Kathryn Hays is so great. Unbelievable she was never nominated for a Daytime Emmy! She certainly deserved one.

Yes she did.... When I was growing up I seated a lot of the women that got nominated were the ones that portrayed One of those women that always had something gone on you know some drama.Katherine Hayes brought class indignity to the role that she played as Kim.... I'm not saying that the other actors are bad but I'm just saying I miss Hayes played a classy lady instead of a trashy lady and some people just love that.

Yes, Kathryn Hays should have been nominated for a Daytime Emmy, several times. It was a travesty that this never happened!! I loved her character and her performance on ATWT for 38 years!

Back in 1991 I got last-minute, front row tickets to see "Henry IV" parts 1&2 at the Public Theatre in NYC. Larry Bryggman played King Henry IV and he was AMAZING!

I absolutely love everything about As the World Turns from this era. The sets were beautiful, great storylines, wonderful characters and the main thing was there were no Snyder's in sight.

I always thought they should have brought Grant back for Lisa at some point. I believe he was the love of her life. They never should have divorced.

Those gold and black lamps in Kim's house (or was it Lisa's), my mother had a set just like that.

Kathryn Hays and Larry Bryggman are one of my all-time favorite ATWT ex-married couples--their disagreements regarding Andrew's welfare are very realistic. I enjoyed the Wade Bookstore scene involving Eileen Fulton and Helen Wagner as well. Having so many veterans made ATWT one of the best shows on the air, especially when the vets were used well.

I was just a kid when this all aired....maybe around 11 years old, and this is the first era of ATWT that I remember. I remember being home from school, sick, and catching the odd show when my mom would have it on. I also recall a time when Lisa was in a car and she couldn't slow down because someone cut her brake line, then I remember her being attacked by a hooded figure in the Wade Bookstore (and all the suspicion being on Jay). Is there any of that storyline here?

ATWT owes so much of its success to Eileen Fulton, Kathryn Hays, and Helen Wagner, who always bring intelligence, beauty, and class to every scene they perform in from the live TV days to the one hour videotaped episodes. Other favorites who deserve to be acknowledged (and who performed when the show was still live) are Patricia Bruder, Marie Masters, Rita MacLaughlin Walter, and Barbara Rodell.

Larry Bryggman looks so young & dapper here. John & Kim always had contentious relationship. They were more frenimies than friends. Granted they co-parented Andy but Kim always kept an eye on John.

The Wade Bookshop was never owned by Lisa. She only ran it for Penny - whose late husband Neil Wade owned the bookshop. It's amazing how long they kept that store and set around, as Neil died in the early/mid 60's.

I can see why they may have felt it was a little cheap (the set) but some of these clips have so much character interaction and it has a nice homey feel.

Interesting to hear John say that Andy (then a baby, I think) missed Emmie, who had been taken back by Susan. In later years, I don't think the adult Emily and Andy ever had any connection--which could make sense.

This was great. Love seeing more of the Wade bookstore, and more of Nancy! Not fond of her hair at this time. Lisa being so torn makes this a more interesting storyline. Eileen is great here.
John and Kim have such a tense, awkward relationship at this time. He clearly annoys her and he has no subtlety. I'm impressed they became closer in later years.

Was John Dixon supposed to be a bad guy for questioning the way Kim's actions would effect Andy?

    • @Phoenix-zy1cx
      @Phoenix-zy1cx ปีที่แล้ว +1

In a way, yes. John Dixon had been an abusive, manipulative husband to Kim from pressuring her into marrying him, assaulting her during the marriage, and later gaslighting her when she had amnesia into believing they were happily married so he could get her to comply with his demands for intimacy, which resulted in Andy being conceived. John Dixon is, famously, a villain.
At this moment in the story, Kim is a grieving widow, dealing with the trauma of her beloved husband's sudden death, and John is circling Kim like a vulture, using Andy as a pretense to get near Kim. He is undercutting Kim's self-confidence by making her question every choice she is making, which is a manipulation tactic. And he's doing it by using their child as the pawn.
John wasn't over Kim, and it's clear from how they both play their scenes that John did love Kim in his own selfish, twisted way. But his interest in Andy's welfare isn't genuine. He's using Andy as an excuse to try and control Kim's life now that she has no husband to protect her from him.
In another episode in this time period Kim calls him out on his behavior, and they have a poignant moment where he seems to realize that if only he could be a better person, maybe things could be different. But they both admit that there is no way for him to undo what he did in the past.
It's a nuanced portrayal of a toxic dynamic, and I love how much subtlety they both bring to their performances.
Such a long response to a question from 4 years ago, but I loved sharing my thoughts on it. :D

I enjoyed seeing the Wade Bookshop as well. I hate in when new writers come in and create new sets and destroying long familiar ones. They burned down the Wade Bookshop, as if that was supposed to make the show better. The interaction and weaving of characters during this time was sorely missed in the much later/Goutman years.
