Glad people are ditching the race-brands for their trail vehicles and daily drivers. Dobinsons and OME BP51s are probably the two best options out there for overlanding and trail rigs, tons of adjustability gives the best ride quality no matter how your rig is loaded, or if its just daily commuting on pavement.
@@DylanBogusz we've got a couple dobinson videos in the works, and it looks like we'll be getting their MRR on either our Ranger or Tacoma for a review
well of course you would say that since you are getting dobinsons into your store soon haha. kings are considered "racing" shocks because of the huge amount of custom orders they can make with the customer, something dobinsons isnt even close to yet. so regarding that, kings will still be a better fit for any overlanding or trail vehicle since kings can be made to match the vehicle EXACT purpose, weight, flex etc etc..but for 99% of people these fine details wont matter anyway. they are all great shocks in the end, just thought your comment was a little bit misleading as a store who sells the racing shocks.
Another great and key video Grant! As far as the rig is concerned, there is the "land" part of overlanding and and the "over" part of overlanding. And what gets you over the land are your tires and your suspension. You can't control the land that lies before you, but you can control the tires and suspension you have. It doesn't matter what's above the frame. Jeep, Taco, Suburban, VW bug, Tesla, or Cadillac Eldorado, just see any Mad Max movie. As long as it can supply torque and HP to all 4 wheels, nothing else matters. Not your frig, not your tent, not your fancy pull out drawer kitchen. Thanks Grant!
King shocks needs to be revalved to suit the use. They are really good but the sales support is not good. When I order kings with Viton seals. It is not installed with viton seals . If ur a race team they will take care of u for sure. But individual regular customer . Dobinson mrr is the go.
thats why you go thru a company like shock surplus, accutune, filthymotorsports.. king has bigger fish to fry and you should know that as a grown adult lol
that is interesting how the Dobinson's runs upside down compared to the Kings, but I think the Dobinson's orientation has the advantage of positioning the shock shaft higher, which protects the shock shaft from gravel damage and less mud and dust will get to it. If the shock shaft stays cleaner and has less damage, the shock's seals will last longer.
#1 reason for this orientation is that all the existing range of coils Dobinsons make could be used on them. She shaft is also extremely well protected too.
youre overlooking a huge design flaw. do you see where the reservoir connector is? at the bottom of the shock, wide open facing the front..ready to take on the exact damage youre talking about. one hit and youre shock is done on the trial. idk about you but id rather see damage over time on a shaft then have a shock spill all its oil instantly. the comments in this video is filled with ignorance.
I’ve been running a set of MRR on my GX460. So far only about 10,000 miles but I absolutely love them. I did have to adjust them quite a bit from the “recommend settings”. With that said it rides like a dream.
@@YotaSurfs keep in mind my rig is 7260lbs in full Overland mode. I run the front and rear rebound almost maxed out. LSC compression I mess with depending on driving. Daily I actually like it pretty stiff. Wheeling I like it soft. HSC I believe I’m at 7 in the front and 6 in the back.
Everyone wants King/race car parts until you have to maintain them like race car parts. Second time around I went sealed ball joint and shock wrapping too to protect the shaft. Everytime it rains I had to grease the UCA (Camburg) bushings, had to dry film the uniball monthly, rebuild every 2/3 years
i guess they didnt do their research. They think bigger price=better, meanwhile a shock half the price would have met their needs. running boots on the east coast can be a disaster, trapping dirt, salt, rocks etc inside the boot with no way out and you cant even see the damage until its late. youre right on some people dont have the time to maintain the expensive parts they purchased.
I was ready to pull the trigger for a set of kings or fox for my taco. Then I came across the dobinsons. The dobinsons were clearly the best choice for me and they were over $1000 cheaper over the other two brands. What did it for me is the fact that they dont need to be rebuilt as frequently. From all the research I did, as well as ask people who actually own these, seems like they are very satisfied and have nothing but good things to say about their dobbies. Now to be clear im not saying that the dobbies are superior compared to the other two brands. Its just that the other two brands are WAY overkill for my application.
I made it just under 4 years before my DS MRA sprung a leak at the rod... oil everywhere.. and I may have damage on the rod itself.. I did put on another set of front Dobinson MRA's today DobinsUSA really helped me source a set of A59-574's (these are the extended travel) vs the standard travel that was offered with my original set from Exitoffroad. I have a big trip next week and needed them ASAP.. they built them in one day set for 3" lift and replaced the lower bushing to work with my 2016 tacoma, and had them on my door step in 3 days from Florida to Maine. I recieved them Monday afternoon, and spent from 6pm after work until about 9pm installing one side before hitting a snag.. rounded off nut on the inner upper mount... I had to get a dremel tool and cuttoff wheel to grind it off in the morning.. got it all done, and back on the ground by noon, and its significantly taller on 285/70/17 MT baja boss AT 32.99" I was measuring 38.75" on PS, and 38" on drivers side with a full tank of fuel and my awning on DS. I was having some rubbing in turns on DS, but not anymore...
Man, sounds like quite the ordeal. But awesome of Dobinsons to get you taken care of. I do know know that new shock will need to settle, so maybe it’ll even up over time. Cheers!
I would suggest you put something over the bolt sticking out of the frame that the rear hose (I assume on both sides) is against. Vibration will for sure rub a hole in the hose over time. I have replaced many hoses on tractors and such for issues just like that. Otherwise, it looks great..
I see snow on the ground; How do the Dobinsons perform in freezing temperatures. Do they stiffen up a bit or do they perform the about the same as in moderate/warm temps? Ive heard Kings loose most to all of their plushness in the cold. How is the corrsosion? Their aluminum bodies stands up to it well?
So far so good. All shocks won’t perform great in extremely cold environments because they all use oil. Once it’s warm through some cycling, it does well. No corrosion on this since it’s not a raw body.
Nice rig buddy, definitely thinking or going this route on the Runner over Kings. One thing I will say is good luck with the SPCs. I literally just threw mine in the trash a few weeks ago. Thanks for the insight on this setup

