- After the complete left-field decision over giving up the Chagos Islands by Starmer and the Labour Party, thought it would be interesting to find out what was the reasons behind the decision. We also discuss what is coming when Starmer is kicked out, and the new leader comes in, the 'snap-back' of decisions that is going to happen. Also, the sequence of events that leads to another General Election in approx 18 months / 2 years.

Diego Garcia is interesting, particularly in relation to flight Mh 370. The US won't want the Chagos Islands given away for several reasons and that is one of them.

@@GreatestGoodTarot I’ve no time for Labour in any of their ‘guises’. Leading up to the election he didn’t even speak about policies. Just repeated that word ‘change’ over and over. Yet idiots voted him in.
There have been articles about the poor treatment the people from the Chagos islands have received and their desire to go home and not be treated as second class citizens by the Mauritian government again as happened before

I have to be honest - and we are debating the timeline - yet the only people I have really had come through 'normally' is Starmer, and a gay chap, which I am assuming is Wes Streeting.

Nobody apart from US service personnel lives on the Chagos Islands. There are Chagons but the British government moved them about 50 years ago. And they have British citizenship too.

In the Chagos archipelago there is an important US military base called Diego Garcia. It has a very long runway and lots of secret squirrel installations. It is right in the middle of the Indian Ocean so a very useful location militarily. That useful that the native Chagons were moved off over an 8 year period from 1965 to 1973. Some went to Mauritius and some care here. The UN has never been happy with this and they say it is illegal. But rather like Palestinian Refugees there can't be many who remember living in their homeland or indeed would want to go back actually.
Now the Tories actually started the discussions with Mauritius about taking the islands over. It is rather like Malta being given the Isle of Wight. There is no historical claim. And I cannot find out the reasoning for it apart from there being Chagons living there.
Now what is interesting is Mauritius is pro-China. And I am not sure how the US is reacting to this happening given Diego Garcia. There has been talk of a 99 year lease and there is probably all sorts of terms and conditions. But at the end of the day China's friend has been given territory useful to the US militarily. How the UK managed this I do not know as the US has the power to say no to us. It may be because Washington is in chaos as the moment and nobody has their eye on the ball I don't know. I can't see how legally the US could stop Mauritius allowing China to put military assets into those islands similar to what the US has now.
Two other issues. Firstly the UK, US and Oz are all signed up to AUKUS. We are supposedly helping Oz build and operate nuclear submarines. And we are now recommitted to the region too. So if this is so why would put in jeopardy a major base in the middle of the ocean next to Oz? Secondly this is a slap in the face to India. They are the regional power in the Indian Ocean. And now their competitor China has been given the possibility of basing rights in their middle of their ocean. It would completed a chain of bases for China from Djibouti in the Horn of Africa over to Burma.
Lastly the islands may be small but they cover a territory the size of Texas. And they have an EEZ of well over 120,000 square nautical miles. All this will probably end up being exploited by China. In the past the UK has talked about turning the Chagos into a huge marine nature reserve. These reserves have a huge positive impact on the surrounding seas.

After the fact 😂 And we all know, as Labour MPs are more scared of the whips than the people they represent, it will be pushed though like Winter Fuel etc. I think it's time to trigger by-elections, personally.
