  • Why do we go to Mass every Sunday? Is it because of what we "get out of it"? Is it the way it makes us feel? Is it out of love for God? Or something even deeper and more profound?
Today, Fr. Mike explains the Church's teaching on Sunday Mass obligation, and why this is the way that God has asked us to worship him.
What does God want this Advent? Simple. He wants you. He wants a personal encounter with you. This year, journey through Advent with "Rejoice! Hey 3 days ago we met someone whose name was Mohamed and he told me that after Catholic young preachers talked to him about Jesus he felt the holy spirit the love of God in his life and he changed his name to Michael and I though of father Mike for a second. Praise God for this conversion 🙌🏼

How do you differentiate the feeling from calm as a result of meditation? or the feeling felt after hearing a beautiful song? Is it their calm, deep, authoritative voice? Can you try to replicate that setting with the exception of God, will you feel the same? or is it in the word itself God? when I said God is it the same intense feeling or did the setting at that time helped it? I wonder where that feeling is coming from. 🤔🙂

From what I know people can get into trance with just repititive chanting or beating of the drum without reference to a specific god but just a 'spiritual realm' Fascinating! 😃
Would you believe other religions too on the basis of that feeling? I'm morbidly curious. 🤔🙂

@@terminusadquem6981 Good questions. I am also curious and it is too bad you didn't get a response. It seems a lot of believers feel and hear things and then attribute it to god telling them something by default. I would like to know how they know that's what it is and where it's really coming from.

While regular attendance at church is considered essential for many Christians, it is important to remember that the church is not just a physical building or a Sunday morning service.
The church is made up of people who share a common faith and who support and encourage one another in their spiritual journeys.
In this sense, worship can happen anywhere and anytime, and it is not limited to a specific time or place.
In the New Testament, Jesus himself speaks about the importance of gathering together as a community of believers, saying, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20).
In fact, the Bible teaches that worship is not confined to a specific place or time, but is a matter of the heart.
In John 4:23-24, Jesus said, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." This verse emphasizes that true worship is not about external rituals or practices but about the condition of the heart and the relationship with God.
Furthermore, the Apostle Paul teaches that believers are temples of the Holy Spirit and that God's Spirit lives in them (1 Corinthians 6:19). This means that believers can worship God wherever they are and that they do not need to be in a specific physical location to experience God's presence.
That being said, attending church can be an important part of building and strengthening a community and can be beneficial for believers in many ways, such as connecting with other Christians, learning from teachers and pastors, and engaging in fellowship.
Hebrews 10:25 encourages believers not to give up meeting together, but to encourage one another in faith.
Jesus himself valued community and fellowship.
He gathered a group of disciples around him, and he encouraged them to love one another and support one another in faith. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Jesus often gathered with people outside of formal religious settings, such as synagogues or temples. He preached to crowds in public spaces, such as hillsides and marketplaces, and often engaged with people from all walks of life.
However, it is also worth noting that Jesus did attend religious services and observed Jewish customs, such as attending the synagogue on the Sabbath (Luke 4:16). Jesus' ministry was not limited to one particular setting, but rather he engaged with people in a variety of contexts, both inside and outside of religious institutions.
Ultimately, the important thing is not the physical setting in which worship or ministry takes place, but rather the heart and intention behind it. Whether gathered inside a church building or outside in a public space, the goal should be to connect with God and engage with others in a meaningful and authentic way.
Furthermore, the Bible emphasizes the importance of personal relationships with God and pursuing spiritual growth. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, it says, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." This verse emphasizes that the Bible is a valuable resource for spiritual growth and development and that believers can learn and grow in their faith by studying and reflecting on its teachings.
Attending church can be beneficial for believers, it is not a requirement for salvation or spiritual growth.
Christians can pursue spiritual growth and relationship with God in a variety of ways, both inside and outside of a church building.
    🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
If you find that you are not gaining anything from your current church experience, or are having trouble understanding the message delivered by the priests, it may be helpful to consider exploring other churches or denominations. By doing so, you may be able to find a spiritual community that resonates better with your beliefs, and experiences, and that can enhance your spiritual growth and development.
Each church has its unique style of worship, teaching, and community, and finding a church that resonates with an individual's beliefs and experiences will enhance the spiritual journey. Some churches may have a pastor who delivers sermons in a different way or use different worship styles, which can be more engaging for some individuals.
However, it is important to approach this exploration with an open mind and heart, recognizing that no church or pastor is perfect. Additionally, it is crucial to do proper research and discernment when exploring new churches, considering factors such as doctrine, community, and mission.
Ultimately, each individual's spiritual journey is unique, and finding the right church or spiritual community can be a significant factor in their spiritual growth and development.

