is the gun u are using.
were those air rifles you used to shoot that porcupine?
+Lex Olson no, I kno it sounded odd, it was a .22
+JoeRobinetBushcraft I was surprised, it's the first time I've seen a firearm in any of your videos (and considering you were in the US that made me happy) but then when it shot I could've sworn that was an air rifle lol

I figured that was only something that my fellow trolls did down here in the LP. lol It's really bad the first few snows!
I've a Benjamin Grizzly X2, both .177 @ 1000 and .22 @ 800fps!
Why wouldn't you hang? I've hammocked I'm both the UP and Mitton when it was below 0°f. Just have to prep for it but it beats the pants off going to ground.
I prefer the ground, to each his own.
Great video bud. I'd love to try some porcupine bacon 8)
How did you learn about this trip? I'd love to do this in two years (when I have winter gear) but I'm not doing it alone.
TheRebelEye My buddy in the U.P did the research for the trip.
One of these days in a couple years.
TheRebelEye it has been a couple of years
Not worried about it anymore. Met him on a winter meet. It's actually the "Winter Camping In Michigan." video. I'm on the left in the big black parka, jeans, and grey hat of the thumb nail.
What part of the U.P. was this?
Here from "Semi-Permanent Winter Camp in Woods" Part 3
I,m also a potawatomi Indian good luck guys!@
