It is very possible that women on average do not respect weak men. They will not stay with a weak man. I am sure many a marriage was saved back then because the husband brought his wife in line. With a divorce rate at 50 percent right now, much of that is due to the emasculation of the man's role in society and his own family.

When you're in control of a situation, you don't need violence to get your way. If I ever felt that I needed to hit a woman to get her to do what I wanted, that would mean I dropped the ball long before that.
I knew a man who felt it improper for another man to stick his nose in his business. As fate would have it I also witnessed this same man beaten, his heels placed on the curb and his opponent stomp and break both of his legs below the knees. Later in hospital this same man asked me why I stood by and did nothing to help him. I told him that karma is a bitch and perhaps now he knew how his old lady felt when he beat her. Men of violence ARE ALL "PUNKS" and mark my words, karma is a bitch.
Tell ya what. Don't mind your own business, and step in and tell an HA husband how to not treat his wife. Hunter did and stepped over the line and got his a$$ beat. (Support your local Hells Angels)
First time seeing this and as a fan of HST it's interesting to see him in the flesh in such a circumstance. He was clearly an intelligent guy with sound principles. That said, he should have probably gone back and had a few beers with them after the incident.
Ive read alot of biographys while i was in prison. It became interesting when id read a hunter S T biography then i read a sonny berger (founder or pres. Or something of hells angels) biography that both mentioned certain events from different POV's. And the electric acid cool aid test i think had some dealings with HTS.....it just became cool ovce id read so many that the characters all overlapped. There was timoty leary also and jerry garcia and slash.....alot of em begam to overlap
I've seen some photographs of HST after the beating, he was pretty "smashed", if you will, his face was swollen in a really bad shape and, after all, the so called "fair fight" is not a concept that belongs to so tight-knit groups as mororcycle clubs so, he got four of them against him. Considering that, I don't know if it's easy for a man to simply forgive such stomping and just have a few beers with his "executioners" aftewards acting like nothing had happened. Much more if the man who got the beat thought he was right since the beginning. And, mostly, since from that very moment, it seems to me that any shade of ilusion or enchantment that HST could have about the HA just broke down, as he realised that his principles and theirs would always clash. So, probably the best way to go was just to walk away without looking back again. I also think that the situation that occured to HST is, somehow, similar to what happened to several artists, writers and intelectuals of the sixties. I mean, they belived that bikers (not just Angels) were kind of a "frontline" of the counter culture. It was a understandable mistake to commit back then since bikers were kind of the "ultimate free souls" and hippies shared with them some aesthetic clues, behavioral aspects and tastes. But once that those artists, writers and intelectuals could tell the differences that put the biker world apart of the hippie/counter culture world, each one followed their separed paths. In short, what happened in Altamont was, to the eye of the big public, what happened before, in an other scale, to HST, a clash between social and demographic groups that shared some superficial aspects and the same zeitgeist, but were different on their respectives core values. Hope this help to clarify some key elements of that rich and exciting Era. Peace from Brazil to everyone. ✌

This is sad. The audience laughs at Hunter as “guilt by association, if you associate with these unredeemable types, you deserve whatever you get.” But he probably saved the woman’s life, by distracting away from her beating and it’s probably one of the best things he ever did for anyone, and certainly establishes that he was a real man, and that the angels were cowards, no matter how big a pack they ran in, and that that’s why cowards run in a pack.

The book did make the rounds. I had to look and yes it is in my local library, my favorite Thompson book. I liked his shorter stories a good bit.
That was hilarious! The Hells Angel was right! That was normal for them at that time. It gives you an insight into proper etiquette among people who are drunks and bullies. I'm surprised that Hunter was less than conciliatory with him on the show. But dealing with bullies is tricky. How you handle yourself in these situations is what they look for. They don't mind crazy, they don't mind publicity, but they constantly test to see if you are a stand up guy or a punk. Hunter should set up a meeting with them and just bring the beer. Send the books by mail later. But make peace with them. What he said about them in the book wasn't flattering, and after a few beers, they may have hard questions to ask him.
Yeah. Plants. Hunter did okay, just went about it the wrong way. After getting permission to "hangaround" for his book, he bought a BSA M/C. Not a bad bike but not a Harley. Then during a fight, he hid in his car's trunk instead of helping the 81's. Then he mouthed off, called an 81 a "punk" and got stomped. Tiny saved his life. To top it all off, he never paid up the 81's like he said he was. Hunter was the punk. Poor Skip. RIP...