I’m a Protestant considering becoming a Catholic, don’t even know where to begin. Where do I start? Can I attend Catholic mass as a Protestant? Can I go to confession? I recently had a dream where Mary appeared and told me to pray the rosary and I am, and I’m already seeing massive peace in my heart. What next?

      1. Yes attend mass
      2. Attend RCIA at a local parish
      3. Receive communion and go to confession only after you are a practicing Catholic who completed RCIA and got confirmed in the church.
      4. Don’t feel left out about not receiving communion. Even as a confirmed catholic, there’s times where we can’t/don’t receive because we haven’t confessed our sins (especially our mortal sins) yet in confession.
      5. I’m delighted to hear of the start of your conversion. Thanks be to God.

It's helped me a lot and humbled me. There's so many things I was doing that were keeping me from being in grace. We are all sinner's. Always humble yourself and return too confession. It's a wonderful gift.

It really hit me when Father said it matters to other people if we go. One time, when I was camping, I went to Mass at a strange church. I looked around and wondered who would care if I hadn't gone and would anyone miss me if my seat were empty. They didn't know me. Suddenly, I had a revelation - not really a voice, but I knew it was from God - telling me, kind of showing me, how different it would be if I were not there. I realized my presence truly mattered. Very strange feeling, but profound and humbling.

As a disabled adult who struggles cuz I often look fine and also overestimate myself even though I should know better…
I struggle with missing mass and then beating myself up for it too.
I haven’t been able to go to mass in a couple months, and when is see the Sunday masses streamed and posted form Father Mike, I’d feel so embarrassed and guilt-ridden that I’d scroll away quickly.
This past Sunday I watched Father Mike’s mass (tho I watched it around 6PM and I’m central time sooo… I could’ve been better with timing)
I’m so glad I did! Last Sunday especially I needed to hear it. I cried from the beauty and timing.
And I pray I’ll be able to find my way back to at least the online masses and eventually I want to get back to in-person at my extended family’s parish (that I hope to become part of and eventually attend daily mass too)
I’ve been praying so much for help from God lately. I want to do better, I want to be better.

I am just getting better after about 7 years of a chronic illness. I had to stop going to Mass and began online Mass. I was considering asking for someone to bring me the Eucharist.
Then the Pandemic hit. My life did not change one iota. It was hard for me to believe that everyone was home like me. But there you have it.
Still have not returned because we only have Masses that you must sign up for ahead of time, and the group is now mixed with vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Because I am not completely well, I do not feel I should be among the unvaccinated in large groups at this point.
I don’t think you have anything to feel guilty about. Father is talking about the able bodied not attending.

@@pjsmith4369 If you would like to be physically present at Mass but are concerned about crowding, try attending a weekday Mass where there are fewer people and they are more spread out. Also, you are in church for a shorter time. I don’t mean that this would ‘substitute’ for your Sunday obligation, since if you are unable to go on Sunday your aren’t obliged to do so. Just that if you want to get back to attending Mass this might be a way. Whether you are vaccinated or not, do what you can to protect yourself such as masking, distancing, supplements, anti-viral meds, etc. You need to take care of your health. But come to Mass if you can find a way to do so safely. Fr Mark Goring’s daily Masses at 9:00am at St Mary’s church in Ottawa, Canada were my mainstay when our churches were closed and they are still broadcast live on TH-cam.

Yes, I owe God everything. As He said, “without Me you can do nothing.” . It’s one special hour for me to love Him, thank Him, remember Him. Now that I’m old, it’s harder and I live alone. Some days when I feel weak I’m afraid to go because I have to get back home and I might feel worse. (I also think I’m self indulged thus lazy). So sometimes I’m don’t go and it eats me up. I wish I knew if I’m deceiving myself to get out of some masses. I always love being there but fear for physical reasons keep me home some times. Any thoughts? I just don’t know. I work as a missionary youth minister, and we had planned to do a lesson on the Mass last night. Lo and behold, this video came out. The way Father explains the importance of the Mass and the reason for the Sunday obligation is so clear and loving, I couldn't think of a better way to explain it to my teens. I ended up using this video during part of the night, and many of them really liked it. One of them told one of my volunteers, "I never realized the Mass wasn't meant mainly for us." It was such a fruitful night. What providence!