Super interesting video….my first thought was why??? Price and wait time due play a factor. But a King rebuild will take you about 2 to 4 weeks. I had it done on my Tacoma after an accident. Talked to King directly and it cost 110$ a shock(took 2 weeks to get them back, but I don’t live that far from the factory). I can see why you got rid of the older ones and went for the adjustable res on the Dobsons(run newer adjustable Kings myself). I also run the same Camburg UCA and love them, no squeak yet in most drier desert conditions.
Thanks for the review Grant. I am contemplating a 4Runner or Wrangler and suspensions. I had not even thought about mud and the high angle ball joints. I will definitely keep SPCs in mind. The clay in the Ozarks gets in every crack and crevice.

I know the technology is there; I been thinking about retro fitting a "bag on coil" kit and adding the air ride sensors and from accu air the air struts from D2 and figuring out how to hack their controls with a arduino piggyback ed to their computer control. Sounds pretty difficult but I'm pretty positive I can imitate pretty close to that 20k desert runner/baja system. Couple heavy duty shock position sensors...couple accelerometers...couple months and about 5k I figure I can get it done 90% the other 10% would be coding, hacking accu air controller and programming and essentially real world testing for the codification and real time tuning which i have a guy for that loves that kind of sh!t...if I get her finished I will post up results maybe even make a vlog of the progress!! I have been in a cup truck before and active suspension is a mind blower to say the least!!
I had looked at kings, compared their build against fox. For the money, fox was the better built shock. While I am sure kings are very good shocks, I think clever marketing and attractive packaging on their part keeps them competitive against a better shock.
Says no off-road racer
both are excellent shocks made for different applications but you clearly have no idea what youre talking about when comparing them. shocks like king or fox dont make it to the top just because of marketing or shiny parts.
Lmao. SAS ftw
Seems like a sweet downgrade.

What settings did you end up going with in that configuration?
