    All of you guys getting offended like "oh my gosh my hair ia natural too" Natural in the black community means you don't have any chemicals in your hair. For a long time women of color wouldn't embrace there natural hair textures and now they are! That's what natural hair means.

    • @mareek2007
      @mareek2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Um Africans definitely do use the term.I'm West African born and raised and the term natural was/is used in Africa even by my mothers generation ,especially when relaxers were really popular.

      Yeah but she implied it was more of an American thing just letting her know its not just an "American thing" but really common term amongst majority of black people in general, well on the African continent anyways.

      Really? So am I, and I know we can say that "our hair is natural" but we don't say "I'm natural" like Black Americans do. That would sounds very awkward and would not refer to your hair only,

    Whoever is offended at Buzzfeed using the word "natural" is way too sensitive. It's not a big deal and it's the way most black women describe their hair -- Especially when they grow it out like that. I know the word natural is not exclusive to just black women's hair but what word would you rather them use? Nappy? Come on. Find something better to be worried about.

    Lol all of these non- black people are so confused about what they mean about "natural". In the black community we use the word NATURAL to describe hair that does not have chemicals like hair relaxers that permanently straightens the hair. Yes your hair is natural too, but we use that word differently in our culture lol

    • @chantalfredrich5326
      @chantalfredrich5326 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have a question. I was born with curly hair, but as the only person in my family and my school with non straight hair, I straightened it and even used chemicals. Now I wear my hair curly as it is.
      Is there a word for people who aren’t POC but stopped straightening their hair with chemicals and wear it in its natural form or am I allowed to call my curls ‘natural hair’ too without using the word wrong?

    • @ah-vb1tm
      @ah-vb1tm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      lol hi yes you can call you hair natural bc it is! "natural" isn't a term coined just for POC. natural hair is simply the hair your were born with, like in its natural state without chemicals or dyes :)

    • @laurencameron3150
      @laurencameron3150 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Chantal Fredrich Black women usually used the term natural as a way to describe hair that is absent of a chemical straightener/ texturizer aka relaxer. If the chemicals you speak of are products you put in your hair per usual then that may not be the proper term but you can describe you hair as you wish

      I love how you say non black people and not white people, because I hate it when people only refer one race thinks this or that.. I'm mixed with 3a hair and I don't really know about natural hair unless my mom's side of the family gets all into and deep within how hair works and everything. (their black)

  • @Katherine_999
    @Katherine_999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +798

    I am white AF with thin oily hair and I use dry shampoo regularly. When I saw the title I knew it meant non chemically treated or straightened black women's hair. Technically all you people complaining with 'but my straight hair is natural' your hair is naturally straight but the term "natural hair" is primarily used to describe persons of African decent's natural unprocessed hair texture. I am far from the most informed in hair care of any sort, but I wonder if most of you who are so offended by the video not "being clear enough" about the women it would be showing are just imitating ignorance in order to whine about buzzfeed making a video that was not about you personally. Not all media has to cater to us white persons! People like you who pitch a fit over not being the intended audience of each video are ridiculous, and I hope one day you can get over yourselves, because you make the rest of us look like petulant children.

      I dont think theres nothingn wrong with white womens oily hair. I just feel women of wvery race have something there insecure about. I m black and i used the dry shampoo and i liked it. It put body and volume back to my hair because my hair got so oily from using oils and butters which weighs it down. Because i am blackni wouldnt use all the time. Like i would rather wash my hair every week and feel water rub through my scalp because it feels amazing especially in the sunmer. But say if i just dont have timw to wash my hair and detangle i would use it. But i am sticking with my regualr wash and deep condition routine.

    I think its funny how ppl are saying "Ewww" to not shampooing their hair everyday. Shampooing your hair everyday is actually making your hair worse. You need those natural oils secreted from the glands in your hair to moisturize your scalp. Hot water + shampooing everyday can lead to dry scalp & dandruff! As a girl with thick, wavy hair, I know some things about some things.