If a child does something wrong without knowing it's wrong, how will the father judge compared to a child who does something wrong knowing full well that it's wrong? Justice would say that the second child, though committing the same offence, has the greater guilt and should be held to a stronger standard, right? Because they committed the offence even after having been taught

This is something I have trouble with. I have had problems with social anxiety, to one degree or another, my entire life. Going to Mass every Sunday, let alone on time every Sunday can be difficult. In the past I have forced myself to go despite my feeling anxious. I can understand the real grace I recieve, and the Glory I can give to God but I feel like it results in the opposite of what God really wants for me or for anyone because of the added anxiety which can remain with me for some time afterward. I think ultimately it comes down to not wanting to develop an association with my anxiety and my worship.

Rob, because of Father Mike, I went to Catholic Mass for the first time in almost 20 years. I'm a returning Catholic. That first mass, going by myself, I had a lot of anxiety as the "new guy," and wasn't sure if I could remember everything. I was nervous around large groups of people, especially ones I did not know. The Catholic Church I went to was almost 50 years old, well established, and one where everyone knows everybody. Having been raised Catholic, I still remembered a lot and got through Mass (didn't do Communion as I needed confession first). In the end, I felt at home. I felt warmth, relief, and thankfulness that I returned. I felt this is where I need to be every Sunday. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. I overcame the anxiety, and knowing I was sacrificing time for God, helped me overcome it much easier. It took a couple more Sundays for the anxiety to be at a low, more manageable level for me. It's not easy but it can be done. Every Sunday is an invitation. I guess my punchline would be: "If Jesus Christ invited me to Mass, would it matter if there was 1 person or 1 thousand?" Thank you for sharing your post. Anxieties are high among many these days. I hope my words, and others' here helps. Many blessings Rob, take care.

I’m no expert, but I’ve been told that for a sin to be mortal, it must be done with full knowledge and deliberate consent. If something prevents you from going to Mass, such as anxiety, then that can mean that you don’t fully consent to missing Mass. Not to say that you should just skip Mass or skip things because of your anxiety; no, the hope is that you can find help/counseling/spiritual guidance to overcome your anxiety! But in the meantime, know that God is merciful and He will help you through this. Praying for you 🙏

From what the Catechism says if you don't attend Mass on the Lord's Day as well as other holy days of obligations it violates the Commandment You Shall Keep the Lord's Day Holy. Which here in the United States there are five holy days of obligation which may or may not land upon a Sunday or if they land upon a Saturday or Monday would be observed on Sunday instead except for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary being that the Lord's Day during Advent supercedes other Solemnities. The five days are the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, the Solemnity of All Saints Day, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, and the Solemnity of the Nativity of Jesus (Christmas). Solemnities are major feast days most are celebrated on Sundays even been moved to Sundays like Corpus Christi, the Ascension of Jesus, the Epiphany of Jesus.
As for the Vigil Mass the evening before the actual Solemnity or Lord's Day if you attend this Mass it counts as fulfilling your obligation. People should still be aware that refraining from doing work unless it's something like caring for the elderly or sick that you are still obligated to rest and spend time with your family on Sundays and holy days obligation even if you attended the Vigil Mass the evening before.
There are excused absences such as if your sick, taking care of children, having to work because of living in extreme poverty, etc. to name a few.
Any Catholic who is a Catholic should own a Catechism of the Catholic Church. It's a book that contains centuries of knowledge pertaining to the doctrine of the Church in regards to the faith and moral teachings.

Jesus never said you have to consume bread every Sunday for him. It's only Catholics who take this literally. This is why The Protestants who did away with traditions made up by humans don't practice communion.
Also you don't have to pray specifically on Sunday during mass. You can pray at any time in any place. Don't let priests or pastors guilt you into thinking you need to come to mass or else you're sinning against God.

How much more do we offer up what is the best of us to God and return to that ultimate sacrifice again for solace? Some daily mass goers will tell you how it is the bread that sustains them during the day not simply once a week.

I'm really grateful you explained the underlying reasons why Catholics refer to Sunday Mass as an obligation.
As a Protestant who has grown to appreciate a lot of Catholicism, I can see a fuller meaning behind it now, rather than just a rule based requirement.
However, to consider it a mortal sin is simply not scriptural and seems very manipulative, unless it is plainly taught and I've missed it somehow?
No, we should not forsake the assembling of believers, but His Word never says that we are in danger of eternal damnation if we don't attend a worship service.

Most people couldn't read and we didn't have ready access to written words until the invention of the printing press until the 1500's. Things can be true even if they aren't written down. The majority of the population being literate is actually a very new development in human history. We still aren't at 100%.

