Performed by the First Company of Guangdong Academy of Chaozhou (Teochew) Opera, the two actresses in the lead are Yao Xuanqiu and Chen Yu.
This recording was made in 1983. It is a classic Teochew opera that focuses on delicate singing and subtly expressive stage movements.
This is an excerpt taken from the classic story of "Yu Tang Chun“ (玉堂春).
It tells of the story of a courtesan, Su-san (苏三), who is implicated in a murder of which she is innocent, and how she feels betrayed by her lover, who is by coincidence the presiding judge, as he has repeatedly denied knowing her during the court proceedings.
Little does she knows that her being taken to the pavilion on that freezing, snowy night has been arranged by a well-meaning senior official to test the resolve of her lover, Wang Jinlong (王金龙) who has reasons for not acknowledging her openly at the court.
After a brief exchange of teary arias, the misunderstanding between the lovers is eventually resolved amicably. Jinlong decides to uphold justice for Su-san.
All's well that ends well. That's Chinese opera.