    • @excuseme5086
      @excuseme5086 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It sounds like you're generalizing everything. Straight haired people SHOULD shampoo their hair everyday or almost everyday because they're gonna have excessive oils on it. Other hair types shouldn't.

    • @classicerynn8452
      @classicerynn8452 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@excuseme5086 Yes, pin-straight hair people or people with thin hair probably should wash & condition once a day with specialty products for their hair type. But the average to thick-haired/naturally-haired person shouldn't. Try it. Go three or four days without washing, then use shampoo & condition. You might notice a difference, and you might not. I know it's not for everyone. But those people's judgments and 'Ewww' comments sent aren't needed.

      Christina Hayles I agree. I'm Hispanic with unruly curly hair but even then I wouldn't regard myself as having "natural hair" because it's easier to "tame" as so to speak. • @whitneyhoustonstan2472
      @whitneyhoustonstan2472 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem isn’t the definition of the word. The problem is how specific the word is to one race, or portion of people with a similar characteristic. Technically speaking, everyone who doesn’t use chemicals or hair texture changing techniques in their hair is “natural.” Although it is aimed more towards black people, anyone can be natural. They (people with non-Afro hair) have every right to use that term. So I don’t see how Afro-haired people need to be triggered over something so trivial. This video is for Afro-haired people, and that is great in itself, considering the fact that curly haired people don’t nearly get as much recognition as straight haired people.

    The amount of people getting offended because of the word "natural" is very alarming. There's no need to change the title of the video because you had a misunderstanding of what the word truly means. This was literally an experiment to see if dry shampoo would have an effect on natural hair. Saying "Why try something if you know it's not for you" clearly shows how much you don't know about natural hair because most of the time you have to go through multiple products to find something that works for you. To everyone saying because I don't have curly hair my hair isn't natural, Google the term. Natural hair is a term used for people with hair that is between 3b and 4c (mainly 4a-4c) and they don't get relaxers or chemical treatments. There are plenty of videos on TH-cam about it. It is not offensive and has been used for years.

    • @Spiqen
      @Spiqen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hello, I have seen many comments like yours on this video, and I understand where they are coming from. But the thing with being offended is that you can not tell someone that they can not be offended about something because you say so. And using the reasoning that it has been used for years is not the greatest option since some of the most offensive words have been used for much longer then that.
      Thing is that people that have straight or untreated hair feel upset because the wording even though not meant in that way insinuate that unless you treat it, straight hair is not something possible and natural. I think that this video has given many women that reacts to this a reason to talk about their reaction, and just blowing it off as "crappy white people that has all these privileges in society should just be quite" that I see throughout this comment section is just going to make the situation worse. People can get offended, but that doesn't mean their offense is not ridiculous and an over-reaction. No one is saying white people can't have natural hair. Natural hair is not an offensive term and is basically chemically untreated hair that grows out of someones scalp. However, black women use the term natural hair because there is a separate history and culture behind it - to put it simply: black women have felt pressure to chemically treat their natural hair in order to conform to mainstream white societal standards for straight hair. So, wearing naturally curlier than the white norm hair is seen as against expectations because very curly white hair doesn't compare to the level of average curly black hair.

    • @Spiqen
      @Spiqen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So let me get this straight, no pun intended. If we go by that logic in other situations would that mean that it is ridiculous for a man to get offended that men can not get treatment in domestic abuse centers because historically mostly women has been domestically abused? Ridicule of a whole group of people because of their emotional response is not a great way to deal with a situation like this. It is like the response that bisexual people get from gay people that is "just pick, are you gay or straight" you are not solving anything, more likely are you riling people up by calling it ridiculous or over-reactive. It just sounds like you are picking a fight like this.

    To all the pressed white people saying their hair is also natural, no one said it's not. Natural hair is a terminology in black culture that refers to hair that does not have any added straightening chemicals. It's a term that has recently been popularised by the natural hair movement. Pls educate yourself before you start complaining, thank you.

