  • The Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday fired head coach J.B. Bickerstaff following a 48-34 season and second-round loss to the Boston Celtics.
Bickerstaff coached the Cavs for four-plus seasons, going from 22 victories in 2020-21 to 51 last season and 48 this season, good for the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Despite that improvement, Bickerstaff fell out of favor with players, according to reports by The Athletic and Cleveland.com.
Bickerstaff, 45, was 170-159 and made the playoffs twice during his time with the Cavaliers. He joined the Cavs as an associate head coach under John Beilein in 2019 and took over for Beilein later in the 2019-20 season. The Cavs made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons without LeBron James on the roster for the first time since 1995 and 1996.

mobley not being the focal point and trying to get him more involved is a fireable offense. losing the lockerroom after multiple disappointing season ending finishes also.

JB was fired for failing to develop Mobley's offensive game and not developing an overall stronger offensive attack for the Cavs. I couldn't understand the Cavs not playing Emoni Bates this season.

    Bickerstaff relied on failed gimmicks.
Probably the worst coach in the league.

Jb is a good regular season coach.. a good man who can get young guys motivated and that’s a talent in itself…
That said, he gets out coached in the playoffs and that’s where his ceiling is right now..
He will develop more over the years but the Cavs have a winning window right now and he just didn’t fit through it
ALSO.. the conversation shouldn’t be about garland or Mitchell in the back court, it should be about Allen and Mobley in the front court.. love Allen but we know his ceiling, Mobley’s is wayyy higher

He’s not a good motivator. He lost the locker room, did not develop Garland or Mobley. Berated his players. Had weak practices. Was a terrible 2nd half coach

The Cavs should interview three people. Mark Jackson, Sam Cassell, Becky Hammon.

Baloney, coaches are always the scapegoat as they're easy to fire. None of you turkeys talk about pink slipping Altman because you don't want to be blacklisted. It's doubtful that modern NBA coaches actually have any authority, but are glorified cheerleaders or motivational speakers. Cavs management has an extensive record of subpar lotto picks, overpaying players and questionable trades. Do you really think a new coach will take the team to the finals next year? When?

The cavs were the best team in the NBA during that stretch where they won seventeen out of eighteen games without garland. They were beating the best teams and holding them to under a hundred points. No one would have wanted to play them at that time. Garland returned, and j b played him 30+ minutes and the cavs returned to mediocrity. That is all on j b.
The fact that they played so well tells me that they have the players to get to the finals. There's no need to make a major overhaul. The new coach has to be a no-nonsense coach. No favorites just the best combination of players to win basketball games.

bad take. Thats explicitly JB's fault for overplaying players. and always getting outreached with the high level talent we got here. Dont blame Koby and front office when JB was being damn stubborn and being all 1960s about things, when the talent succeeded despite him and his backward coaching mentality. Plus, Koby wasnt going to fire himself...eoither if you wanna keep this team going, JB was never the best choice going forwsrd--and you know that. JB is a starter coach who got to stay longer than he shouldve due to being Koby's boy.

@@DJ_BROBOT got me wrong, bro. Team was winning with Garland, Mobley and Mitchell out. They were playing team ball. Do you really think JB could've let it be and put those starters on the bench? JB is no Mike Malone, but the organization is incompetent all the way to the top.

They all was talking about Altman being fired last week. Guessed you missed that part

    • @topherick

Do you actually watch the games? If so do you honestly feel like JB is a great tactician? That he has maximized his rotations? The development of the young guys? Does the team look competent out of time outs? If you answered yes to all these then fair enough but most people wouldn’t. I don’t think JB is at fault for everything but I do think it was time to find a new voice and a new way of doing things.
If JB is the guy you think he is then he will have another head coaching job instantly.
