Hi Mick, good job on highlighting Marian Beattie's brutal, sickening murder. Nice poster at the end. R.I.P. Marian Beattie - she and her family have been terribly neglected. Sounds like the issue with this case was that it was possibly solved even before they took information from Marian's brother and did a photofit of somebody else. That investigation beggars belief - there was a wealth of forensic evidence and then 52 missing items lost. Even though he seemed genuinely disgusted, it's ironic what the senior detective said about clearing this up in two weeks - it was certainly cleared up for her killer and those allegedly protecting him. Can't believe they grouped this as "legacy". Ironic as well that that legacy bill was probably the only time that people in the North pretty much across the board agreed on not wanting it and the conservatives forced it in anyway.
Very sad case, hope Marian's family get answers and something gives to get justice for her and her family. R.I.P. All the best, Brian.

I hope so, too, Brian. It does not deserve to be a 'legacy' case and I suspect was lumped in that category because deep down the investigation team knew the real prime suspect had connections to the security forces at the time and later.

Given that it was only yesterday, 19th April 2024 (edited for the correct date), that the verdict of the inquest into the Stardust disaster, in which 48 young people and teens were horrifically killed on the 14th February 1981, was announced. The families had been tireless for 43 years to get some sort of answer, while the powers that be just ignored it. They allowed the (wealthy) owner of the dance hall get away with manslaughter because he didn’t want to pay for extra door staff and just had/allowed the fire exits to be padlocked.
The treatment, particularly of young working class people on the whole of this island in the recent past was nothing short of disgraceful.
As Susan McKay alluded to, a young working class (Catholic) girl meant little to the RUC at this time, if the fact the “Romper Room”
Actrocities were allowed to go on for so long.

Marian was my mothers first cousin. It absolutely devastated the family and never having resolution has prolonged their suffering. My mother always said it was a British soldier but since he had long hair I do not think this was the case. My mother and several of her siblings left the North because of intimidation and threats. I was born in Armagh but left as a baby, I often visited over the years and got to experience searches, bomb scares and having guns pointed at me. People from the Republic have no idea how bad it was up there. Thankfully it's a lovely place now but the scars are deep and people still protect their own so I do not hold out much hope that Marian's killer will be brought to justice. The Frances Beatty she is buried with is her Grandfather and my great grandfather. I only met her as a baby so I don't remember her but my mother always said she was a really sweet girl who was too innocent to know the evil she met that night.

@@deirdredowling137 if you want to be annoyed at me, work away.
Whether we are living under a rock, in an echo chamber or going through life with blinkers on, really has no bearing on the horrific taking of a young woman’s life. Nor the psychological torture her family and friends have been put through over 50 years.

@@maireadnic8280 don’t need to be living up north. My mother passed away 2 years ago. My biological father beating her for years. No one would listen because his best mate was a Sargent in police. He Beth me to a pulp also. When I turned 17 court of law then to voice. Them to would pretend to be alcoholics so then the women where week. Rape them. I fought for my mother and myself. He got a 200 pound fine. Back in the 90’s. I told the judge he was dangerous. Didn’t listen. Then he targets another woman with her son.

The fact the murderer had long hair suggests he wasn’t in the Army, or public-facing in the RUC.
The deliberate hindering of the investigation suggests some connection to either the RUC (undercover officer?), or one of the loyalist provos.
Or, possibly, there were more than one murderer. The fact there were so many matches makes me wonder if even the most agressive chainsmoker

Cold cases horrific. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️then all blaming each other. Unfortunately the killer/ killers get away,🤦‍♀️then years later gets worse. Witnesses die or area changes 🤦‍♀️x💚🇮🇪☘️

Absolutely, Deirdre. This is also the major problem with lengthy cold cases, not just the passing of time... but the passing of key initial investigators, suspects, witnesses and family members. It leaves it so much harder to get to the truth without forensic DNA advances or an outright admission of guilt by a suspect.
