"Beat the crap out of you"? Perhaps, and that is always an option, but social pressure works in other ways too, maybe a positive reward rather than a negative punishment. Do you like to get food water and live in a house? I bet you do and to get those things there are some things you must do and do them within a society. Modern people know or can imagine what pain and fear are like, but can we so easily imagine the very literal hunger thirst and cold that was the basic condition for most of our ancestors' lives? Social norms are shaped by violence and weapons occasionally but are shaped by hunger and food constantly.
