  • One of the biggest and most popular content creators on planet Earth, Alex Hormozi, has made a major shift in his content strategy, moving away from short form content and highly edited content. And we have to talk about it. What we're gonna do in today's episode is unpack his announcement that he posted a couple of weeks ago about his major shift and where he's taking his content and why it's strategic and why I think you need to pay attention. I'm gonna unpack three lessons when it comes to content marketing that's working today that if you're a business owner, you need to understand.

Hey Graham, how do you stay on track so smoothly? Do you have another screen or notebook below your camera? Are you reading/checking off bullet points or full script for reference? Doesn’t feel like you’re reading off teleprompter. 🤔

I feel validated too. I hate editing, I rather just make a 20-40 minute live class. Just set a topic, a business goal for the live and go!

This helped so much. I was getting frustrated by generating all this content and not seeing results. I fell into the likes, shares, views trap. Thank you for redirecting my focus. "100 views by right people beats 1,000,000 views from non customers"

This is very validating. I’m just starting out my TH-cam journey, and my gut instinct was to do longform with minimal editing. All of the experts I truly admire operate this way, people like Dr. Ramani, Peter Levine, Lama Tsultrim Allione, I could go on and on. I heard someone describe all of the over editing as editing from insecurity. My perspective is, if you are a subject matter expert, people will listen to you because you are you and you have valuable information to share, they’re not going to care about the edits.
Also, my target audience are highly sensitive people who don’t care about fancy editing. In fact, we usually appreciate minimalism and can be easily overstimulated.
I think my biggest take away from listening to this was you saying that social media isn’t real content 💥

Short-form is, at best, a way to keep presence of mind and branding. It may convert BUT it's probably better for people who've already seen your long-form stuff and then when they are on a social channel, your short-form content serves as an ad basically. Long-form builds the foundation.

“If you’re making content to get views and to get famous and to feel good about yourself, you’re missing the point of why you’re making content” this hits! As a blogger and TH-camr in the geek lifestyle niche, I have been back and forth with social media, it’s so frustrating. I quit it altogether once and my creativity and production on blog and TH-cam was at an all time high. Did many people forget me because I wasn’t reminding them on social of my new content? Yes, but I was super focused and had mental clarity which in turn made better videos.

You are saying things I have been feeling for a while and I’m glad you said it out loud. I think it’s all about optimizing for a human experience, not an algorithm. Because at the end of the day, if we’re on here for business purposes, we are looking to do business with other human beings. If the algorithm helps us reach the exact person, gravy! That’s exactly what the algorithm is supposed to do. But it is not our job to act as slaves to a digital master. Thanks for this video!

But everything here is pretty spot on Graham.

In addition to spending the time researching the topics well and scriping/recording/editing several videos in bulk, I am spending MORE time actually getting my website up and running ready to receive the clients and community members I am looking to attract. While I am seeking to educate on my niche I cannot discard that I want them to actually visit my site and stay and engage there. I think you can make that shift only once you have a big enough audience.
People are not interested in pure business content, they want to be entertained so I think the most challenging thing is to be able to make edutainment content with click bait tittles and thumbnails until you got enough audience to be able to shift.
It is a sad psychological bias but people will, most of the time, give you credibility according to your number of subscribers though we already seen so many scam amongst online gurus…

What you are saying reflects exactly what I'm thinking. I'm 55 years old and getting into content creation, I'm a seasoned web dev/designer. AI is a threat for me, so will work on marketing myself as a human. I realize that what customers want is personalized service, they don't care too much about the tech side of things. I love how you bumped your microphone and didn't worry about it! 😁No edits indeed! I see that you look away a lot, probably at some notes? Doesn't seeem to affect you connecting with the audience. Love this! I've been wanting to go long-form for awhile, but I too have a music production brand, so I don't think I can just to a talking-head type podcast, since my audience wants to see music production techniques and tips inside of a DAW. So would long-form look like a long mixing or songwriting session?

