Got here from my Botany course at Griffith uni in Turrbal country, lecturer linked your stuff on the course site on week 3 Mimosaceae & Fabaceae, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for keeping this knowledge alive and sharing it with us digital age mob who know our way around a computer better than the bush! Too deadly, brother, keep it up!
Agreed. Education on country, culture, customs and keeping it sacred, should be part of every school curriculum. I fought for religious instruction classes to become more dreamtime affiliated over 20yrs ago, for those who opted out of the indoctrination program.. #BLM.. a good time to recognise all life is sacred and we owe our very existence to the country that sustains us.. Bless.x
Hey bro need to upload more videos keep up the education... No one has ever showed me and my grandparents are too old I use tgis a a point ofeducation.
Hope you've done this again (and so much more with your kids) many times since! There is nothing as sacred to the senses, than the smoke from Xanthorrhoea resin.. Bless.x
It's properties are amazing when burnt as an incense on some charcoal like dragons blood for my meditations are amazing when using it to clear spaces. Cleanse energies and is a good mix when smudged with white sage. PerthPotions It's earthly scent is amongst the most beautiful and calming. We are so lucky to have this tree everywhere. Thanks for the video.
Thanks again for your comment. I will be uploading a video on how to mix it then another video on how to melt it. It's summer here in Australia with some really hot days forecast for the next few weeks and no fires are allowed to be lit currently so will be hard to complete that video. Basically I mix the grass tree sap with charcoal and kangaroo poo, then melt it with a hot rock from the fire, the rock will melt it down. If you check out my older video of the blade making it should show you how it melts.
Can I use the resin from the Xanthorrhoea to seal campfire fired pottery? I made a couple of clay bowls and have been told that I can't use a modern sealing technique.
Hey mate, sorry for the late reply but I would say yes you can seal it together and it will also be water proof. My ancestors used this to seal their own containers, canoes, etc for the same reasons.
great info mate, cheers. Just a humble tip, better editing would encourage more viewers, ie: time is precious ;-) Peace mate. Looking forward to learning more.
Thanks mate, I am super new to this whole editing thing. I have been given some pointers for the next videos from friends of mine. Happy to hear your suggestions if you like?
Jenia Kachan you maybe able to contact suppliers of the grass tree and request they collect the resin from the trunks of the tree, I would also recommend offering to pay them for their time to collect this.
Manchago Manchago thanks but I can’t just go and collect without a permit and it’s outside of my area by a long way. I did recently learn about a similar grass along a major river where I live which maybe of use.... some more learning to do I guess
Gulgadja in Dharug language. The growth rate I believe you didn't get right and it is always amazing to think how old many of them really are. I also believe the base of the leaves can be eaten and the inside of the trunk although that kills the plant. The spears also make a great walking stick although you should never take one from a tree that is living, search the ground for them.
It’s hard to find a good stick these days.

Thank you, this was interesting. Is there a part 2 yet?
So good you're out teaching this to your kids Simon. Why don't all Aussie kids learn indigenous bushcraft on regular field trips?
