Well, your question has been answered because NOW, he IS a huge jazz star. He's a star by himself, with his own trio, and with Christian McBride's trio. I think he's just about tops in his field and in his age-group. He's extremely good and I can't wait to see/hear what he does next!
I just think this young man is wonderful on so many levels. Like his mentor standing with him, he already carries himself with such an elegant demeanor (you should see him now!) but importantly, he works hard to be rooted deeply in the music -- and the tradition of this music. I saw Christian cast a spell over an audience at Yoshi's here in Oakland not long ago: you could have heard a pin drop between the gasps of wonder and enjoyment. We're in good hands with Mr. Sands.
Why isn't Christian Sands a huge jazz star? This kid is flowing with talent....for heavens sake you record labels!! Do we have to do your freaking work for you? A talent brimming with joy. Been watching him since the Grammy appearance a few years ago...
One f the most important things to note about this setting, is the character building influence that Billy Taylor gives out. If you understand what's really happening here, he has a talented young group of musicians who've not only embraced this timeless genre, but the audience is made of of hungry, interested young people (and adults) who find this level of music very palatable. Seeds are being planted here which will one day flourish and germinate within the musical minds of a few. awesome.
AWESOME WORK CHRISTIAN SANDS! WOW. ..I seen him play as a young teen years ago at our local community college. CT has great talent! So enjoying to see him grow.... continue to thrive!
Wonderful is an understatement. Extremely talented young player and a great teacher and mentor to so many. Unfortunately, the kids who can not see in themselves what the human spirit is capable of achieving are among the missing.
i'm an Indian born in the year 1974 - i share my Birthday with Bill Evans (something of which i'm extremely proud although i'm nowhere near Him as a Musician/Pianist) - By The Grace Of God through my Mother and Father i grew up with Jazz ( and Classical both Indian and European ) literally from conception - amongst my earliest memories of the Music was going to sleep at night listening to The Amazing Bud Powell Volume 1 and By God's Grace i'll never forget how i felt when i first heard Powell Play Night In Tunisia especially the way He ended it with that min6 Chord. And also George Shearing playing East of The Sun West of The Moon - and Oscar Peterson playing Green Dolphin Street - etc.etc.etc.etc. - in High School it was standard practise to come home, eat some Mumbai Junk Food known as Pav Bhaaji, play Chick Corea's Mad Hatter on rotation and re-read Muhammad Ali's AutoBiography for the hundredth time - Later i was lucky to discover Bill Evans and basically heard EVERYTHING of His for over a thousand hours for sure - His NYC's No Lark overdubbed Piano recording - it's one of the most important evens in my life, when i hear that - that along with Bud Powell's Night In Tunisia - it for me is the same moment, in my own very small way - that Miles described in His AutoBiography when He heard Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie for the first time - that's how the AutoBiography begins - Later on i was Blessed to discover Mulgrew Miller - and these days, whenever i hit a low point - i go to Mulgrew Miller and also Woody Shaw - to get the spirit through Music to pick me up - Being from India - i've been Supremely Blessed to Grow up By The Grace Of God, Through My Mother and Father - with the Sublime Spiritual Tradition of this Ancient, Most Beautiful, Sublime and Greatest of All Civilizations ever - amongst other things i read Paramahansa Yogananda's AutoBiography of a Yogi so many times that this point if You opened the Book at random and read any sentence of the page, i could tell You 9/10 times what Chapter it is - The Spirituality of India combined with the Spirit of the Original America as expressed in Sound Through Jazz in the 20th Century is for me something that represents such extreme Beauty - Whenever i Hear the Old Jazz Masters - or even when i see a Movie like The GodFather or JFK - i Pray to God to return America to what is used to be 60/70 years ago - as opposed to the deviant i see today - By The Grace Of God and The Blessings of My Mother and Father - i ended up Playing Jazz Piano and doing Music Arrangement as my way in Life - Although i'll never be anywhere near the league and Greatness of the Great American Jazz Masters and my Heroes - th-cam.com/video/uwmE2qoUF6s/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/Hbpof8ip6o8/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/01g5wt3FvJg/w-d-xo.html Couple of clips - nothing phenomenal - just Your averagely decent Jazz Piano Player/Musician one amongst over a hundred thousand more living on this Planet right now. No - i'm not mad - i'm in fact one of the few that are still sane - inspite of everything - again - Wholely and Solely By The Grace Of God. Amen. SaiRama
I can definitely tell you are not stupid. But you stand up for stupid things. You can be all that intectually taught and literate. That doesn't make you wise. Or even sane. I mean, you can have great musical taste or healthy habits, or anything else that makes you think you are respectable as a person, I doubt you have enough assimilated information to understand something as complex as social and political History. You can understand economics, biology, physics, programming and whatnot. That still does not make you any more able and capable of knowing the truth about the whole universe. And I know you are not claiming to be. But still you failed to explain why you hate feminism, apparently knowing nothing about it. You can't even say why do you find this personified thing you're calling Left so evil. I mean, you clearly don't know what Left is. I bet you can't tell the difference between communism and socialism, or give any examples of where it has failed, any more than the ignorant people who enjoy eating earth and beating their heads against the wall. It doesn't matter if you don't think it's a ghost as most ignorants do, or if you know the earth isn't square/flat. You're still ignoring things as simple as DonaldTrump being a corrupt asshole who cannot and should not be in charge of one of the richest countries in the world. If you think all you're aptitudes and your background and scholarship makes you automatically entitled to know what you're saying and to spread or express misinformation and cliches without sounding and seeming dumb, you're completely wrong my friend. I know, I know... Having an opinion doesn't necessarily make you stupid. But it can make You a jerk. If you're smart, which I believe you are, you'll at least question yourself. Maybe your narcissism won't allow you to, as is the case with most people. Just remember, psychopaths are really smart too. I'm not accusing you of anything. And I hope I won't offend you. Also one more thing: you are the one who made such a big deal of yourself (and souding oh so humble) Anyway, peace out
so much music coming out of someone so young! Quite impressive. Love the reason why Billy Taylor wrote Cote D'ivoire. That was funny. part 3 coming up soon ?

AWESOME musicians. The future of Jazz is sure in good hands w/the young artist..
Seriously, how good is this guy for his age... I'm 19 and this is just facepalm-material for me >.< That's one artist I'll be following from now on.
I want a piano!
@educapro agreed we need more people like Billy Taylor and fewer like Donald Trump
