I love SFOTF videos. Deep line chironomid fishing has been one my favorite ways to catch fish for 10 years or more. The takes are intoxicating. Don't set the rod down unless it's in a rod holder. No, really don't!
Lol…thx JB and YES, so true…always have your rod in a holder or your hand when deep lining or you definitely risk losing it overboard. Nothing better than a deep line take!

I've tried deep line chironimids a few times,never had any success.I find bottom with forceps,reel up a foot,(sometimes I'm not sure if I have bottom),fish are on finder. Went to sheridan, a few years back,and anchored by the tip of the big island,along with about 25 other boats,seen maybe 2 or 3 fish hooked.For 4 days the same,boats everywhere,nobody hooking any fish to speak of,perhaps 2 or 3 the whole day. What am I am I/we doing wrong?What is the missing ingredient?
The problem is it’s not that simple ☺️. There are many factors in play. The fish could be there but nothing hatching or they aren’t feeding, especially if no one else is catching fish. Sheridan is a finicky lake and you have to find ‘happy’ fish. If we find fish and know we are in the zone, we will try six to eight of our goto Chironomid patterns and give it an hour. If nothing after the hour, we move on to try and find happy (hungry) fish. Rule of thumb is the fish will normally cruise a foot or two off the bottom BUT they are always looking up, expecting clear lakes, so make sure you vary your depths, vary colors and sizes, and move to a new location if nothing biting. Hope this helps.

No, just the first time. I’ve shown this on other shows where you put a small piece of masking tape on your line, usually around the lower eye of your rod, once the fly is at the proper depth. The small amount of tape won’t slide on your line or get hung up when you catch fish. After you land a fish, just pull out your line until the tape is back near the eyelet. I will check depth with my forceps every after a few fish just to confirm my depth hasn’t changed.
