    The song wouldn't even be THAT bad if Shawn just removed himself from the equation.
    Like, instead of saying, "He treats you badly, so be with me," say, "he treats you badly, so just leave him."
    Instead of a "Nice Guy" song, we'd have an... umm... "Get yourself out of your toxic relationship," song.

He wrote this song based on a story where he is in love with this girl but she is in a relationship, an abusive one which is hard to get out of and in a way Shawn is telling her that he loves her and can treat her better than him.

    As a former "nice guys", I can say this with all authority:
    Guys, you have no idea how actually liberating it is to treat your female friends like people and not like potential sex partners. Trying to find a relationship is stressful, and trying to go after someone who's not into you romantically is only going to hurt you both.
    Respect costs nothing. "Nice guy" entitlement can cost you everything.

      Stitches and one of his other hits Mercy are the exact same song.
      I had to listen to both VERY often at my job.
      They’re both whiny minor key songs about rough relationships. They both follow the basic Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus song structure. The bridges are the exact same: 4 lines about how he’s gonna be torn apart!!! Except when he repeats them, he goes an octave higher. He completely lacks creativity as a songwriter and artist only has one song.

    "You belong with me." Mentions specific reason why she would be a better girlfriend like sharing a sense of humour, taste in music and actually being friends. She mentions that he hasn't seen his smile much since the girlfriend came along. So there is a reason why she thinks that she would be a better girlfriend. So yeah it's miles ahead of "Treat You Better".

    • @TuesdaysArt
      @TuesdaysArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      Honestly...yeah. "You Belong With Me" might be cheesy and out of date, but at least Taylor seems to be more concerned about the guy's needs. Menendez acts like he's a nice guy, but those nice things are in terms of what would make HIM happy.

They would care more about helping them become more confident, helping them with their problems, and helping them with life in general. But, nope. I'm surprised Todd didn't mention Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" when talking about female versions of this type of song. I know "Girlfriend" paints its protagonist as the pettiest, most vindictive, most immature of punks, but at least the song is upbeat and playful, and showcases enough self-awareness to know that it's nothing more than a stupid, petty party anthem about a vindictive brat.
    Side-note: Has anyone ever noticed how similar Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift's careers are? They both started as promising singer-songwriters in genres that were probably way too out of their depth, thereby making them look like posers in said genres. Built a strong teen girl fan-base as the antithesis of other contemporary pop stars by writing lyrics that better relate to their core base. Then when they reached adulthood, they had no idea how to age artistically, made a drastic change in their sound and image, and now arguably have become the very things they spoke out against as teenagers.
    I'm digressing. This video is about Shawn Mendes, but I don't care enough about him to warrant even mentioning his name more than once.

    Another way Taylor's song works better than this one is the fact that she actually lists some specific reasons the girl isn't right for him and why she is a better fit. Like I'm not a fan of the petty, smugly superior "she wears high heels and I wear sneakers" nonsense but in the verses she does go little beyond that and explains some specifics like how the girl is mean to him and how Taylor's character understands him better. Shawn gives absolutely no reason why this guy is supposedly not good for her other than "he's not me".

      still doesn't make her sound any less like an entitled menstrual stain of a person. I don't care if she knows this guy's, favorite number 2 pencil, most memorable bowel movements, or has known him since they were sperms wondering if the next boner meant creating a child or being blotted up on a tissue. She should just accept the fact that he doesn't love her and move on already.

    You know, for as cringy as You Belong With Me is lyrically (and oh God it is), it does have one thing that puts it leagues above Treat You Better.
    The music video. That's because unlike Treat You Better, You Belong With Me's video actually shows that the main character (band nerd Taylor) actually genuinely cares about this guy, showing concern and asking if he's alright before jumping to conclusions about how "I know you MUCH better than them, I'd treat you SO much better than they do" immediately.

      Sounds like the record label realized that the song's lyrics are kind of irksome and tried to correct course by making the abuse undertones more prominent in the video. There are LOTS of music videos that take a song a different route entirely, or have nothing to do with it, and this is no exception. That video is a weak cover for this "I know better than you, I'm a nice guy so ride my dick" song.

