Great work! It is inspiring that you work a bit roughly with some basic tools, but it is so refreshing from the Lie Nielsen / Festool - gang with all the extreme expensive gear. This is authentic! Keep it up!
One of my favourite parts of this video was watching you pare away the wood on the splines with a sharp chisel...heaven! The bench looks amazing and I love the joinery involved. Concerning the mistakes that were made a wise man once told me to "embrace the suck".
What a great looking bench, the build! Your 'errors' actually took you down a path of great resolve in the end! The gap can be used for all kinds of things!
Nice bench. The only bobo I saw was the way you pared the mortis holes. Use a guide block to keep the chisel from cutting in to deep to your line. Congrads on the little one.

Have three saws now (very fine, fine and rough), but missing that middle ground of speed and acceptable results in general house projects.

I noticed with your first bench idea that if you had an azebiki you might have been able to make the cuts you were going for a little easier, albeit maybe more slowly. Do you have an azebiki? My apartment neighbors would not have appreciated the volume of power tools and the management had an issue with it. Hence why when I lived in the apartment when I made this video I used hand tools for everything. Power tools are my best friends lol

I thought you were making a split top saw bench at first. Build it slightly different and it could easily serve the purpose.
It could be that. I'd prefer a purpose built one but it does resemble that design a bit.
how do you square off your parts, it's never shown, or is it not an issue in the type of project?
With a Japanese planing board all you do is just lay your piece flat against the stop and go at it
What happened to this build?
I love the sound & sheen on the work and shaving you only get from a kanna plane. Saves having to sand afterwards!

I live red cedar. Is it the same as Spanish cedar? I have carved spanish cedar.
It's quite a bit different than Spanish cedar. Workability is about the same but grain and figure are completely different along with the smell.
Damn yo! Those chisels are sharp! Like for real my homey! ... what grit does one sharpen to? If I may be so bold as to enquire? .... sike!