    • @GrahamCochrane

Whenever you make this point (long form, fewer edits) I’m dying for you to draw the analogy with Recording Revolution days.
Get it right at the source.
Get your mic in the right place. Get your room set up. Get your performance dialled in.
Then you don’t have to mess with loads of plugins to “fix it in the edit”.
    Same deal here.
Talk about things your audience will be interested in. Shape your delivery in ways that hold attention. Turn up your performance energy a bit.
Then you don’t have to “fix it in the edit” to get engagement happening.

Thanks Graham, i've been dipping into your content since the Recording Revolution days, great stuff! Great examples by the way. Can we hear an argument in favour of why this would work for new creators? You & Alex have a huge amount of trust and credibility and have built multi million businesses and have significantly sized YT channels. Why would this approach work for an educational youtuber just starting out, 0 subs, not as much video quality, still finding their feet, no multi million revenue business, whilst they might have some business experience elsewhere, they have little to no youtube experience. Can we realistically expect viewers to sit with them for 30-45 mins?

    • @GrahamCochrane
      @GrahamCochrane  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Great question! And I believe the answer is "yes" it'll work for a new channel. There is nothing inherently different between a big channel and a new channel. TH-cam doesn't favor big channels anymore - it favors relevant content. So make content that is relevant to your target market. It will still show up in search results, and no one cares how long it is if it's good.

I think TH-cam promotes highly edited videos. I once heavily edited a video on a yt channel and TH-cam showed it to a few thousand people right away (I was new on yt) and for my new channel I did zero edit and yt showed it to zero people, so I guess that’s why many people edit. Algorithm is the first viewer

Doing to much in not the best but on the other hand I don't thing it applies into creative/artistic "content" editing is part of someone's expression.
I thing it's all about balance. But sometimes the less editing the more premium video feels like.

I tell people this all the time. Followers DO NOT equal money! People have to stop getting caught up on these vanity metrics.

Tim Ferriss has been doing long form pod casts for years now, though I'm sure they are edited.

Just remember it's ALL of the backs anyone steps on that make that place you and Alex are in successful. Algorithms like peoples attention. If people don't feel hope why buy your book? Just let the 10 bros buy them😂. Ditto for Alex and Layla. Alex also has Layla meeting with group chat videos. That is two people doing the opposite job🎉

Yes I hate editing. it's just better long form. I get stuck with the avatars.

I knew I wanted to speak to my specific customer , but everyone is speaking about views and optimisation. I know I don't need 1,000s of view. I just need people who need what I have to offer.

Alex Hormozi talking about nutrition or fashion is DISASTROUS. He really does need to stick to what he knows.
I did love his super succinct, punchy videos, though. You get a massive business or life lesson in just a few minutes. I'll miss those.

Here is a tough question: If Graham was ugly could he build these TH-cam. Channels so easily. It’s easy to build TH-cam channels when you look like the lost member of *NSYNC!!! I am listening anyway. He makes sense. That’s just a lil thought in da back of my head.

I'm also so tired of the endless B roll overlays and hyper noise, flash and effects. I get far more value from a knowledgeable person just looking directly at the camera and talking.

Tbh. Can’t stand that guy. He’s constantly in my feed, and his content is generic and silly. But I give him this, he’s making a public challenge to show whether he not he really has something to contribute to the business education of the average person. I’ll keep an open mind.

Don’t watch his content, but rather watch podcasts he’s featured on. Chris William and Ali Abdaal are great ones. You get to see his character and his story. I agree that his content is goofy as, but that’s a product of the retention-editing era of TH-cam and part of his wider business strategy.

Just because you are in secondary doesn’t mean your primary school teacher is generic and silly.
Many people still need it especially when the school doesn’t teach

Anybody that dislikes either Hormozi is just out of jealousy and their ego makes them think they are somehow better than they are, or thinks they are too young to be that high level. Or Alex gives away so free content that’s 100x better than yours you used to try and charge people for and you’re bitter. Otherwise I don’t see how someone wouldn’t appreciate the value they bring to the table. But that’s just my opinion.

He’s cringe asf. The fitness bro/ entrepreneur is a nauseating trope that he desperately wants to establish. Anyone that wants defends his mindless, annoying content is probably conditioned to aimless scrolling, low quality content, and might have self-esteem issues. Source: I have an Ivy League education, I would hope I can identify a lecturer that’s worth listening to.
