    I've learned stability is key, I adapted my neos to live in 850ppm, ~10gh ~4dkh 7.5-8ish ph. I had some issues early on, but once I started dosing prime/safe with any additive(like nutrients or some of my heavier bacteria) I don't know if some of those bacteria contain nitrogen from dieoff or what, but that's been keeping me going for almost 3 months now? Been over a month since a loss! The last loss was when I realized it takes about 4 weeks for my kh to deplete. One couldn't handle the change, I have about 200 living happily though! Started with about 20 :D My babies are getting berried, my mature ones are getting berried again, babies all around, seems like its working out! (I just have to maintain this and keep it stable) and hope for the best

    Absolutely lovely video Shrimp Mania, thank you! I have been meaning to ask you, I have been breeding caridina shrimps for 5 years now with its natural up and downs. I saw a video by shrimp time on the most important factors on molting and what causes molts to go wrong. I have experienced molting problems for a long time and after a few years of having to learn that I was overfeeding, ammonia spikes because of thick soils and experimenting with different levels of kH and gH for crystal reds, I think I learned a lot. However, I do still see molting issues especially among adult shrimps, never on baby/younger shrimps in my tanks from time to time. Perhaps with your experience you have encountered this as well and could give an indication on what could be wrong and how you help your shrimps molt well. I would love a video about it!

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had some molting issues before but it only happened in some of my tanks and because all my tanks were setup almost identical with the same water parameters, I can only think of bad genetics. It also happens when your shrimp is not ready to molt but is forced to molt by changing water temperature or parameters very quickly

    • @remonvanginkel3234
      @remonvanginkel3234 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShrimpMania Thank you! I did notice previously that it would occur after water changes. That's why I changed it to only adding RO water when evaporation occurs and I do maximum water changes of 10% only with pure RO and the salts I slowly add later over the week to do it more like VIN. I find it triggers molting much less for now, although I have to be careful with the amount of salt I add per time. For now a 1-2 ppm change max per time seems good without die off. Perhaps bad genetics as well, I might try mixing some shrimp for different people. Previously I would only buy about 20 to start from one seller. Would you recommend a certain amount of generations after which you have to introduce new genetics into your population? As for now I only know the short carapace as a sign of inbreeding

    The TDS of tap cold water is 46,
    KH 0 (max 1) GH 2 pH 7
    I just add Salty Shrimp GH+ to make TDS 160 (gH about 6) & caridina shrimps are happy (no special substrate).
    The pH is about 6.6 in the tank.

    My caradena shrimp. Galaxy fishbone and prl have done well since i started my 120L tank about 4 months ago. I started off with 30 shrimp. my 3 female shrimp got berryed and had babies 2 of them got berryed again a few days later and have since given birth .so i have lots of baby shrimp of all ages. But iv noticed now all the babies are born my three females are hiding a lot now and not getting berryed. All my water parameters are the same as before my heater keeps the water veary stable temp so my shrimp dont know its the start of winter. Do shrimp have a rest from breeding after a couple of pregnancies or because there is a lot more babies in the tank thay slow down it is a moderately planted tank with plenty of room. Have you any ideas why thay have stopped breading . Its only bean a couple of weeks since the last batch of baby's or am i being to inpatient

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sometimes females can have a break for a month or two it's normal. They not get berried every single molt they can skip some time. It can depend on how many babies already in the tank and to maximise your breeding activity its better to move the babies to different tank that's what most of the breeders do

  • @olivierl9523
    @olivierl9523 ปีที่แล้ว

    Measuring TDS for shrimp keeping is useless because not accurate, you need to use an EC meter with temperature correction. TDS reading is an EC reading multiplied by a variable coefficient when the water content is known (not the case for tap water or water in a tank). Shrimp salts manufacturers give always the values in EC, even if they know the content and weight of the salts. TDS means total dissolved solids; it is a mass per volume. So, a TDS meter can only be used if the water content is known and constant, not the case here. The only time a TDS meter gives the wright reading is when it's 0, for pure water.

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  ปีที่แล้ว

      Both TDS and EC meters are not 100% accurate but we dont need them in this hobby. Both measures electric conductivity but the difference is that the TDS meter converts TDS with a multiplier giving you the same reading in ppm instead of microsomes. Both EC and TDS meters can't measure solids that do not conduct electricity, but we don't have those solids in the salts we are mixing for them. Caridina can thrive in a wide range of TDS 80-180 the accuracy is not important we are not in the chem lab. My TDS meter has temperature correction for your information.

    • @olivierl9523
      @olivierl9523 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShrimpMania No offense but I've being explaining that to many shrimp keepers and it does make sense. TDS meters don't use all the same coefficient to convert from EC to TDS and I have seen a range above TDS 100 (+/-50) between the TDS meters. An EC meter has 3 points of calibration, and it is extremely accurate. Anyway, this EC reading is only relevant for the purified then mineralized water. The tank water reading doesn't tell much about its composition, same for the tap water. My point here is that there is a gap between approximation and accuracy. It's just one of many factors you want to be able to control.
      The inaccuracy of a TDS meter can easily put you out of range.
      Keep shrimping

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 4 tds pens all of them giving me almost the same readings with 2-5 points differences. They are all fairly accurate.
