yes fish sauce is fish sauce, but viet people do not serve straight fish sauce from the grocery store with their food. every one makes their fish sauce differently, some fishier or sweeter than others, but they never actually serve fish sauce from the bottle.

Fermentation and rotting is not the same thing. The fish sauce is fermented not rotten. Fun fact, worcestershire sauce is actually a fermented fish sauce as well.
A True Wisconsinite in his defense though straight fish sauce smells pretty rotten, but I love it anyway.
