Tubing substitute for sponge strip in hobby knittting machine

Hobby machines that take sponge strips include the LK150, LK140, KX350 and LK100. these machines are easy to connect and create super ling machines for blanket and plus size knitting. But extra long sponge strips are not easy to find. I've long pondered a sponge substitute. Here's an adventure that has produced good results. I'm including the trial procces, failures and all, so you can see what worked for us as well as what did not so as to save yourself aggravation.