If the original lyrics reflected that, it might have turned out decent. But it doesn't. Bryan Smith I agree. The line is, in fact "wasted crying". Which makes mendes look like even MORE like a douchebag, because he's just mad that she's not with him, and with someone else, and is just thinking with his dick, NOT his brain or heart, and trying to be there for her emotionally, but just saying "hey, baby, what are you doing with this douche, and crying about it, when you COULD be with ME!" Although that's the whole song. I agree, if he REALLY cared about her, he'd be there for her when she needed him, NOT just there when It's most convenient, or only as an object. Having seen people be abused like this myself, and having female friends, I try and treat every single one of them like people, and not as objects, something we should do for all of our friends, male or female. Something Shawn Mendes needs to learn, because he's a very, VERY poor man's Nick Jonas.

    As for all the Mendes fanboys/fangirls who will say that this song is an empowerment anthem for girls being abused, I'm calling you out - point out the specific lyric(s) where Mendes says this girl is in any sort of specific trouble, immediate harm, or is being abused. Go ahead, I'll wait... though I do suppose I'd be waiting a really long time, as there isn't a single lyric where that happens. So instead of pushing your bullcrap belief that this is an anti-abuse song, how about checking out some REAL anti-abuse songs:
    - "Face Down" by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
    - "When the Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks
    - "Mansion" or "Therapy Session" by NF

And that "you should be with me" logic is just so much crap, I can smell it from inside my brain. No one is that freaking _nice_ and _good_ that they will never "lie" especially if it'll hurt someone's feelings.

    I hate whininess. I hate Treat You Better and I hate Belong With Me.
    Actually I abhor Treat You Better. At least Taylor gives legit reasons that she is better.
    "You're on the phone with your girlfriend She's upset She's going off about something that you said 'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do" "And you've got a smile that could light up this whole town I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down" "Oh, I remember you drivin' to my house in the middle of the night I'm the one who makes you laugh When you know you're about to cry And I know your favorite songs And you tell me about your dreams".
    She's established that she actually has quite a relationship with this dude, a very close and intimate relationship. The worst part of the song is the whiney 'you'd be better with me' (not just 'you belong with me', that would be fine if he's single. It's 'she's not good enough for you') and the whole mean girl cheerleader thing. And of course it’s internal monologue, she’s not actually telling this guy to his face, at the end of the video he figures it out for himself.
    Mendez is a whiney 'nice guy'. ‘He’s a jerk and you belong with me. You should be sleeping with me.’ At least Taylor was sweet and innocent. Mendez isn’t sweet or innocent. He’s not like ‘he treats you wrong but I’ll treat you better, I’ll listen to your feelings and tell you you’re not emotional. I’ll hold your hand through rough times because we’re friends first.’ No, it’s ‘I’m such a nice guy, why won’t you sleep with me?’ And I hate it so much.

The sentiment instantly betrays one’s cry of love And invalidates the claim of being a nice guy. I think a large part of the difference between a song like "You belong with me" or even something like "Girlfreind"(which is super aggressive "nice girl" syndrome) is that judging by the video and tone it seems like the girl Shawn Mendes is talking about might be emotionally or physically abused... and then he's like "you need help getting out of this relationship... how 'bout you get on my dick"

    • @8bitdiedie
      @8bitdiedie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      8bitdiedie I assume he wants to both have sex and have a relationship, but "get on my dick" has more punch than "have repeated dinners with you and get on my dick whenever you feel is the appropriate number of dinners and then in a couple of months/years we can move in together if you want and then we can have kids(probably by accident) and then we can grow old and move into a depressing old folks home together."

    As a several-time victim of "nice guys," I can concur that this god-forsaken lines up PERFECTLY with how these assholes act. It's especially jarring to me because it's really, REALLY hard for me to have any attraction to anyone who I'm not good friends with (with few exceptions), and when people who I think I've gotten to know suddenly switch gears from "yeah hehe we friends it's cool" to "I'm owed a relationship to you because I've been nice to you." There's a huge frickin reason why I've been single my whole life XD. But seriously, this whole idea is atrocious and deserves nothing but scorn from any and all genders. You are not owed a relationship, it's not a prize to be won. It's earned through MUTUAL RESPECT.

      even if that were truly the intention and not just a coverup for the annoying nice-guy qualities in the song, it sounds more like hes trying to take advantage of a girl in an abusive relationship. actually supporting an abuse victim should revolve around the victim and getting them out of/supporting them in their situation, not " *i* can treat you better", " *i* would be a perfect boyfriend", "you should go out with *me* ", "dump your abusive guy and choose *me* instead", " *i* am such a great guy"

    • @JennaLeigh
      @JennaLeigh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      That's an incredibly simplistic, basic, half assed cover up. The entire song is saying "leave him, I'm better". "You should be with ME." There is ZERO indication in the lyrics that this is about abuse. Nevermind that if a woman is being abused, trying to coax/persuade/force her to be with you is better....how? How about being there for her? Maybe stop presuming that she can't handle her self.
      There are so many holes in your argument that it's sad.

