  • Towing is not something anyone can do on the operator side of the line - it is a specialty to be learned under professional supervision. Proper training is utmost important to prevent accidents.
    With a knowledgeable operator, and safe environment, Paragliding towing is a ton of fun to do. Great for flatlanders!😄

    That remote control undoubtedly has more than one output signal. If you were to add one more servo to the receiver end, you could use this to remotely engage the tension. I'm not saying it is the safest, but it would solve mile of walking back and forth.

    It is hard to pull out because the brake mode is engaged on the motor controller more than likely. The controller should have the option to automatically brake or not when the throttle is centered. The one issue with turning the brake off is when you release after towing the wheel will continue to spin a bit and if the end of the line is close it could get sucked in.

      Not a real issue to work against the magnets - good cardio😃I never rewind the line after release, The drogue drops and lands on the field to be used by the students as a target to practice landing.     If you pull a bunch of line out and leave in on the ground next to the winch, then arm the system, then walk down the beach, then use the remote to take up the slack, it will save you one trip down the beach.

    sometime next year I plan to make one. Wow its going to be amazing ... its been a long time dream.We don't have PG hills aound here ... the beach was always tempting .... I used to fly Microlight Trikes on the beach ....low tide ..loooooonnnggg runway LOL ...who needs a long runway with a Microlight Trike anyways

      I have built electric winches before but not this one, or at least not the entire system. A friend in Florida built it for me and I too care of the cart part. I have been towing paragliders for over 25 years to date and accumulated quite a bit of experience over time. I also trained tow operators. Most of my systems were static or stationary winches. You can contact E-winch in Florida. I do not think he will give anyone the specifics because he makes them to sell them but you could try.

    Have you tested if it is possible to release under full tension? I mean, I see that you have thought a lot about safety, but if for some reason you cannot control the winch anymore (I hope that the system fail-safes to motor off when radio contact is lost?), you'll need a way to disconnect in case of lockout or other emergency. You probably know that releases exist that auto-release when a certain towing angle is exceeded.

      The quick release is bullet proof and never failed over 25 years of towing. In the early 90's I trusted a guy to tow me on my own winch. It turned out (my fault at the time) he had only towed Parasails behind a boat with a static system. He floored the winch, my angle of attack went off the rail and this is when I realized what was going on. I grabbed both my toggles in a flash in one hand, yanked the same quick release you saw in this video - my wing had a massive surge which I was expecting and controlled and then blasted the idiot after landing.

    All you need to avoid trudging back and forth is an electric trike to put your rig on and run out the line, then you land near it, set out the rig for the next lift and use it to collect the line and run it out.

    Phil this is amazing. I think you need a remote way to release the tow line. I was thinking, what about using the reverse on your controller but with a second paired receiver with a solenoid pin release mounted on your bridal?

      I know it is possible to do because someone I know built his own similar winch and added a remote release but honestly I do not need it because I only use the rig for teaching and have the guys fetching the line back to the pilots while I can stay near the winch and operate the switch.

      I learned when the first paragliding reliable winch from a french company ELLIPSE designed one in the early 90's. I went to France to be trained - purchased a winch from them and brought it to the US. Then I towed paraglider pilots for 20 years in the US. After that, I designed my own gas operated systems before finally building an electric system which was replaced after 4 years by the current lighter one which was made for my school - I designed and built the cart for beach use.

I used to make electric winches before this one and we talked about what I needed for the school. I designed and built the rest.     All you need a ~400 meters of line, big enough field and wind ~24...26kmph. Its all you need to climb up to ~300m altitude ...

      "All you need" doesn't cut it. We do not have that luxury on Long Island where every square inch is fought for😫 Wind we have - Line I have (4000'). On top of that, there is heavy aerial traffic to the major hubs flying over us. We are stuck!

      Pas de limitation vraiment du moment ou la télécommande est pointée vers le treuil. J'ai 4000' de ligne.

      Et ta remorque est assez lourde pour ne pas glisser? Car dans la même idée, nous avons testé la traction avec 200m de corde et un quad avec le système de largage qui va bien.
      Ton système est bien mieux et surtout tu gère tout et tu es autonome. Le top

      Salut Philippe.
      Sans thermiques ou bourrasques de vent, autrement dit "sans vent" et sur papier, tu ne peux monter que jusqu'à la moitié de la longueur de la ligne de treuillage, ou dans mon cas 4000' divisés par 2 = 2000'. Enlève quelques mètres car la ligne doit être enroulée autour de la roue du treuil afin d'être sécurisée et quelques mètres en moins aussi côté pilote car il va courir cloué au sol pendant quelques secondes.
      Encore une fois, ce n'est pas une spécialité que n'importe qui peut faire même la personne peut avoir un treuil. Cela va beaucoup plus loin que ça en termes de sécurité sécurité - voir et prévoir ce que fera la voile et le pilote en passant dans un thermique pendant l'opération, ou si la tension de ligne soudainement monte fort pour cause de bourrasque ou thermique - quoi faire côté treuilleur - quelle recommandation à donner au pilote à ce moment ou même d'avance - par example lui indiquant qu'il pas surement entrer dans un thermique. Aussi quoi faire si la montée est assez rapide qu'il n'y a plus besoin de treuiller et faire attention à ne pas entrer dans un "lockout" (le plus dangereux). Reconnaitre l'angle maximal de la ligne et arrêter de treuiller bien avant que tout tourne au vinaigre. Reconnaitre le début d'un lockout et immédiatement faire le nécessaire pour tout arrêter (ramener la tension à zéro mais pas trop vite pour éviter une abattée) - donner des instruction précises au pilote pour éviter toute situation problématique. Souvent le pilote ne réagit pas aux ordres du treuilleur et c'est la responsabilité du treuilleur de prendre les chose en mains avant qu'un problème ne se développe.
      Aussi et important, après largage, le parachute, même sous tension, pourra partir en dérive à cause d'une vitesse vent plus élevée en altitude, ce qui pourrait potentiellement créer des problèmes si la ligne même enroulée vite (600' par minutes comme example), commence à passer au dessus de lignes électriques, maisons, forêts et autres. En gros, il faut un treuilleur avec de l'expérience, un grand terrain, un treuil efficace, un grand niveau de sécurité et un pilote sachant ce qu'il fait pour des largages à haute altitude.