I am disgusted with the news that St.Francis Church in Malacca has been hit by misappropriation of RM1.5 mil which was for the renovation and repair of the church. Most of church staff have been laid off so that the bews would not be expiosed and no police report was made. The Bishop of the diocese should take full responsible for this as he gives the go ahead or signs the cheques. The parish priest is defenitely involved. I am disgusted because they keep asking for donations from the congregation with all kinds of reason. The priest involved is Fr. Cyril. He is now not in Malaysia but transfered/ or moved to India. Bishops and priest today are pig headed and totalitarian because no one can question as to where the money went. These money are from church goers and they are not rich. I've also heard a priest say that if for some reason you have to work on Sundays, you can make up for it during Saturday evening Mass. Also, people who are disabled, elderly, or very ill, can still get the Eucharist through a church ministry that distributes it. Hoping these tips will help.

Book, chapter and verse FROM the Bible that states Christ attended Mass. Or that He commanded it!!
Book, chapter and verse that states Sunday is Holy Day declared by God!!!!!!
----Isaiah 58:13-14 Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on MY HOLY DAY,
and call the Sabbath a delight
    and the HOLY DAY of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
    or seeking your own pleasure,[b] or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
    and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
    READ THAT LAST LINE AGAIN!!!
Unless you want to insist God is a liar!!!
----Is that Bible wrong?? A lie???
REMEMBER, I DID NOT WRITE IT!!!!
Who is right??? The churches that teach Sunday as a holy day, or is GOD RIGHT????
    Jesus declared: John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. ... No one comes to the Father except through me.
----So, when a church teaches what contradicts what Jesus taught, which one is true??? A church?? Or Jesus? If you say the church is right, that implies Jesus ia a liar?? That makes ALL the 4 Gospels and ALL the NT ALL LIES!!! Throw it out!! When you insist Jesus is God, that implies God is a liar. There goes ALL of the OT!!!
If you insist Jesus IS right, that implies the church lied!!! Which is it??? God? Or mere men?

Well said Father! I think it's important to add that if someone rarely or never attends Mass, it's incredibly easy for them to forget about the faith. Going to Mass each Sunday serves as a constant reminder to keep God in our lives. So if you skip Mass one week, that could lead you to skipping multiple weeks, months, or even years. Then eventually you may not even give God a second thought. This is incredibly dangerous. So please, never miss Mass unless it is for a reason beyond your control (like illness or a broken down car).

Hi Fr. Mike - There is a piece to this video that I think needs being addressed. There are many of us who have serious health issues or work/live in serious risk areas where it’s not really still 100% safe to go to mass even with COVID vaccinations and so on. While many of us acknowledge that nothing will replace the Eucharist and worship in person, what do you have to say for those who that is their number one reason that they are staying away/remaining watching virtually? Unfortunately it does not help that many parishioners still are also uncharitable as well when it comes to being mindful about COVID as well. Many of us have been to masses where only days later to get a call from the parish saying someone tested positive who was at mass and now we have to quarantine. So that fear for many is very valid and real. TL;DR how can we address those concerns and be gentle with those parishioners who are staying intentionally away from mass due to the Pandemic because they can’t trust their own brothers and sisters to keep each other safe? Thanks Father Mike!

    • @seewhatlove
      @seewhatlove 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I hear you, and your concerns are mostly founded. A few things I hope will help: 1) The vaccine, and now boosters for those with high-risk conditions, are available and scientifically shown to be effective. Also masking. Assuming you are doing these things, trust the science, God's design, to keep you safe, not other people. 2) It can be hard to return after a long time away. My anxiety definitely slowed my family's return. Discussing your feelings and questions with the local pastor or parish staff might help; they want you there. And therapy. I needed it to heal my injured brain. No shame. 3) Reflect on how important this is not just to God but to YOU. Are you making in-person Dr visits or shopping? Could you equate the two in terms of safety? Could you accept additional risk for His sake? 4) Finally modify if needed. Find another parish with higher ceilings or fewer attending per service or simply following better practices. They exist. If all else fails, streaming Mass does fulfill your obligation if truly homebound. Many parishes offer to deliver Eucharist to these folk as well. Grace and peace!

honest question. I grew up as catholic but never really 'got it'. From my understanding you MUST go to mass on Sunday or its a mortal sin. It doesnt matter if you go to daily mass every other day. Or if you go to a wedding at 2PM on a Saturday. If you do not go to mass starting at like... 7 PM on a Saturday through 11 : 59 on a Sunday you committed a mortal sin and need to go to confession or else you are damned.
Why does God need me to go to mass during this time period or else I have divorced myself from God? Does God value Sundays that much that I could go to mass EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK but if I don't go on Sunday than thats a mortal sin?

Fr. Mike: First I love you and your videos. A request: Please do a video about Catholics who despise other parishioners and stubbornly refuse to acknowledge their bretren. I have seen this for decades in many different churches. It is a problem, as I watch them walk up to Communion and receive the body and blood of Jesus. Are they blind??