If I choose to be Godly and patriotic and stand up for my morality I'm to be ridiculed and publicly branded a bigot or facists!! When in reality it is the other way around!! Why do liberal turds like Thompson have this insane urge to force their beliefs on me! If I don't accept and embrace them then I am to be ridiculed and slandered! To each his own! So stop forcing your toilet lifestyle on me!
@@Popesontour so you criticize Thompson and liberals for ridiculing and labeling you a bigot and a fascist for being "Godly and patriotic", while you label Thompson as a moron and liberals as monsters! You accuse Thompson of being rude and foul mouthed, while you refer to liberals as turds. You claim to support freedom of expression but you bemoan Thompson's freedom of expression because you see it as something which is being forced on you. You claim to have been slandered, while referring to Thompson as a piece of garbage. You say Thompson is closed minded, while saying you don't accept another point of view.
I agree.
Why you lying for?
Best entrance....EVER!!
He wrote what he wrote, its up to the reader what he wants to believe. "Only a coward hits his wife".
the dog even knew it was wrong to hit the women but the biker couldn't ...
Tell ya what. Don't mind your own business, and step in and tell an HA husband how to not treat his wife. Hunter did and stepped over the line and got his a$$ beat. (Support your local Hells Angels)
"I wanna know about the two kegs of beer you owe us" truth, but you get your head cracked open and I wouldn't be too forthcoming with beer either
Hunter stepped over the line and got his a$$ beat. (Support your local Hells Angels)
I always found it funny that he drove away so fast, and frightened, he didn't realize that Magoo was asleep in the back seat.
When the guy said "you have to beat your wife like a rug" Hunter said "I agree with you"
That's because Hunter smacked his wife around
very well put, my Brazilian brother. You get it way better than most of us Americans. Not shocking. LOL
Hats off to Hunter for having the balls to square up to a Hell's Angels and live to tell about it.
Squared up and got his wig split... and then couldn't meet this man's gaze. Yeah, real tough guy. More like a beaten dog.
@@TheWitchOvAgnesi your blind to the facts...if a non fighter stands his grounds its tougher than beating a man who stands for what he believes in. Dont let the game get to your head

So ...
a) a previous confrontation needs resolving about a man's right to beat his wife
b) man defending wife beating gets about 85% of talk time
c) man who came to defense of wife and was beat up for it is cut off at the end unable to give his side of the story
What a program.
Sounds about like what happens to anyone that comes on a mainstream media platform and brings up the JQ.

i might have, were I a writer. But then I understand respect. Respect begets respect. AND I would have been smart enough (and respectful enough. See how that works?) to let the club read it first. AND I'd have given them all the beer (and copies) they wanted. They're not hard to get along with. Just show them respect.

How times change; less than fifty years later and 'beating your girl like a rug' to 'keep her in line' just isn't nearly as funny as it seems to be to this (live)studio audience.. H.S.T seems to be the only sane individual in the room that day.
Indeed. Even the women in the audience are laughing. Many of these people are still alive. Now are we in a position to preach?
progress has been made no doubt. as much as I loved the music, the pop culture seemed slightly off. because of this upward humanistic trend, I suppose a critical look back is instructive.
***** His book on the Angels came out in 1966 and this encounter was probably around that time or not long afterward.
I think most of the female audience thought if a woman who goes with a hells angel gets battered then fuck her back in that area ,I cant see middle class white women caring much about a biker chick back in those days.
I do not feel like this.starting violence is not on.imo.

This is sad. The audience laughs at Hunter as “guilt by association, if you associate with these unredeemable types, you deserve whatever you get.” But he probably saved the woman’s life, by distracting away from her beating and it’s probably one of the best things he ever did for anyone, and certainly establishes that he was a real man, and that the angels were cowards, no matter how big a pack they ran in, and that that’s why cowards run in a pack.

when people are drunk, sometimes violence occurs, and the custom of men not hitting women, bing a part of the code of chivalry, is not respected by lower class people. Bikers are predominantly lower class people, as far as education and behavior is concerned. A woman who stays with aman who beats her is actually the femalecountrpart to a wife beater. in other words, if she was a man she would be a wife beater too. because she is a lowlife like her 'old man'. I remember looking for this interview, years ago, it's great to finally see it.
But I wonder why it hasn't occurred to some of the other commenters that this was pretty much a staged interview.
It’s too bad that Hunter can no longer sit down with them and bring the beer considering he blew his brains out in 2003.