    I consider natural hair to be a very broad term, because my hair is curly and I'm white (I don't use chemicals, nor have I straighten in quite awhile) but I do realize white people hair is different from black people hair. White people hair is not as thick and dense, while POC have much thick hair because it was an evolutionary trait. Their hair is much different then ours and they need different products. They have POC testing it because of their hair is quite different. Most products are geared to white people, and they just wanted to see if it'll work. I also want to say that buzzfeed already made a video where white women test dry shampoo. Stop complaining and watch that one.

    For those who don't know, the term "natural hair" refers to women of color who don't chemically straighten their hair by using relaxers, which changes the texture of their hair from kinky or coarse to a straight texture. So when you see the term natural hair it almost always is going to refer women of color.

    Try to remember that not everyone who was confused by the term 'natural hair' is just some uneducated, ignorant, American white girl. A lot of people are from different countries, non-native speakers, and don't know the common terms used here, and also would have no reason to know it was something necessary to google. It just sounded like regular English to them - not a "term".

      Kaalyn - OPG thanks for that ! I am french and when i started watching american videos, i though natural hair meant all kind of hair without any chimical (no perm - curly or straight- , no colour). By the way, i still think my pow makes more sense bc no maters what your hair look like if you only use naturals products that don't arm the environment or your hair then your hair are naturel (as in the first sense of the word)

Matter of fact Deva curl says kinky, curly and straight hair on the bottle so if you make a product for all hair types why does it only work for one or two categories. Please go elsewhere

    Why in the world would you give them white dry shampoo. For brunettes it's just easier to use the brown one! I DO like the fact that that last one meant specifically for curly hair was transparent, though! I'm glad that at least one company figured out that they needed to make a different formula for curly hair :)

    I think it really depends on what type of natural hair you have. The first two ladies had much courser dryer hair so dry shampoos weren't good for them, the last woman had a bit more a relaxed curl with some natural oil to her hair so it worked. Makes sense

    Well, I've never used dry shampoo before, but I really want to try it! If I don't wash my hair for a day it becomes crazily greasy and stinky. And that's just if I don't wash my hair for one day! As days pass the odor and greasiness just gets heavier. I feel like dry shampoo would help with that! Out of the three dry shampoos that were presented, I'd probably choose Batiste because she said it had a nice smell, or DevaCurl because there was no grey spots after she sprayed her hair. 😄

      I have red-violet hair. If i wash it every 2 to 3 days, it will fade fast, like in a month it's orangey. With dry shampoo i can inly wash it once a week, i get less oily over time, it looks the same as washed hair and smells the same. My colour lasts about 2 months and looks great and not really washed out. Note that i live in a rainy country; i wouldn't do this if i lived in a humid, warm climate, since you sweat a lot more there

  • @misskatlee
    @misskatlee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dry shampoo is for people whos hair is oily and nasty everyday which is mostly the straight and very loose curl texture which is whatever skin color you picture with that hair type. The oil travels down the hair shaft from the scalp faster so they wash their hair more often. People with kinky hair don't need to wash their hair as often because oil moves slower down our hair shaft our hair tends to be more dry. Which is why products aimed for kinky black hair is mostly moisturizers and natural oils and herbs that you can pronounce. I don't know what kind of stuff those other products have that I can't pronounce.

    White women complaining about how their straight hair is natural too are so ignorant. In the black community, natural hair is a term meaning there's no chemicals in your hair. You don't see a white women walking around saying her hair is natural. First of all, we can tell and second of all you don't need to get perms and such.

    I love this video. I may be caucasian (Celtic as Celtic can be for a Canadian) an just want to say...not offended. It's stupid to be offended by this video. This video is awesome. And I have curly hair that I don't use products in. It's fine hair. But curly. And I have always been interested in how the dry shampoo thing works for curly hair. I don't straighten mine or use any chemicals. And I do find the world is very different for curly haired women. I had to learn to cut my own hair because it's staggering the amount of hairdressers who do not understand how to cut curly hair. So I truly appreciate this video. We need more videos for women and men and others that have curly hair regardless of race because it is just true that in North America at least most products and styles are designed for people with straight to wavy hair. It's nice that people are posting videos like this to help the rest of us out.
