    Isn't there a problem with the alternative clue tokens since the original's back side shows their locations?

    I'm really surprised two things were not mentioned: 1. Dice - with special symbols on 5 and 6 2. Miniatures instead of standees.

    The only problem with replacing the clue tokens in Eldritch Horror specifically is that they have a second purpose with location numbers on the reverse side(used for placing random clues and determining other random locations. Pimping the clue tokens makes sense in AH and AH:The Card Game but not for Eldritch.

    • @GameNightPicks
      @GameNightPicks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, I would agree. I think I got the various Cthulhu games mixed up, and didn't realize this until the next time I sat down to play Eldritch Horror again after the video was done. Hopefully, the tip can be carried over to AH and the AH Card Game. As for Eldritch Horror, I apologize for the confusion and need for extra cross-referencing the tip would require.

    I'd probably mix the clue tokens, some newspapers, some footprints and some magnifying glasses

    For storage, I use the LCG standard size insert from The Broken Token to store all the cards in one box and then keep all the board and bits in another box

    @ 6:42 Wait up Chaz, that's an "F" actually as those clue tokens are missing the most important element of an Eldritch Horror clue token, namely, it's location on the board. How are you supposed to know where the clue generated? The best upgrade for Eldritch Horror that I've seen is actually an insert. Well, okay, *several* inserts. I use them and E.H. still takes up 3 of 4 of the big boxes. That's with every expansion though, including the recent one. The best upgrade I have yet to see would be a carrying case that included everything you needed for a *single* randomized game of E.H. One of the great things about E.H. and it's expansions is not just the variety but the fact that you don't use *all* of the components in every game. Each A.O. has it's *own* deck so for one game that's 18 decks you don't need to cart about, you only ever use *one* expansion board, if that, and much of the investigator's components can likewise be left behind as well as most of your Mythos cards and master monsters. You should never have all of the components present when playing the actual game, that'll just scare folk for all the wrong reasons. :3

      Yeah, that's a good call about the Clue tokens, Mike. The plastic and acrylic Clue tokens would definitely be a case where the upgrade, while neato, would add cross-referencing and some fiddliness. And that's not optimal.
      If I'd known about the "token capsules" that Stephan mentioned while working on the video, I definitely would have included them as a recommended alternative for protecting the cardboard Clue tokens. Here's a copy of the link that Stephan shared: boardgamegeek.com/image/3580342/eldritch-horror

      Y'know it's weird but even having watched this: th-cam.com/video/Z3reIVPh5bo/w-d-xo.html I still hadn't thought about using those for clue tokens. It just makes so much sense and makes the whole "chaos" bag/monster/clue cup idea seem so much more like a variable sided die to me now. I'm now on the hunt for something similar to protect the monster tokens and make them easier to draw too. I'm going to start with stamp collectors. After all, this gem came from coin collectors and an Arkham Horror LCG fan who is maybe a bit *too* into his protection. I've heard the only reason he prefers to use painted minis for A.H. is because they don't actually make screw downs that small.

    I believe that I have a mutant ability to make any line I am at the end of to become the slowest one in the store. It can look short but once I am committed, the the person up front either brings out coupons or there is a register malfunction that requires the supervisor that is on the other side of the store

  • @RGcrasyRG

    Dials > tokens.
    I am sorry, maybe a pile of brains and hearts is more authentic, but counting, taking some from a pile and getting them back is a nightmare. Also it's easier to storage!
    Maybe not a component upgrade per say, but a quality of life upgrade.

  • @Bodyknock
    @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't have a problem with the heart and brain tokens in the game but I did add small light green stones to replace the clue tokens and currently use poker chips for the gates (since I play with a house rules that gates can appear on any space and be any color - we draw a clue token to see where the gate appears and draw a gate token to determine the color of the gate. It adds a lot of variety to potential gate positions and color combinations.) My friend also 3d printed his own gate holders similar to some of the ones in the video (although not painted, some of the ones in the video are really impressive looking!).

    @4:33 Oh, look, exactly the component upgrades I use when playing the Arkham Horror card game. Hearts and brain for health and sanity, spyglasses for clues, crates for resources, skulls for doom.
    Not convinced the Gothic metal wine cup would be large enough to work as a monster cup, I think when we were playing Arkham Horror regularly we wound up using a small, clean, waste paper basket as often as not, because most mugs ad that were too small to work, and we didn't have a bag large enough. Seems perfect for drinking red wine from over horror games, generally, though.

    Gloomhaven have a health and exp system which are red and blue respectively, something like that would’ve been perfect

    The 57.5 x 89mm card sleeves recommended are oversized for the large cards, you can see significant edge overhang in the image at 2:34. I used 56 x 87mm (Mayday Standard USA Purple pack) on mine and they are a better fit.

    The best upgrade by far is 35mm coin sleeves to protect the monster tokens. After that, as Mike Jones already said, comes a good insert. I use the artist case insert from Firefly Workshop. I also use a dice bag from Third Die as my monster cup. As Mike Jones also said, those clue token upgrades won't work with Eldritch Horror, only Arkham Horror. If you are going to upgrade the Arkham Horror clue tokens then I recommend the glass-bead clue tokens available on Etsy. They are clear glass beads, flat on the bottom with an image of a traditional clue token on the bottom.