    Also, I'd say that one way "You Belong With Me" is better than "Treat You Better" is that Swift at least makes a case why they AREN'T right for each other. Like how his girlfriend doesn't get his humor and how she brings him down. That relationship has obvious problems!
    Mendez just describes this as a "wrong situation", which could be taken as abuse, but could also just be seen as him thinking it's wrong because he's not in on it. Without the video, there's no indicators that she was abused or that the relationship even has concrete troubles.He just focuses on what he'd do different or at least better. Not a good case.

    That he really fucking loves the key of C#.

    • @sinistrality7883
      @sinistrality7883 ปีที่แล้ว

      ain't C the key every pop musicians use since it's the only key with no Sharps and Flats? so if you wanna write a chord progression you don't have to worry about it being flat or sharp, it's just one whole note.

    • @HyenaFox
      @HyenaFox ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sinistrality7883 Actually no, though that's good thinking, it has a lot more to do with the instrument you play.
      A lot of guitarists generally write songs in keys that can take advantage of the common open chord shapes on guitar as they ring out the best, so those are the keys of A, G, E, and D major. Also C major, but C major has an F chord which is difficult to play for beginners on guitar. Shawn Mendes uses the key of C# in a ton of songs because it's C, but with a capo on the first fret, so all open shapes are still usable, but you get a different sound.
      C is the easiest key to conceptualize if you're learning sheet music or piano, because you don't have to deal with sharps and flats, but guitarists don't really have to care too much about that making things more difficult to play, as it kinda doesn't make things any more difficult.

      Why should we all respect each other? We live in a world of feminists where the most evil and oppressive thing you can do on the bus is sit comfortably.

      Sidney Meyers I agree, Respect has to be earned. Not every person deserves respect. Another evil oppressive that is scorned by feminists that men do is simply compliment a woman in public. PATRIARCHY STRIKES AGAIN! In a proper respectable feminist society men would simply never take a single passing glance at a female and stare at the ground, apologizing constantly. SUCH equality. YAY

    Also, the music video's narrative is all about an actually abusive relationship, which is meant to make the song seem more reasonable. Compared to, y'know, an actual abusive monster, Shawn Mendes is indeed a 'nicer guy'. But this concept is never once mentioned in the lyrics! We actually know nothing about ANY relationship here except that Mendes has convinced himself this random girl isn't in love with her partner, based on zero evidence other than "I can see it in your face". Which means that whoever directed the music video heard the song, was like "This is utter bullshit", and deliberately changed the narrative of the song in an attempt to make it slightly more palatable. And EVEN WITH THE CONTEXT OF AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP, Mendes is STILL an insufferable little shit. Truly impressive.

      I think it's kind of fucked up how instead of being concerned his friend out of an abusive relationship, he seems more interested in swooping in and taking her for himself. Like, dude get your priorities straight. It's also probably a bit douchey to even try to go after someone in such a vulnerable position like that. If he were actually a "nice guy" he would at least wait a while before trying to start something with a broken woman just coming out of an abusive relationship.

    One of the bigger gripes I have with this song that wasn't bought up in the review was it's overproduction. WGWAG songs, whatever your opinion of them, at least have the impression of intimacy due to their minimal instrumentation and the fact that an acoustic guitar is rather soft-sounding, and some songs, such as "Hey There Delilah", benefit a lot more from it than if they had any more advanced instrumentation. But with the over-polished style and the loud drums, it removes any sense of intimacy, and goes completely against the image Mendes is aiming for. It doesn't feel like a guy serenading you. It feels like a guy making an extremely grandiose statement while pouring his heart out, which goes completely against the message of something like "Stitches" or even this repugnant song.

    Still more pleasant to listen to than Donald Trump at the presidential debate...which is like saying that nails in one's ears are better than in one's eyes but I digress.
