I hope he sees this because I want him to know that the Honky Tonk Man is one of my favorite old school wrestles and Vince McMahon and the WWE are fools for losing you. You are absolutely THE Greatest WWF Intercontinental Champion...OF ALL TIME!!! Also I agree with him; Steamboat is truly one of the Top Ten greats of the Industry...BAR NONE!!!!
I remember after that match backstage, Honky was still dazed and said, "Did I win?" I didn't like him back then but he was hilariious 😅 Another funny moment in a tag match against Bushwackers where he had his guitar on one of the Bushwackers head and posed for a photo before he hit him 😂
He's right about one thing, decades later I can still muster some of that old hate I had for that character. It's like someone reminding you of a favorite restaurant that went out of business years ago, but you can instantly taste the food at the mere mention of it. My hatred for Honkey Tonk Man (the character) is the exact same way.
Hearing Honky Tonk praise Ricky Steamboat was unexpected. I've always thought Steamboat was one of the greatest technical wrestlers of that era, (just watch any of his matches with Ric Flair or Savage), but never thought someone like Honky would ever acknowledge that...
2:36. Honky was a fabulous heel. Super IC champ. He did funny heel promos, especially with mean gene. Honky Tonk and Jimmy Hart were fantastic together. 6:54 Honky's view on the pro wrestling business is logical. warrior rude feud was great.
If he was so great, why didn't he win the Intercontinental title more than once? Why didn’t he ever win the World title? Why were his hands so small? Why was he scared of Dynamite Kid?
Honky Tonk Man was so bad...is what made him cool, but he wasn't supposed to be a Bret Hart or Benoit, he was exactly what he was supposed to be, that's what put him over, one of my favorite heels of all time; great on the Mic, took falls well, broke the rules to win, you can't ask for more than that to get heat from the fans, job well done, thank you, Wayne Ferris!!!
The same analogy can be used for Warrior and Berg. They weren’t supposed to be putting on a technical spectacle, they were supposed to make fans thing they are unstoppable with brute force no nonsense smash mouth action. If Vince thought it was important to make him train to work correctly then he would have before he gained this poor reputation with his peers. Vince only cared about the money and not so much about his talents health and well being back then. Imagine the warrior with proper training? It could have been beautiful if done right, there is a middle ground that could have been met.
Arguably in the top 3 greatest heels of all time pantheon, surrounded by Rick Rude ( R.I.P. ), & prime heel, late 70's-late 80's Randy Savage ( R.I.P. ). HTM was a brilliant performer, well-spoken, & highly underrated. He mastered how to work a crown into a frenzy with what he said, good bumps & body language. His interviews in the early part of his IC reign, he was a powder keg on the mic, well before Bubba Ray Dudley's infamous ppv pipe bomb. The pop he got when he dropped the IC belt was like an orgasm reaching climax. This is what pro wrestling is missing today. Honky, the writers, & everyone who was involved with his IC title reign, right up to this build up did everything right. Fans could not wait to finally see Honky get beat! It didn't matter if Warrior was the shits- that was one of the greatest crowd pops of all time
I still remember the interview after Summerslam. Honky said to Mean Gene, something like: "I said I'd wrestle anybody. I didn't say I'd wrestle a warrior. God damn it, Mean Gene, they sent a warrior. It's not fair. The belt is mine. I'm the greatest of all time!" A classic character in WWE history. Of course, that IC Title match was when I became a huge fan of the Ultimate Warrior.
From what I've heard Honkytonk's title length was never intended, he was supposed to lose the IC Title much earlier, but the people they were looking at to dethrone him for one reason or another kept being forced to bow out before it happened.
Honk was very good at his job. Even when he came back for an extremely brief stint in the attitude era he was darn near perfect. I still dont know why that angle got scrapped.
It isn't true that Steamboat never wrestled the Honky Tonk Man again after he dropped the IC belt to him. They had at least three return matches for the IC Title, with two of them being at MSG.
Saying that Rick Rude taught Warrior how to work is nonsense, because Warrior and Rick Rude worked together before they coming to the WWF, so if we assume that Warrior did not know how to work when he first came to WWF, why did Rick Rude not teach him how to work before the WWF? They had already wrestled each other many times before WWF.
I hated this "match" so much. As a kid watching wrestling in the mid-80s and early 90s, I ALWAYS rooted for the heels -- just found them MUCH more interesting. Loved Honky and HATED the Warrior (and Hogan, too). But hey, I respect the fact that this squash match was basically Honky's call -- and I gotta admit, it was very effective. The crowd pop WAS amazing, even though at the time I was yelling and screaming that it wasn't fair LOL.
That's the way I say, if we hated million dollar man or whoever so much, they were doing a great job in portraying that character. A credit to most of those heels back in the day, they did a fantastic job. They should of all got roughly same pay as each other. Hogan is no different than any other wrestler, he couldn't work that well and only knew about as many moves as you can count on your fingers.
I don’t think Honky was nitpicking about a match here or there. He was referring to the fact that Steamboat didn’t immediately follow up with a LONG TERM run to have a feud.
Fun Fact: HTM beat Steamboat in June ‘87 (at least it aired in June ‘87). Steamboat didn’t show up again on a WWE PPV until March ‘88-WrestleMania IV. That’s 9 months out of the tv spotlight. HTM is right: if Steamboat stuck around for a bit, they would’ve made killer business.

So he refused to lose clean to Macho Man because according to HTM, it would "bury his character" but lets Warrior squash him worse than any jobber in history? Makes zero sense.
The reason was the behind the scenes negotiations. According to HTM with Savage, Vince brought HTM and Jimmy to his place along with Savage and Liz and Vince talked about the match like HTM wasn't even there. With Warrior, they included him in the match planning that's why he didn't have an issue jobbing to Warrior.
Not really. That match with Savage was much earlier in his reign. By the time Warrior got his shot, Honky obviously knew it had gone on plenty long enough.