    6:20 : another option to make the clues more durable is 20mm coin capsules, as demonstrated here:
    boardgamegeek.com/image/3580342/eldritch-horror
    those add heft and make the tokens immune to almost all Eldritch Horrors. They also sound more satisfying when mixing the clue tokens.

    • @mikejonesnoreally
      @mikejonesnoreally 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are *great!* Even better when used with the tokens for the Arkham Horror LCG "chaos" tokens! :)

    • @StephanBeal
      @StephanBeal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For Arkham LCG you need 26mm capsules:

      Thanks for sharing the info about those token capsules, Stephan! I really like the idea of those, and I'm going to check them out, and consider including them in future component videos. Thanks again for pointing them out! :D

      Yes! This is what I did and it works great! You can find deals to get the capsules on ebay for decent prices, too. I prefer the 26mm capsules.

    So, I have the base game showing up in a couple days. While I'm obviously waiting to make sure I enjoy that before expanding it - I'm still researching ahead of time to see what expansions to keep an eye on.
    So, at this point in the product's lifespan: what expansions would you recommend above the others?

    • @AfroJeffrey
      @AfroJeffrey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get the Forsaken Lore Expansion, it enhances the base game so much. Also, as someone who owns all of the expansions, you need a bigger box. Plus, get trays for your components, and add more dice, since if you are like my playgroup who believes dices has a meter for good rolls and if someone rolls so godly the dices success meters is used up and won't use those dice anymore, then you need more.
      You know those thin ziplock bags that cheap and clear 100pcs sleeves come in, those are god send I saved a lot of those, and used them to group up cards. For example, All of an ancient ones related cards will be in one ziplock, then the enncounter cards will be separated and stuffed in one as a group.
      Get small containers for each tokens esp the Magnifying Glass, so you can just place everything in, shake it and draw one. Though, I also suggest getting a daily medicine container with enough space. The small cards are a hassle to deal with in prep. So I just deal with those when doing prep and cleaning. That's about it I guess.

    Hi. You forgot about a card holder component to eldritch horror. Because of the amount of cards in this game, there are a lot of discard piles and organizations of cards. I 3D printed a card holder.

      I'd love to put together a video that highlights components made by viewers. You're welcome to contact me through the contact form on the PoDP website at pairofdiceparadise.com/contact or components@pairofdiceparadise.com, and send me more info and pics. I don't know if/when I'll have collected enough to do an entire video, but I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)

    love the eldritch horror game. but the challenge stats are just to chaotic to have any strategy that makes sense. players should get an idea on what to expect. Item roamers and fighters know what to take care of. but for all kinds of challenges its a disaster

    If you want unholy amount of cards to sleeve, look at Dominion and sleeving BOTH sets of Trains and its expansion (~500 pet set, though you don't have to sleeve both sets of the basic, non randomized cards (3 sets of trains, lay rails, Station Build, and Waste), but even the new expansion comes with over 300 cards!). You can use the acrylic toploaders for games with a card that stays out on the field unrandomized, like the Goblin, Goldfish, and G0B-L1N from the Clank games and expansion, or the Major Improvements from Agricola. Though, thanks to travel, not really a fan of multibox storage solutions, which has been proven to be trying for keeping all of my T2R stuff, Elder Sign, and Trains Stuff together (Did send you a lot of @s about Trains on Twitter though)

    1:56 : FWIW, i recommend avoiding US-specific jokes, as this is an international audience and "DMV" doesn't mean anything outside the US.

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stephan Beal Personally despite being outside the US, I have seen enough American Film, TV and even Cartoons to know what the DMV is and understand the jokes. 😁

    • @StephanBeal
      @StephanBeal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As do i (i grew up in the States), but culture-specific jokes always alienate some porting of an audience. Just sayin'.

    • @Bodyknock
      @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Stephan Beal Or he can tell the jokes he thinks are funny and go with that since it sounds more heartfelt, that's probably better advice than trying to tiptoe around people who might feel slighted because he used a term that is common in the US and Canada. (I mean heck, Zootopia is one of the best Disney films of all time and it has an extended DMV scene that is a highlight of the movie!)

    • @StephanBeal
      @StephanBeal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Rosengard it's not about me feeling slighted (note the part where i grew up in the States). It's about making these videos accessible to (=understandable/enjoyable) a wider audience. It's called "constructive criticism", not "feeling slighted".

    • @Bodyknock
      @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stephan Beal I understand what you are saying and I am disagreeing with your opinion. The product he's producing is best served when he remains true to his own sense of humor rather than trying to match other people's potential sense of humor. Yes some people might not get the joke but they will get that he is being genuine and will appreciate that, and meanwhile many people will get the joke and appreciate why he thought it was funny and hopefully laugh along.
      Comedy isn't intended to cater to everybody in the world, it's trying to make a humorous statement about what the performer feels. Trying to rein yourself in just to meet an abstract goal of appealing to a wider audience is recipe for potentially ironically being less engaging and lowering your overall audience in the process.