That scripture in the book of Hebrews is commanding not to forsake the assembly of the believers, saying on Sunday and proclaiming it to be the mass is adding to the scriptures.
Also I must say, all who are worshipping any god and not God the Father only, such are worshipping devils and sacrificing unto devils and not to God.

Here’s my struggle-if my teenager refuses to go to Mass next Sunday, would it be just to torture him for five minutes as punishment?
    No.
So eternal damnation (mortal part of mortal sin) with never ending torture does not fit with my logic of justice.
If it would be too harsh for me to do, why would an All-Loving God be okay with it?

I watched this video because I haven’t been practicing Catholic for several years. This is a decent video, but my reoccurring thought is I didn’t ask to be born. Plus, life hasn’t been the best to me. I’m looking for a solid reason to go back to church.

After seeing and hearing how the church preached jesus's humble decent qualities and looking around at expensive marble , polished granite, expensive robes, gold chalices forty years ago I realised church was an unhealthy place to commune with God, I'm glad I never went again 🤙

Is it ok to attend on Saturday instead of Sunday?

Saturday evening is fine. It needs to be evening though. A Saturday Wedding Mass at 2 p.m. doesn't count for Sunday.

Father, this is an extreme assumption but if I had to do just one thing, what is more valuable? Going to mass daily, going to adoration daily, praying daily, fasting daily, performing charity? I know that if done sincerely and with the heart one thing takes us to the other one buy please respond what would be #1.

I dont go to Mass because it would make my parents angry if I did. My fathers priest was one of the ones named in the original Boston Globe report. Even though nothing happened to anyone in my family, my father wants me to have nothing to do with the Catholic church.

Going to Mass just to get the Eucharist because we're renewing our covenant when we do that . Because when we go to Mass I feel closer to God and I love listening to the priest Kevin Gates message what he has prepared for us . Because the priest has put his time in preparing God wants us to know . I will not dare stay home when I'm not sick what's the car won't work that's different that's a different. There might be a time where can I go because I was in the very bad accident 1997 my arthritis is very bad in my spinal area if I'm hurting very bad God understands so far everything is okay but I can't get inline protecting of the Eucharist so the priest brings it to me ungrateful that they do that I'm a senior citizen I'm age October I will be 68 and I'm worried that my license will be taken away stop very good I've taken to know which test. My wife told me if I can't get to confession she will order a Huber they will take me there and bring me back home. Put here in town we have a care car for the senior citizens if I have a doctor's appointment who are dentist appointment forever I need to go with within town it's two hours round trip. Reason I was saying all this I would have a way to church if my license is taken away .

I'm not comfortable with the claim that we're not there to get anything out of Mass. We're there to get rightly ordered and set our priority right. When we get this, we're worshipping God intrinsically.

Whether you or not you believe his message, Father Mike is a terrible communicator. He needs to learn how to slow down, speak clearly, and lose the up-and-down inflection.

There are people that go to Church every time, and yet, they are not good people.
Some of us have to work on weekends, a live streamed mass suffices.
Some priest are all the time in Church, and commit atrocious acts and don’t even get punish by law. Go figure.

Missing “mass” is a mortal sin punishable by an eternity in hellfire,
Sunday is the day of the sun god that is why th Catholic Church changed the sabbath
    From Saturday to Sunday.
The monstrance is a sunburst a homage to the son god.
Dec 25 is the birthday of the sun god,
Starting to get the picture yet?

Sin is sin. No matter what the sin is. The wages of sin is death. If anyone truly seeks forgiveness from Jesus our Lord and Savior, he/she should repent and believe. Become reborn in Jesus Name! To repent doesn't mean confession. It means to change one's mind, thinking or thought that is so powerful it changes that person's life. It is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ that we have salvation. If anyone has questions read God's Word! Ask for clarity and answers and He will give it to you! You can worship God anywhere just like Jesus tells the woman at the well. John 4:20-24. Going to church on Sundays is important because you can fellowship and praise God as one. We the people are the Body of Christ. The church is just a building. Plain and simple. The people who believe in Jesus and who are reborn again make up the Body of Christ. Praise Jesus and I hope anyone who reads these words seeks after Jesus with all of their heart, mind and soul. In Jesus Name. Amen.

@Ascension Presents Hey Father Mike, good video. I’m a young Catholic who goes to Sunday mass every week. But I’m curious, how do I answer a Protestant who’d say that I’m trying to “earn” my salvation because I believe that I “owe” it to God to go to Sunday mass every week, since salvation doesn’t come from our works?

    So there's that.