    What is the maximum tow force this can produce ? could you use it for dual HG

      Hang Gliders: I do not know anything about Deltas, sorry. But it could pull a tandem PG rig in around 9 to 10mph. Note that the further away from the spool the stronger the pull which will also become and less strenuous to the system. I must emphasize that towing is great but also dangerous if the tow operator does not know what he is looking at. Most accidents will take place because the guy in control will not foresee a potential lockout situation due to pilot error, or not responding, or the glider getting hit by a gust or thermal, or pilot not responding to commands. The tow operator must react accordingly, quickly and precisely. A winch must have safety features built in. Other reasons can turn a towing sequence into a bad situation such as the tow line getting stuck on the pilot's shoes, the pilot could panic and completely freak out even after being debriefed, and most important knowing what to tell him calmly what to do to bring him back to the ground safely. The safety list is long. Towing is a skill to be learned under professional supervision and not something to be taken lightly.

      @@philsgreenice Yes, towing can go bad quickly if not done right. I was once pulled down towards the towing unit for what felt like 5 seconds, when during stepped towing, I was almost above the towing unit and the operator forgot to push the clutch to release tension in order for me to turn back. That's.... very scary. I was about to do an emergency release under tension (very dangerous) when the clutch was finally activated and I could glide on and make the turn.

      @@harryhalfmoon Use a paramotor instead. Step towing is dangerous and not worth the trouble😄 My winch is only used for low altitude tows and training students. To give you an idea, we have a local PG site and this season I had 3 flight free-flying and yesterday was my 49th electric PPG flight🤩 More vids to come...

    Is it possible to step-tow with that electric winch in case you don't have enough space to lay out more than 1000 ft of line?

      I only have done it but not with an electric system. I would need to be able to disable the brushles motor with the remote at the right time and height and fly/turn 180 in one direction, fly downwind, turn upwind again, rearm the winch, accelerate to pickup the slack and start climbing again. It is kinda dangerous to do - the tow operator and pilot must be in perfect sync.

      @@philsgreenice I imagine it must be easier and safer to do on a PG wing than an HG wing. On a hang glider, it is possible to catch the towline on the wing during the 180 turn, but on a PG wing the canopy is high above the pilot. The electric motor when not disabled has too much friction for it to pay out line when flying away from the winch?

      @@skeetzoid still a problem if the pg wing turns the wrong way to face the upwind direction again because that tow line will wrap itself around the pilot’s legs since the quick release is located at hips height and pointing down at a slight angle.

      Hi Richy,... Nope! Not an issue. It never happened, and in the event it would, the ribbon would tear apart so easily as it is paper thin and fly away or disintegrate.

    Isn't it better to get an operator to control the winch? Seems like not very convenient. Many risks at same time for 30 seconds of flying

      Thank you for your comments. I had made an upgrade for the cart and drove to the beach to test it. The front axle was modified to rotate horizontally and better track the cart in deep sand while pulling it. It worked perfectly and I am happy with the result.
      That said, I have over 25 years paragliding towing experience and designed various rigs gas and electric. All of them, including the one in this video, were made to tow my students at low AGL, nothing else. th-cam.com/video/gSwKxnEooSg/w-d-xo.html I also have trained a few ow operators over time. Towing is fun but must be learned under qualified supervision due to the inherent risks associated with the practice.

Anyway I think this could be used not only for low AGL flights but also for SIV cources above the sea. This winch is small, that's an opportunity to settle it at any beach place. Need to have longer rope maybe to get higher

      @@EARAISED Noty possible around here - water too choppy and too many restricted air spaces with international flights in and out of the area.       @@philsgreenice Nvm, in our area first 300 meters of AGL is open even if you are several miles from airport.
      I know guys who make a SIV with winch connected to a car, driven near a sea, just 50 meters to the beach, so after deattach you may fly above the water and do the exercises.
      Then isn't it possible to find a small hill to have a training for students? Many pilots have mistakes with mountain starts after winch studies

    I only anchored mine from behind once, the wind took me to one side and the winch toppled over, you have to be very quick to react, don't take any chances, anchor the winch down front back and both sides, Have you considered using a " turn around pully " for added safety,This is my setup, th-cam.com/video/tXhWJi1jDz0/w-d-xo.html

      No need to have three anchoring points on this one. In the past, I used a return pulley system on and off for twenty years pulling paraglider pilots - I have close to 30 years experience. It worked well. I also designed many systems, some using gas motors among other designs. My first winch (stationary) was working with the differential of a car with only one wheel spinning - it worked with an electromagnetic clutch.
